Sean Hurley is two years younger than me, he is was one of greatest bassist of our generation. He is inspiration for me to be a better bassist, this every cool. The both of you should do more videos together, this helps us bassist and drummers.
@@JakeReedmusic This helpful when I do get to work with drummers, every drummers I ever met are the most easy going guys in the world. Cool 😎 cats!! We are the heart and soul of the band. You and Sean have bad ass kind of groove, love the song. When I get home I think I will try play along with you.
Sean is a beast, kinda reminds me of Nathan East with that impeccable understanding of how much the song can take. Good on you too Jake, for looking after the shop and let Kait and Sean shine!
I first learned about Sean Hurley when he played with Vertical Horizon. I just thought that he was another solid bassist. I had no idea that he’d be one of my biggest influences on the instrument, and a top session player all of these decades later. What an incredible player. He’s right up there with Willie Weeks for me.
Seriously so much good stuff going on here dissecting the feel of non verbal communication within a rhythm section. The sports analogies are on point - the concentration over thinking - not having to use your whole musical knowledge every song. Basically how to hang as a musician, serve the song/vibe, and not let any ego interfere with the groove. Love it! Wish I could give this knowledge to my 16 year old self. \m/\m/
Just found you through a video with Jake Reed and Sean Hurley, this is a beautiful little tune! Bought the sheet music, I needed some inspiration to get back behind the keys. Thank you.
Best bit of advise I was ever given (as a drummer, now bass player) - Less is More. Case/point; listen to the pros - they play like they have nothing to prove. Sometimes (most of the time) that's harder to do than some complicated fills. Good stuff here.
For me as a Drummer and Bassplayer this was just so amazing to Watch !!! I love Sean‘s Playing so much , and i also love your playing and your Musical understanding so much Jake !!! Wonderful Video Thank you !! Greetings Form germany
So many great nuggets to take away from this as a player, songwriter and producer! Thank you both! “A sliny bit ahead, might get a little bit behind, or might be right in the middle.” Words to live by.
Consistency is the keyword here. Different feelings and fill ideas will percolate up in your brain as the groove continues onward. Don’t take too many chances though. Maybe one Hail Mary pass per take but that’s it! Sean says “you’ve gotta invest in yourself.” Poignant advice from the master! He’s right! Love that slightly late snare too. I just subscribed!
Another golden video Jake! So much wisdom. It would have been interesting if you’d played and discussed certain ‘wrong’ snares/feels/basses etc, so we know what to look out for and avoid too!
I picked up another Fender P bass just to put flat rounds on it after listening Sean's tone. didnt want to mess with my 70's rock workhorse fender w/rounds its like right there. I subbed thanx for bringing him on your channel.
I'm on minute eight of this video, and I'm absolutely loving it. I've been a fan of Sean's tone and playing for a while, but now I'm starting to "get" the person behind it all. It's a lot of fun seeing him (and you) in a more laid-back setting!
oh damn this has got some great 70's California driving scene vibes... Jake you're as steady as a rock \m/\m/ So hard to just hang out in the pocket and not overplay.
In all honesty, I didn't know who Sean Hurley was until about 6 months ago. Ok, yeah, I live under a rock! LOL But, man am I glad I slithered out from under it! How much influence has he had on me in a short time? A lot!. I know I'm not going to be Sean Hurley, but I am going to have a TON of fun playing bass. I have 3 basses all of which were either J or PJ. I bought my 1st P bass back in November and I put LaBella Flatwounds on it. I search out his videos and study what he does. He has a great economy of movement, he's not show-boating, plays what is needed, adds a little extra flavor, and falls right back in the groove. He respects the music, his bandmates, and lets the song breathe and have a life of its own. What more do you need? Oh, yeah, play like Sean! LOL I'll be satisfied to improve at whatever my level is but I do work hard to enjoy each song, beat by beat. Thanks Sean!
The groove is strong with these ones... Seriously, so dang smooth n' sexy from all. Sean is always money and his tone is so, so good. That snare... damn that's deep n' tasty.
This was a fantastic video. A great insight into some the fundamental skills musicians should have. Absolutely loved this, would love to see more of this stuff :D
Sean’s fretting hand has an extreme level of economy of movement. Nothing wasted. Nothing extra. Simply serving the groove.
“Economy of Movement”.
Perfect application of the term here.
100% Yeah his technique is basically flawless I’ve noticed over the years

"You don't have to prove your worth and your musical education in every song!" - Sean Hurley.... this wisdom is pure gold.
@rick39guitarist then make sure you show off like it’s your last show! 😂😂😂
He can write a book with all the wisdom, I was watching SBL interview yesterday, everything he says is quotable 😂
i’m more impressed by sean’s restraint than i am by most “lead” bassists chops
It’s his superpower!
Sean is so in the pocket and tasteful, never plays more than is needed. A true master at work!
Totally masterful!
"You don't have to prove your worth and your musical education in every song" WISE words
My favorite line!
Even as a non musician appreciating the vibes here, those are words that applies to any field.

I love Sean. He is indeed one of the greatest, hands down. This is the third episode we’ve done and there is more to come! Thanks!

@@jamesrichardson3322 Awesome!
Man I could listen to full albums of just these three players - no lead - for days. So good.
I could listen to him for hours, so fricking tasteful.
Absolutely nailed the John Mayer - Vultures drum tone
Wooo! Good ears! Thanks dude.
@@JakeReedmusic Was thinking about vultures too when listening to this groove…really nice…great stuff!

Would’ve LOVED Kait Dunton’s take. I totally appreciate the brevity of video, but keys are in the rhythm section after all. She killed.
Totally. Her Take 3 was out of this world.
As a drummer, I aspire to play as groovily as this. Well done, guys!
Thanks man!

Sean: “If I don’t perfect the simple things I’ve got nothing”. Always an education with this man. Thanks for putting this up.
Cudowna muzyka.Wielkie dzięki.
This has late 70/early 80 vibe. It is so reminding me of those times even though I was still a toddler.
Sean Hurley ! Let's Go.
WOOOOOOO!!!
This kind of groove is IMHO all about consistency and being relaxed and confident.
Totally!

i laughed, I cried, I learned. Thanks guys.
Cool I didn't know Sean but from the moment you two started playing I could tell I love his bass playing. Thanks!
Thanks! He's such a beast.
yes, the pocket is king, as long as it settles everything works out. I've learned that a lot thru all the recording I've done over the pandemic
My favorite drummer is from Bob Marley and wailers..... the right touch 👌

Totally! It’s never failed me! Also, Ep. 2 of hangin’ with Hurley coming this Monday!
Once again, Sean's bass tone is incredible.
So incredible!
As a bassist, this video energized me as well as coffee. And I love coffee. Fantastic job to all 3 of you, you all killed it!!!
Haha! Love it! Glad you’re feeling energized! Thanks!
Holy moly this channel really is the gift that keeps on giving, some modern session icons in here 👏✨
Thanks dude! Giving is the goal.

This is badass. Seriously. I hope this video blows up.

Great jam, thanks for getting my morning off with a BOUNCE .
Yaaaay!!! Thank you!
I discovered Sean on “Everything You Want” (Vertical Horizon album) 1999. Been a fan ever since. Great groove and pocket, guys.
This..is ..it. Relax, don’t over play, and just hit the groove. Play with conviction. That said, everyone needs to be there rhythmically.
Take 2 smooth af
Niceeee! WTF groove Sean Hurley!

The deadpan interplay between is hilarious. Incredible music but super entertaining as well as educational.
I came to hear Sean’s bass playing, but I really love your drum playing and snare tone a lot!
Thank you!
sounds so groovy!
Thanks!
Sean is such a cool cat, and he's surely has that rare groove machine built in
Indeed!

This is my favorite snare sound
Bass is solid and grooving most players miss that everyone is doing their job not over playing

Lots of good advice in this video.
Stone-cold groovin. Gonna have to look into more of Sean's stuff!
He's seriously bad ... like 80s bad. Not bad bad. Like bad as in good.
Like Michael Jackson Bad.
the groove sounds like a mix between Vultures by John Mayer and Lullaby by The Cure. awesome! :)
Subscription added, fantastic, just discovered the joys of p bass n flatwounds
