This is why I recommend Ubuntu as a starting point, it's not the most state of the art distro, but it has just been so stable for me, and instability is what might drive users away and create this idea of Linux being complicated.
I know someone might have a different experience, I went back to Ubuntu around 2-3 years ago, before that it wasn't so stable either, I'm still on the same installation now after switching graphics, CPU, Ram and such, while I somehow broke PopOS after 6 months or so. I've had this experience on multiple different devices, hence the assumption. I'm sure other distros have advanced a lot too!

great demo thank you, I am using ubuntu 22.04 tls, but there are 2 major things stop me from changing :
1- ububtu setup does not create data partirion by default to keep my data separate from OS which means every upgrade could move into severeuser data loss
2- printers on linux is the toughest issue now .. everytime I advise nyone to use linux, he/she comes back with big fireback because linux does not recognize his printer (usb/network) or at leaset uses very smal funtionality subset of printer advanced features (i.e print only)

    • @Eimantasks

@@Montpelier-sama I have never updated from one ubuntu version to the next, I always do clean installs because I am always afraid it will break, so I make a backup and just do clean install, because so many libraries are being updated something might break. I have more trust in rolling release dsitros like Fedora, those tend to upgrade better from one version to the next, and for wifi drivers, just do lsusb - if it's a wifi dongle if it's integrated you need to find a model of the chip and good chances are - that you will find drivers on github might have to install manually though.
If device is not supported can always use it with cheap wifi extender/repeater, or can purchase cheap usb wifi adapter, from my experience EDIMAX wifi adapters tend to work out of the box no tinkering needed.

@@Montpelier-sama Well if you hate doing that, can always stick to LTS which is good for like 5 years or so, or can use fedora OS if you like having latest GNOME, but it needs to be researched a bit better, I saw some people do successfully upgrade to newer Ubuntu releases, so those problems might not be happening consistently every time upgrade is required, I can't answer that since I always did clean installs, because backing up files just takes a few minutes and everything just works as it did before re-install.
I just use "Backups" GNOME app for that.

I've been using Linux (servers and desktops) for ages as a 28-year tech pro. The machine I'm making this comment from is an ARM-based SBC (Orange Pi 5) running 22.04. I can't figure out why the GUI for Ubuntu and other distros looks so cheep and cheesy. While 23.04 looks better, it still has this "cheap" quality to it that screams "yep, this is still the same old Linux". It almost has a kiddish feel to it like it was made for people who are not serious about computers, when we know that's not the fact. This HAS to be fixed before anyone is going to truly start taking this seriously as a Windows/Mac alternative. Of course the software ecosystem is the bigger problem, but the interface is not a small one. Lastly, Ubuntu and other distros need to start asking themselves what they bring to the table that will drive people to switch. I use many different operating systems in my work; use Ubuntu and Windows 11 at home., I can't, for the life of me, figure out why I would switch to Ubuntu on my main computer when Windows 11 works great for me, looks beautiful, etc. There's simply nothing appealing about Ubnuntu, for example, that's worth the jump. This has been so for decades now.
