    Excellent tutorial! Very comprehensive and very well presented. But there are a few extra things I should mention:
    1. By placing platforms with smart cursor you can get stairs, which can let you attack and move through blocks. This is a lot faster than hammering platforms for walls 3 or more tiles high. You can also swap the stairs for solid blocks, making hammerless hoiks. I used this method to perform Ethyriel's coin door desync method in a skyblock world without wood.
    2. At 29:33 The "visual headache" can be avoided by building the invincibility machine near the top or bottom of the world, since the camera won't move there.

    This is actually really cool. I knew the basics on hoiking, but I learned a lot from the sections on subtile positioning (and how it affects hoiking), hoik collision handling exceptions (hoiks can behave differently depending on player position and hoik configuration), and half-blocks (which, from what I can tell is highly related to subtile positioning). Honestly, this has to be one of the best hoik guides I have ever seen.

Hoik is a very interesting and is useful in niche situations, but is generally more of a spectacle which requires more setup than it's worth for the average player. Of course, there's still value to the simpler hoiks, wallclipping being a primary example. overall, solid video

    In theory, you can reduce the screen movement of the invincibility machine by building it either at the top or bottom of the world. The screen lock occurs based on the screen range, so zooming out fully results in the screen locking in a larger range. Not sure if it would reduce it completely but it would reduce it mostly.

    PSA You dont regen band to regen 3 hp/s in the fall-damage invincibility machine; save those valuable accessory slots! Drinking health potions allows us to generate health, since when we are invincible we dont have to worry about saving our potions for tanking large hits. Campfires, heart lanterns, and honey add 0.5, 1 and 1 hp/s respectively meaning we can reach 2.5 hp/s passively. Lesser health potions generate about 0.8 health per second, bringing us up above 3hp/s with a wide margin to be slow about potion usage. Heart statues work too if afk-ing (~2hp/s best case single statue). TL;DR drinking lesser health potions generates HP a just under what a regen band does, but thats enough to free up a valuable accessory slot.

    There was this one golfing map I remember playing, I think it was Puttraria by Khaios if I recall correctly, and there is an invisible hoik made out of echo blocks / echo coating on the map. Sure, a teleporter would've had the same end goal, but the *way* they got you into the next course using a hoik is thematic for the hole.
    Being vague so people can get the map for themselves and stumble upon it without many spoilers about it.

  • @captheobbyist6434
    @captheobbyist6434 Год назад

    the simpler way to describe when hoik is valid or not is that the game checks for 2 directions to where to move the player.
    it first checks block to the up of the hypotenuse. if it's blocked, it moves to the other side of the hypotenuse. so thats why vertical hoiks dont require any support, because by default it goes upwards/downwards. for sideways movement. you should block the top or bottom blocks for it to work.

    • @sorbetcafe
      @sorbetcafe  Год назад +1

      That doesn’t take into account the fact that blocks sloped into particular configurations will bypass that check and allow vertical movement, though.

  • @nyscersul42
    @nyscersul42 Год назад

    My general implementation of hoiks, is using them to expel teleported enemies from the teleporter's active zone fast enough to be able to have the enemies teleporting from the spawn zone at quarter second intervals, and still clear that active zone. It means i run bloodmoon and most things die in under a second from their spawn, since each side usually has 3 teleporter zones, and the 3/4 of a second to cycle, the they get thrown into an instadeath killzone. Nice. :P

    • @nyscersul42
      @nyscersul42 Год назад

      You mentioned the time spent walking, apparently your design for the rod of discord farm eliminates this. It doesn't, it does massively reduce it and is quite efficient but the above method using the teleporters as well actually does eliminate the walk delay. Of course, it does require wiring, and not a simple lot. Mine uses logic and this can be replicated in prehardmode with chained timers, but it's even more complex wiring then. Either way the example was a fun one for it's ease of creation.

    • @sorbetcafe
      @sorbetcafe  Год назад +1

      I'm familiar with setups like that and considered doing something similar, the black recluse lucky coin farm had a dummy engine-powered teleporter setup that hoiked enemies into a box, but I didn't want to add extra wiring for a non-major impact. You could definitely improve on the farm in a few ways, like I said in the video.

    • @nyscersul42
      @nyscersul42 Год назад

      @@sorbetcafe yep, many ways for improvement, my main point tho was the hoiks shine when used as a mix with other things. I've even gone so far as using hoiks mixed with minecarts. :P
