    Saw Todd walking down the street once. I called his name and he looked completely surprised that I knew who he was. humble genius is the best kind of genius.

    I was fortunate to find his CD "With a Twist"
    where he sings his music with a bossa nova beat. One song is totally Martin Denney.
    Outstanding as usual. I listen to this all the time - very relaxing.

    Glad to seed this again. I went to two shows on this tour and it was the first time I saw John Ferenzik, Jesse Gress and Prairie Prince in the band. And always great to see Kasim. Who knew they would play together for nearly 20 years later. Also happy to say that I found a full audio recording of the Irving Place gig that was most memorable. The Hawaiian influence is present because he had just moved to Hawaii in 1996. This act was to be the setting of a cheap hotel off the Hawaiian strip. There were 3 sets and a comedian act during one of the intermissions. Great concept show, and an amazing performer, musician, engineer, song writer and philosopher. The only reason why he has not won a televised music award is that he is critical of the music industry's vampire policies and is extremely unconventional. He marches to his own tune and has a dedicated fan base. Rock on Todd !

    Todd has said that if he had to sing this song the same way for the rest of his life he would not be able to continue singing it. He wrote this arrangement to keep things interesting for him. He's too creative to be robotic about anything, including his own music. Love it or hate it, you gotta love Todd for always pushing the envelope.

    For everybody complaining about why he changes it. For one thing, he did it for whatever reason, he just felt like redoing it. But a big reason it's a the way it is is the song is naturally a typical jazz progression, so he brought that out a lot more in this version

    Todd is awesome! I love this Bossa Nova version. I am a bossa nova singer and one thing American's misunderstand is that you don't have to sing softly...he could amp up his voice a little bit and it would give the song a bit more life. BTW...I just know he's Liv Tyler's dad...look at his face and then look at hers.

    I love Todd, always have, but I have to admit, I saw him on this the tour for "With a Twist" and it was a little snoozy for sure. I mean, it was cool to see him in this setting, but a whole show of it...well, let's put it this way: "I Saw The Light" was one of the more rockin' songs of the show. Still, I listen to Todd all the time, still love him. Such a talent.

    electracoyote, you are missing the fun of Todd's re-working of his compositions into another genre. Do you realize how many fellow Brazilians now know who he is? And love his music? Also, he did a amazing job on the arrangements just to make them work in this other, totally different style. I mean I like Rock, AND I like Jazz, AND I like Reggae, AND I like Bossa Nova. Not many artists sound just as good in two or more of those styles. He is just amazing!

    saw him in austin twice about 6 years ago or less. once, he did the song this way, it's the bosa nova, once he did it wild, like the old song, that was at la zona rosa. either way, todd is WAY talented. handsomer now than then, too!

    At first it sounded odd how Todd's vocals seemed to be ahead of the melody but after listening a few times to "With a Twist" it really won me over. Great rendition of "Never Never Land" on this albumn too. I still like the original versions better except for "A dream goes on forever."

    It seems to me ( not a musical expert) that Todd is doing something incredibly difficult here. He is a master of so many instruments he has to go to a simple percussion instrument for the 'with a twist' concept. Then he is such an artist he wants to make it interesting for himself, hence the challenging beat hence the unusual phrasing. Mellifluous voice! What a master.

    I agree Wingman. If he sang the whole cd with the original phrasing it would have been better x10 IMO. Singing ahead of the music is what bad karaoke singers do when they are too drunk to listen to the backing tape. :D Todd will forever be my #1 hero though. :)

  • @minastronasse
    @minastronasse 15 лет назад

    Very strange timing indeed, but on purpose of course, he then did this song many times live this way. Besides, his instrument (a rather fragile percussion device from Uganda) helps to build a sensual atmosphere. He's using it with a lot of delicacy.

  • @interestingXmonster
    @interestingXmonster 15 лет назад

    This timing is classic Bossa Nova...I suspect if this song was translated into Portuguese that the vocal rhythm would be quite similar. I like the time warp at 3:40.

  • @upabittoolate
    @upabittoolate 16 лет назад

    now see, them riding out the fundamental mistiming is quizzical because there's always a human factor involved. the bandmates might all be looking at each other like "what the hell is todd doing? i dont know, just get through the set". but, if youve seen this done live, i cant question you. as far as unresolved tension & mathematical timing; i feel you then i dont. yes, it's all a math function but that's also a very empirical appreciation of an emotional value (to me). dissonance can be good.
