Thank you for treating this like a native gaming tablet and not a streaming device for a $1000 PC This is one of the best reviews I've seen of it because you reviewed it properly
***** I saw you were playing with the nyko playpad pro which is only $20 Thanks x100 you saved me a lot of money. I can afford this with a controller now and maybe even that shield cover stand :) Nyko makes good controllers I heard, I've seen their Wii u pro controller got good reactions.
***** if you were playing trine 2 with the nyko which is a tegra k1 optimized game then I don't think it matters if you choose a shield controller or nyko. I'm definitely getting a nyko and the official shield cover stand, so for the price of a single controller I can have a controller and the cover
I'm so sorry about your dog man! She was born the same year I was. That's a really long life and I'm sure she had a great one with you :) Great review also, can't wait to get my Shield tablet!
I know this video was recorded over 2 years ago but I'm sorry to hear about your dog. Mine passed away over a decade ago and there's probably not a day that's gone by where I haven't thought about her. On a happier note, thanks for a great review of the Shield.
So sorry about your dog. :( I recently lost my dog too. I had her for 14 years, it's like losing a family member. When others only treat them has "pets". I'm so sorry for your loss, I know what you're going though. My heart goes out to you and to your family.
Really enjoyed your review of this tablet keep up the good work. Looking forward to more reviews. Ive just found your channel when looking for a review on this tablet looking through your review history will keep me busy for a while. Sorry to hear about your dog :( . I have a dog as well love her to bits.
Good review, you brought up a few things I haven`t heard in other reviews :) Also, sorry to hear about your dog, that`s always sad.. But hey 17 is a long life for a dog, and he/she was probably happy every day of his/her life, dogs kinda do that :D
You do a really good job at selling what you're reviewing, I think this could be the perfect tablet for me now! And sorry about your dog, I know the feeling, you and your family hang in there!
found answers to a lot of questions i had about this tablet. great video, and my condolences for your loss. i know precisely how it feels. thanks for the video.
***** i couldn't stop myself from subscribing! best hands on video i've seen that doesnt heavily focus on just the specs and makes the video a technical jargon, instead a very nice and honest review for an average end user who wont have any understanding of technical specs and will be looking for actual experience he will get out of the 300$ he is about to spend. kudos.
great review. thanks for posting it. I'm going to have to pick one of these up when i get paid. really sorry about your dog. its tough. they really do become part of the family.
If one of my dogs died, I'm fairly certain that I wouldn't be half as positive or smile half as much as you did in this video. You have nothing to apologize for. Sorry for your loss. They are our best friends and they are taken from us much too soon.
Sorry for your loss, I know how it is to lose a long time companion :( Great review, loved when you talked about the dolphin emulator, which isn't finished yet sadly, So it is expected for it not to run smoothly. I tested 'Tales of Symphonia' on the emulator and it went between 15 fps outside of combat and 10-15 in combat... Albeit with some changes made :)
Thank you for reviewing this tablet as I'm going to order this this week, one thing i think i missed in the video was what the battery life is like? Also im very sorry to hear about the loss of your dog :( i have one my self and they become like part of the family. best wishes to your family. Gary
Amazing review, I am very sad to hear of your loss... I'd probably be too depressed to do anything in life if my cat died... can't imagine a world without her :(
sorry to hear about your dog. can you do a review of the nvidia controller with the tablet? also I'd like to hear more about what computer hardware you were using for the game stream or whatever, and how that hardware works. doesn't it stream the video over WiFi to the tablets screen? I don't even know
You can easily connect an Xbox 360 wired controller with an OTG cable or a Moga power pro wireless controller for android tablets/phones to the shield tablet. Works perfectly
Just to inform Trine 2 was not designed for the Nvidia Shield and it looks as good as consoles, because it is a PC game that is optimized to run on the Shield.
Great video bro sorry bout your dog Sophie really like the video thou cause I was wondering if a different control would work as well and u showed that so thanks
Love it! Thanks for the recommendation! My only comments would be that, sometimes/at some angles I can sort of see each pixel very distinctly, that's the only time the tablet feels budget. I also seem to have problems with either netflix or a game running in the background that seemed to drain the battery insanely quick, giving it about a days life despite being predominantly on standby.
I should be getting my Shield tablet Monday afternoon and so now I'm shopping for a universal case. Do you have any that you recommend for this particular tablet?
Where can I buy the Nyko controller you're using? Do it also work with all in one emulators ie N64? So sorry for your loss Lon. Best wishes to you and your family.
Great video! I do have a couple of questions if you don't mind answering. This is going to be my first tablet. 1. How is this tablet for reading in comparison to other tablets? Is an 8 inch tablet good enough? I need a device for novels, comics/manga, documents, etc. 2. How long is the charging cable? This one I'm not too concerned with. I was thinking of getting another 10 ft cable. 3. How is the screen quality compared to other tablets? I will also be using this for movies, youtube, anime and twitch. 4. Does the system come with the HDMI cable? How does that work? Is it a normal HDMI to HDMI cable or is it a mini-HDMI to HDMI? 5. How is the audio in comparison to other tablets? For movies, music, ect. 6. Finally, how long is the battery life compared to other tablets? I will not be using this for gaming (even though I have a gaming rig to handle it. I do not see myself using that). Just want to know for the above multi-media purposes. Sorry to ask a lot of questions. I want to make a good purchase that I do not want to regret (also will be reading other sources for more info). Thanks again and sorry to hear about your dog =(
I just lost my surface pro 2 stylus and wonder if nvidia's shield tablet is better for drawing or should I stick with my sp2 and just buy another stylus?
Okay the GPU is awesome but how fast is the CPU? Is it better than QSD 800? 3D mark 56 fps is quite good but far away from PC graphics. My old Radeon HD 6850 got 900-1200 fps at the same benchmark.
Awesome video! I'm sure your dog would have loved this tablet. Lol. Sorry to hear about him but thanks for making that decision. Some people would let them suffer because they didn't want to let them go. After I decided to have my cat put down I then decided"No more animals for me". Videos should be a good distraction. I tried using that as a distraction and then found myself looking for my cat while on the computer forgetting she was gone. :( I'm glad i'm over t now though.
First of all, I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. I can definitely relate having shed tears for my past pets and have felt that sorrow for sure. Anyway, Excellent review!! I love my new Shield Tablet I got yesterday from Amazon.com. It is the best android tablet I've ever used and I really love it so far! I'm in NJ and I still can use the Grid app based in California. Games have some lag but still run perfectly fine. I particularly am enjoying Alan Wake: American Nightmare on Grid. I'm currently re-downloading Half Life 2 because the first time I downloaded it, I kept hitting play and it kept crashing right after the logo. Can you do me a favor and tell me if you can actually get Half Life 2 to make it past the logo screen? I paid $9.99 so hoping I can get it to work or they will have a fix coming out soon. I Haven't bought portal yet but plan to. Great tablet!!!
Half Life 2 works now after 4 separate attempts or download. It is an AMAZING game!! It's a PC game on my shield tablet! I'm astonished at how amazing it looks on my shield tablet! Can't wait to buy Portal now.
how does the wifi work in the tablet? probably a stupid question. reason i ask is cause in both my recent iPhones the wifi always dropped and it drove me crazy. i know ones a phone and ones a tablet, but they're similar enough. the Shield will be my first tablet. thanks
Hello good review. Does this tablet have the ability to move apps to the external SD card? That's a huge deal considering there's only 16gb and games are up to 3gb each now
Yeah definitely makes things annoying trying to get all my favorite apps on there. There's always the option to root the device though and install Foldermount which moves the large game data files to the External SD card. That's what I do with my 5 GB HTC phone with a 64GB micro sd card. I have like 30 GB of games running from my SD card :)
***** I don't understand.. I have my Nvidia Shield Tablet and I ran out of memory about a week in. So I popped a 32gb SD card in and moved a few games over from the tablet to the card. No rooting or any special settings. I just went to settings then storage and moved for instance Modern Combat 4 which is about 2gb. I can still play it fine and even multiplayer. It it just illegal to play it from the card??
Shield tablet is $299 vs EVGA note 7 Tegra 4 tablet that is $159. Have you seen/heard of the EVGA T4 tablet? Do you think the Shield is worth almost twice the cost?
+Il Sinistero Hi! Thanks for the reply. I only see the upgrade for the K-1 tablet, not for the original Shield. Can that upgrade be used for the original?
Victor Bocaling sorry, my mistake, yes, its available for the k1 shield and I don't know if it works on the "original" shield, but since the hardware is pretty the same, I guess chances are high it will work. anyway, if you want to get a shield tablet, if you buy it new you only get the k1, or are you planning on buying it second hand?
+Il Sinistero There are several post-recall Shield (32 GB + LTE) units on offer on eBay. If hardware spec wise the Shield & K-1 are the same, my only concern is 1) can I upgrade the OS to Marshmallow & 2) has the battery really been replaced. The 32GB internal memory & the LTE capability is kinda hard to resist. And, it comes with a charger & the stylus.
Hey sir, So this is very long and i do apologize but I've really enjoyed a bunch of your reviews and I'm doing some research on this particular device in hopes of purchasing it. So I was wondering if you would be willing to answer a few dummy questions. So to start with a background I am in the US Air Force and I deploy on a regular basis, I'd also like to think I am an entry level PC Gamer. When I deploy I usually take my faithfully aged First Generation iPad (due for replacement) and my Acer Aspire V3 Laptop which suffered from a broken keyboard during my last tour this past summer (so also due for replacement). ^^^P.S: As you may guess I'm actually typing this using the On-Screen Keyboard so seriously thank you for reading! So my goal is to lower my baggage footprint by replacing both of those devices with one. I enjoy games ranging from the Total War Series, Star Wars Battlefront(2015), League of Legends, StarCraft 2, the Fallout Series. Of Course it would need to do all the normal "tablet-y things" such as low-medium demand school work and running video based two-way communication programs (i.e. Skype, Facetime, whatever mumbo-jumbo Android has) which i'm sure shouldn't be an issue. Bottom Line... My toys are old & broken and i want a newer/smaller/smarter one that looks & acts like a tablet but can still run my favorite games on at least their lowest settings... Is this product right for me? If No is there a different product you would recommend? If No are my expectations even achievable based on an average salary and today's price-points & technology? Thanks for reading, -Patrick Bisigni jeffersonraised@gmail.com P.S.S: My Wife and I own a husky ourselves! Their great dogs, knuckleheads sometimes, but overall great dogs. I'm sure she'll help you remember your loss in the best way possible. Regardless if you reply or not... Good luck with her shedding o.O its horrible.
Heres a list of android games you can play on the Nvidia shield portable and Nvidia shield tablet. You can play these games with a controller and all you need is the Nvidia device. You don't need a PC to play any of these games. Also allot of these games have PS3 graphics. Well technically when in console mode or on the tablet there better than ps3 graphics becasue allot of these games run at 1080p and most PS3 games run at 720p. Android games in no particular order: Modern combat 4, modern combat 5, need for speed most wanted, spider man 2, NBA jam, Double dragon, Dungeon hunter 4, Mass effect infiltrator, Real boxing, Grantheft auto san andreas, grand theft auto 3, grand theft auto vice city, Max payne, Unearthed/ this is basically uncharted, Nova 3, Injustice, Asphalt 8, Contract kill2, frontline 2, Minecraft, Dino hunter, Aces, MC4, Half life 2, Crazy taxi, Voxel Rush Bomb squad, shadow gun, the sonic series, Beach buggy Blitz, Riptide GP2, Alien VS Predator Evolution or AVP evolution for short, The walking dead, Expendable Rearmed, Shine Runner, Neon Shadow, Dead Trigger 2. Theirs also Emulators for PSP, PS1, N64, NES, super Nintendo and maybe more. Also these devices are running android so that means Netflix is available, RUclips, FB, Twitter any thing and everything available on android is available on the shield devices. Theres also games you can stream with the Grid app. You don't need a computer for that either and the service is free until June. You will need a decent connection though. as in a good/ 5GHZ router for sure. I would get a good modem as well not a must have though. Also i have gone to friends houses and They didn't have the best network setup and streamed from the grid app and had vary few problems. I might have had an occasional stutter but nothing extreme and definitely nothing bad enough to make me want to stop playing the game. Also for the record i don't live in California. I live in GA. The Reason thats important is because Nvidia's servers are in California and the grid service at first was only released in California. I hope this helped some one.
alexandre travassos I bought the tablet and I have a Moga Bluetooth controller. I have tried playing games like Modern Combat 4 and Dead Trigger 2. In response time its a bit laggy from controller to tablet. It maybe the controller, i haven't tried Nyko brand but hearing more and more about it, I may give it a try. But my controller is no where near console speeds. I'm a fairly competitive fps gamer and I plan to get the Shield controller. I've heard it running through WiFi makes it have a faster response time and seeing a few reviews on it supports that.
Thank you for treating this like a native gaming tablet and not a streaming device for a $1000 PC

Great review also, can't wait to get my Shield tablet!
Great review Lon, sorry for your loss.
Sorry to hear about your dog. Keep up the great work. You're definitely one of RUclips's best tech reviewers by a mile. Great review.

Thanks for the great review. So sorry to hear about your dog. At least he had a long and cared for life.
That's good to hear. Thanks for the reply.
Thanks for reviews ! Reicast running very well on this :) Sorry about your dog, i know what you feel.

Sorry to hear about your dog thought.
Sorr about your dog, i've experienced that grief:/
Great review, can't wait for the great hardware/software from nvidia in the near future!!:)

great review. thanks for posting it. I'm going to have to pick one of these up when i get paid.
really sorry about your dog. its tough. they really do become part of the family.

thanks for the the link and the information. you answered my question. thanks pal.

sorry to hear about your dog.
Even though I own a shield tablet I still love watching your reviews
Sorry for your loss, I know how it is to lose a long time companion :(
Great review, loved when you talked about the dolphin emulator, which isn't finished yet sadly, So it is expected for it not to run smoothly. I tested 'Tales of Symphonia' on the emulator and it went between 15 fps outside of combat and 10-15 in combat... Albeit with some changes made :)
"Golden age of mobile" is a nice way of saying it... But really, some games on mobile these days are crazy! I still remember 'snake' on my motorola xD

***** ahh thanks, i kind of expected that to be the case anywhoo ive got mine ordered now with the controller and the case :D
RIP.. really beautiful dog :-) still!!! -)
Sorry to hear about your dog man.
Excellent review! Thinking about picking this up as my first tablet.
Very nice video ,sorry to hear about your dog...
Thanks for the video. Big plus for the reicast demo.
Amazing review, I am very sad to hear of your loss... I'd probably be too depressed to do anything in life if my cat died... can't imagine a world without her :(

Tegra k1 is AWESOME... Love to get the Tegra K1 Jetson board...
Best review I ever saw good work
8 years ago?? Damn this thing is a lot older than I thought lol.
Just an FYI for ya, your review has stomped the other Shield reviews and I feel that it was the most helpful I have seen so far.
Very sorry about your dog. Beautiful.
You can easily connect an Xbox 360 wired controller with an OTG cable or a Moga power pro wireless controller for android tablets/phones to the shield tablet. Works perfectly

Great video bro sorry bout your dog Sophie really like the video thou cause I was wondering if a different control would work as well and u showed that so thanks
Keep up the good work
Bought one on impulse after watching your many reviews, thanks!
Great review. I'm sorry to hear about your dog. My thoughts and prayers go out to you today.
Galatians 2:20
I should be getting my Shield tablet Monday afternoon and so now I'm shopping for a universal case. Do you have any that you recommend for this particular tablet?
A really good review! Thank you! Is console mode also compatible with a monitor?
Did you use the play store build of dolphin because that don't work. You have to get a newer build off there website
So is the nvidia tablet with the stylus less powered than the newer model nvidia tablet without the stylus?
Thanks again and sorry to hear about your dog =(
Sorry about your dog and also if you have the xiaomi mipad pad can you compare it to the shield tablet
I would be interested to know how 1080p video streaming works on it, like netflix or youtube
Sorry about your dog :(
I know how it feels. Going to hug mine now :(
***** do you think you could tell me which mini HDMI to HDMI cave you used cause I'm looking for a good one
Could you do a video on how to stream your games outside of home please.
Love you Sophie!
Lon not sure if you've heard about this kingsing tablet. Chinese made its windows 8.1 16gb, 1gb ram for $99 bucks. Would be a nice thing to check out.
How much better is this then the slate special?
The 32 gb version is already avaible? Where can i find?
I think you have to toggle open gl back end for dolphin emulator to work
very late i know but sorry about your dog =( and great review though, thanks for doing it =)
RIP Sophie
I just lost my surface pro 2 stylus and wonder if nvidia's shield tablet is better for drawing or should I stick with my sp2 and just buy another stylus?
What bluetooth controller do you use? BTW I just bought the tablet and love it. I use an OTG to hook up my PS3 controller.
*****
Thanks for the reply. I see so many Nyko bad reviews. If you are using one and have no problems, then I might get one.
Sorry dude but i have many questions for you :(
I can play this with a ps3 controller? Without lags?
hey, would you mind telling me what controller you are using?
Lon the reason you are not going back to nvidia shield interface thingy is because you are not using that original one.
would the tegra note 7 stylus work with tegra note K1?
Interesting tablet. I want one.
do the games it runs have keyboard and mouse support?
Sorry to hear about your dog , He is in heaven
I know the feeling my cat of 15 years died it hurt for a long time be strong for your family dude ....Peace

Can you connect a Xbox 360 or PS3 control to the tablet?
what controller is he using in the demonstration?
Thank you for the link! and for the videos.
Sorry about your best friend..My dog lucky lay down and died last year..16 years old
Thank you Lon
Bought this for my DJI phantom 3 advanced and for mobile gaming.

199 now
Can this tablet's Android OS be upgraded to the latest one ver 6.0 (Marshmallow)?
+Victor Bocaling yes, it can! android 6.0 is already available from nvidia :)

CAN YOU PLAY PPSSPP or 3ds emulator on this perfectly without frame skipping and speed hacks? + sounds?
PPSSPP probably but 3DS emulators still won't work properly
do you think if i use the n64 emu on ppsspp then mario 64 will work with synchronous sound mode? or asynchronous?
Not sure
Hey sir,
So this is very long and i do apologize but I've really enjoyed a bunch of your reviews and I'm doing some research on this particular device in hopes of purchasing it.
Thanks for reading,

P.S.S: My Wife and I own a husky ourselves!
Android games in no particular order:
Modern combat 4, modern combat 5, need for speed most wanted, spider man 2, NBA jam, Double dragon, Dungeon hunter 4, Mass effect infiltrator, Real boxing, Grantheft auto san andreas, grand theft auto 3, grand theft auto vice city, Max payne, Unearthed/ this is basically uncharted, Nova 3, Injustice, Asphalt 8, Contract kill2, frontline 2, Minecraft, Dino hunter, Aces, MC4, Half life 2, Crazy taxi, Voxel Rush Bomb squad, shadow gun, the sonic series, Beach buggy Blitz, Riptide GP2, Alien VS Predator Evolution or AVP evolution for short, The walking dead, Expendable Rearmed, Shine Runner, Neon Shadow, Dead Trigger 2.
Does anyone know if the architecture of this device will allow dual booting with windows 8?

Lon.TV hey im thinking of getting a shield k1 tablet but...is there any advantage of having the lte version instead of just wifi?
it's pretty cool this thing is more powerful than the xbox 360
so cool
Can i play this device with another controller?
Thanks
Sorry but i have other ask. Can i play console games in that device? And the controller have some lag?
Where can i find a box from nvidia that contains shield cover, shield controller and the shield tablet?
Best buy?
alexandre travassos I bought the tablet and I have a Moga Bluetooth controller.
Sorry about your dog
