My favourite scene in all cinema when 2 people fall in love and when language becomes wonderfully superfluous and indeed irrelevant as language tends to be. An utter joy
How sad you love this perfect film and do not know that it is POST-WWII. That is part of its charm. The innocence and hope in the air as a possible new world opens before them. Also note the rations of tea and especially SUGAR have been lifted. Sugar was heavily rationed during the war (WWII). God bless you anyway for recognizing this perfect film. For me it was like finding diamonds in a cardboard box.
+Thomas Edward-Anthony Looking on Wikipedia Noel Coward wrote the play in 1936 so in effect it was a pre war story. Laura is also narrating her story which happened in 1938. Although the film Brief Encounter was made in 1945 perhaps the Channel owner can be forgiven for saying it was before WW2 as in effect it was. Just an observation to a criticism of your comment.

I noticed that, as they were talking about the coal mine dust.
Absolutely. Brilliantly. Perfectly. Played. Acting does not get any better than this. Perfection.
Brief Encounter, Roman Holiday, and It Happened One Night are the most romantic of all romantic movies, or all times :)
Now I will have to see the movie.
Absolutely brilliant .Don't need bedroom scenes to make it romantic.
