    I remember dancing to this as Belle in my schools production. It was very hard for me not to cry and mess up my makeup because this moment was sooooooo magical in the show, and was definitely one of my favourites.

    Just finished my opening night for my high school’s production of Beauty and the Beast. I’m one of the violinists in the pit, and our Mrs. Potts wasn’t able to hit the low notes, so they transposed the piece up a whole step, so we played in the key of E major, and F# major. By far the most magical piece ever in a musical, especially in our new key.

    Mrs. Potts:
    Tale as old as time
    True as it can be
    Barely even friends
    Then somebody bends
    Unexpectedly.
    Just a little change
    Small to say the least
    Both a little scared
    Neither one prepared
    Beauty and the Beast.
    Ever just the same
    Ever a surprise
    Ever as before
    Ever just as sure
    As the sun will rise.
    Tale as old as time
    Tune as old as song
    Bittersweet and strange
    Finding you can change
    Learning you were wrong.
    Certain as the sun
    Rising in the east
    Tale as old as time
    Song as old as rhyme
    Beauty and the Beast.
    Tale as old as time
    Song as old as rhyme
    Beauty and the Beast.
    Off to the cupboard with you now, Chip.
    It's past your bedtime. Good night, love.

    My middle school is doing the full version of this show. I'm in eighth grade so it is my last show with the drama community in that school. I'm in the sound crew and there is no doubt I'll be crying by the time this song comes up. Our drama club is such a large and close knit family that this song means more to me than just in the context of this "tale as old as time." Even now as I'm thinking of how close the end is (our opening night is just under a week and we perform 3 shows) I'm getting teary-eyed...

    I HAVE to see this on Broadway (if it ever opens again). It's been a favorite story of mine since I was a little girl. I've never been to a Broadway show, but if I only make it to one in my whole life, it better be Beauty and the Beast. I know it wouldn't be starring Terrance Mann and Susan Egan, but I know that whoever it would be would be amazing. I wish someone could tell me if it was ever opening again, and if so, where and when?

    • @Treemotan
      @Treemotan 7 лет назад +1

      Catherine CRC If there's any big cities near you with a big theater or theater district, I'd see if it has a website. Usually you can see everything lined up, be they tours or performances done by that theater's troupe, for the next few months. You can also usually look up the show you're interested in online and see if they're doing any tours. I imagine that Beauty and the Beast will PROBABLY be revived and/or go on tour sometime after the new movie comes out. It happened with Into the Woods and Les Miserables, so I imagine it'll happen with BatB.

    • @CatieCass
      @CatieCass 7 лет назад +1

      Treemotan That's what I thought too! I think you're right. With the new movie coming out, I wouldn't be surprised if it did open again. Thanks for the info!

    • @Treemotan
      @Treemotan 7 лет назад +3

      Catherine CRC Another little tip, if you're unfamiliar with actually going to live shows; tickets for shows, especially if they're a Broadway tour, can get pretty expensive. Anywhere from $100-$500, depending on the theater and where the seat's at. If you can be spur-of-the-moment, going alone (not strictly necessary, but it gives you more options), and aren't particularly picky about where you'll be seated, it's worth knowing that for most theaters, the closer they are to the actual date of the show, the cheaper the tickets will be since they're trying to fill empty seats. If you're close enough or want to risk it, I've even seen places cut ticket prices by as much as 50% or 75% on the night of the performance it's for. Again, a bit of a risk especially if you live far away from the theater in question, but it IS how I got a front-row seat to Cats for what would normally be the price of a peanut seat so as far as saving money goes it's all good info to know.

    • @CatieCass
      @CatieCass 7 лет назад +1

      +Treemotan You're so right, they are very expensive. But it's still definitely worth looking into!

      Definitely go see it if it ever shows again! I got to see it back in 1995 with the original Broadway cast and it was amazing!! The costumes were stunning, the staging just brilliant, and the actors were fabulous! My friend and I were in tears by the end of the show.

    Such a beautiful song

  • @SamuelDJCox
    @SamuelDJCox 7 лет назад +54

    This is magical. It's no Angela Lansbury, but in its own way this still captures the same spirit of the original. Furthermore, it's proof that just because it's NOT Angela doesn't mean it can't be great. The reason I felt the new version in the new film wasn't great - wasn't because it's not the original (this song here is proof that a new version can be just as magical) it was more because the rhythm of the song was all over the place, they removed key parts of the orchestration which are both here and in the original and there just wasn't the same gusto in the performance.
    Just in the way both Angela Lansbury and the singer here put real emphasis and happiness into the way they sing 'tale as old as time' at 2:50, you can feel the emotion - you can tell she's not just happy that Beast and Belle are falling in love - she's happy because what she's seeing is an affirmation of something larger, of the fact that their love is part of something which is all encompassing, she's seen it happen time and time before, and their falling in love (something which would seem impossible) is proof that it will always continue to be there and it represents the best in humanity - all of that is felt in the delivery. It's not just a pretty song with a nice message, it's an anthem in which you should quite literally hear the singer herself/himself going on an emotional journey in discovering the beauty of which she or he and all those around them are capable of.

      @@spilleren9173 Haha I didn't have to think much about it really - it's just what struck me as I was listening.
      Sometimes a great performance can be more than just moving and beautiful, when done well you can hear exactly what version of the story they are tellling so it's always nice to hear what they bring to it. :-)

      This is indeed a wonderful version by Beth Fowler. I love how this song is sung from a bystander that has seen love many times. It is bittersweet and strange, indeed. Bambi's song ''Looking for Romance'' is different in this regard, but just as beautiful. ''Looking for Romance is more like the sheer rush of happiness that comes with young love.

    This is a pretty nice rendition of the song. My college's theater company put on this show earlier this year (before the outbreak began), and the woman playing Mrs. Potts actually sounded a lot like Angela Lansbury when she sang this song. Coupled with our live orchestra performing the song, the fog machine, and of course Belle and the Beast dancing. it was a beautiful moment.
