It’s amazing to hear Ricky draw out a more dynamic and playful Sam. His cadence and energy is lifted.
I had to put my head phones on to hear the rare Sam Harris laugh. Sam’s fan from Pakistan 🇵🇰 BTW. ✋🏻
Sam, could you please add Ricky Gervais' friend Karl Pilkington to the mix for an episode (or more)?
I'd buy it in a heartbeat...I'd pay extra if they animated it
I would pay just about anything to hear Karl talk to Sam. Karl might be the only guy who can genuinely explode Sam's brain.
YES!!!
Make it happen Dana
That would be like that hilarious moment in Sams first Joe Rogan podcast when Joe left to pee and Sam was alone with Brian Redban. Sam looked like he was drowning in ignorance.
I gave birth twice under self hypnosis. Pretty amazing what we're capable of. I understood pain was present and understood the reason for it, but did not feel the agony associated with the the birth. It presented itself as a temporary stressor I had to breathe through. I talked calm through it all...with pauses for focus through more severe contractions.
How did you know how to perform self hypnosis on yourself? If had a friend who was about to give birth where should we look to try this?
@@danzwku I received training from a group of midwives. I feel confident there is information on the internet. They called it hypnobirthing. It's a technique that I've continued to use in life when faced with acute pain. It's a handy little skill.
I have a feeling that you are talking out of your arse!
ooh, trolls ⬆️ have feelings? no?oh, if they were in touch with their feelings they wouldn't need to make inane comments just to get some attention?oh, now i see.
@@mindsigh4 the epidural probably helped more than self-hynosis
I think this is the first time I’ve heard Sam laugh
rare as a stradivarius
That's exactly what I was thinking. It's good to hear Sam just naturally laughing and not holding back.
ed B--you should listen to the podcast with this wife. It is quite wholesome actually.
He looks like Ben Stiller, so it seems even stranger that he hardly ever laughs.
This thumbnail is Ricky bullying Sam and Sam trying desperately to ignore it and no one will tell me otherwise.
Maybe you should do less drugs and start trying harder [in life].
I can see that, yeah.
Or two seasons in realizing that it's not Ben Stiller he's been talking to.
This was fun! Hearing Sam laugh is a treat.
Two of my favorite people. Can’t believe I’ve just discovered this podcast.
The closest thing to dying is fainting. That happened to me several times. You are completely out. No dreams. It's like you are dead. You wake up and maybe you were out for a long time. You're not aware of anything.
I know I died once just like you described...
Is like time goes extremely fast
I’ve had lots of tonic-clonic seizures and was definitely more out than general anaesthesia, the latter of which I had some memory of something and the passage of time. With my full epileptic seizures there’s absolutely nothing until consciousness slowly comes back (after memory) after it’s over.
Yes. Fainting can be an uncomfortable but fascinating experience. I think that I have had some very vague memories while I was unconscious due to fainting. I kind of felt like I was on some battlefield, in the trenches. I heard shouts and bangs. Then I slowly returned to the ‘real’ world.
Have you died before to know it's like fainting? Fainting is a survival mechanism triggered by the brain to protect itself so that all resources go to the brain, namely the blood that otherwise goes to the muscles and the oxygen is spent there.
I would imagine that like many other things that go on in your body, death is not manifested in a single way. For the lucky ones it may be painless, for others the brain may trigger pain to a level consistent with the severity of the situation to trigger action from the conscious part.
"a belief is also a physical act in your brain"
that really explains a lot for me. simple yet wow
Isnt it perfectly succinct and powerful. Sams ability to make statements like this come from his two very different yet complementary areas of pursuit, his neuroscience background and ongoing enquiry and then his meditation background and ongoing development of self awarness and equanimity.
Just because it’s in your brain doesn’t mean it originates from your brain.
@@vb6548 Thats just another way of saying that we still dont fully understand the universe or the human brain, its too easy to say and adds nothing of value to the ongoing persuit of truth because everyone already knows that. Its much more interesting to focus on what we do know and testing out more hypothesis. Belief/faith is almost certainly another evolutionary trait that was helpful enough or not too detrimental to our ancestors survival and made its way through the natural selection process. But sure, you can try and "believe" otherwise.
@@vb6548 though, I will add that quantum entanglement is real and means that it could be possible to effect someones mind/body even from millions of lightyears away.
@@constantchange1145 we cant even prove that 1+1=2 is true and you talk about quantum entanglement and pursuit of truth, thats funny dude
Just bought both seasons and started listening. The "would you rather" episode from season 1 is hilarious 😂🤣🤣
Reminder... never drink coffee next to your computer while listening to Gervais. Dell's warranty doesn't cover it.
I hope Karl Pilkington Makes an appearance at some stage during this podcast.
Love this duo!
Thanks for sharing Sam.
Gervais could not have found a better straight man to bounce his brand of humor off of.
as someone who has been put under roughly 10 times now for assorted surgeries I can tell you that for me, now, it is exactly like falling asleep
that is to say, since my last major surgery (maybe 10 years ago now) falling asleep is an almost violent experience that i quite dread (though am somewhat used to) and always feels like a thing being done to me - rather than a natural occurrence
i used to like to lay in bed waiting to fall asleep, now it kind of feels like dying
I appreciate this combination of serious and seriously funny.
I love the way you debate with Deepak very calm very smart
These are very entertaining to listen to and I hope it serves as motivation for Ricky to explore the possibilities with selfawarness, possibly even sitting a 10day Vipassana course. Listening to them talk about it right after Ricky leaves the course would be so great. But I respect the fact that Sam knows from experience now not to push that on people, or he at least has learnt much better ways to approach the subject when it comes up with someome who has yet to spend a significant amount of time with such a pursuit.
A sense of humor is worth more than any amount of vipassana.
@@Walklikeaduck111 nah not really, they're certainly not mutually exclusive either
Rick was right about general anesthesia, actually; you can check out the Mayo Clinic page on it if you like. Regarding breathing, for instance, there is a qualified anesthetist there to monitor your breathing, but they don't specifically have to do the breathing for you, they just make sure you remain stable. General anaesthesia is where you are rendered more or less (usually more) unconscious and the brain no longer receives pain signals; local is only for a specific part of the body.
I was just checking to see if someone else caught this. Sam was also wrong in another episode where they were talking about hypoallergenic dogs, with Sam arguing that hypoallergenic dogs were only designed so that dogs don't shed as often because people don't want hair on their clothes and furniture and has nothing to do with people's allergies. But of course the reason for less shedding is due to allergies, hence the name lol.
It's just funny because Sam says things with such confidence that I have to check again on things that I already know the answer to haha. I'm not picking on him for being wrong. I'm wrong all the time. I like him a lot, but I love Ricky. Some people who only know him vaguely, from his stage persona, etc., think of him as being vulgar and mean, but he couldn't be more of a sweetheart.
Kudos to two brilliant and entertaining men. Thank You!
This podcast is absolutely British
Thank you 🙏
I will watch it 👩💻
Ive been an admirer of Sam Harris for many years (and Ricky Gervais), learning that he is a Beatles fan raises him even further in my estimation :)
Ricky's canines just make me LOL
His peg laterals make the mesial of his canines more pronounced. Simple veneers on his laterals would fix the esthetics
My experience with Propofol was like someone slowly twisting my arm off at the shoulder. Excruciating, unexpected pain.
The Harris team couldn't get a pic of Sam smiling for this cover? Lol
He is smiling.
I’ve never seen a happier smile in my life, frankly.
Glorious intervention 🤣🤣🤣
Was funny made me laugh thankyou needed in this time
Nice one Ricky and Sam.
Just waiting for Ricky to say the Irish can't be hypnotized cuz their drunk's 🥃🥃🥃😋!
*They're drunks
That was fun.
When I was a child in the 1960's I also had 'gas' to have a tooth out. Ricky's comments reminded me of this. I can recall a strange smell & seeing what appeared to be a circle composed of rotating multi-coloured elastic bands until I fell asleep.
So did I, in the eighties.
same, turns out the circle was the med light, eyes weren't completely closed. Your welcome.
Ben Stiller for the Gervais Directed Satire Biopic. Lets go.

Why are there different states of non drug induced consciousness? Lucid dreams, dreams that you experience but can’t control. Seem to be existing in consciousness, for example.
So under a general or twighlight the pain sensation doesn't get to the brain, but the body keeps the score...requiring at least somatic repression..it's a sensation, an energetic jolt to move. I'd bet that if longitudinal studies looked at many surrounding issue/joint/cancers, disorders of movement, nightmares, etc., the unconscious knows.
A body-oriented practice, like that practiced and taught by Reggie Ray, (practice name escapes me) in which the body is the spiritual point of entry, and thus the object of meditation, could elucidate about such occurrences. .
Furthers the seeming mind-body split, as do pain killers.
I very much enjoyed the discussion and will check out the show. You're funny in conversation with this comedic genius, Ricky Gervais; that's a compliment. Nice to see this diversity. Dave Chappelle's an interesting, thoughtful and quite humorous fellow....food for thought?!
Brilliant
I would like animation or some visual stimuli but just the audio is fun

A beardless Billy Connolly watching on.
hello Sam do you have an opinion about the book A course in miracles?
I've had mildly similar experience to that foot dunking in hot water experience. A few times in my life, I wanted to drink milk, but I was out of it, so I resorted to water instead. For half a second, I thought I was drinking milk, then the realizat kicked in: "this milk tastes weird."
But for that split second, I thought I was drinking milk.
I'm a bit confused. The website says subscription. Is that for all future episodes, or per season? I bought a subscription for season 1. Seems odd to call it a subscription when all episodes of the season are released at the same time.
Think it's a one time payment per season. Ye subscription is the wrong word. More in a technical sense, you subscribe to the feed that gets you the audio. But you don't subscribe to regular payments.
@@dfzdjs That's what I was thinking.
Get Karl Pilkington on!!!! Even the title is Pilkingtonian.

What sort of colonoscopy requires a general anaesthetic. I was awake when they did mine and there was no actual pain that would require being knocked out.
3 minutes on google:
AMERICAN SOCIETY OF ANESTHESIOLOGISTS
"Almost all colonoscopies in the United States are performed with patients under a level of sedation or anesthesia that prevents them from feeling anything. Often, patients are asleep for the entire procedure."
TEMPLE HEALTH
"The level of planned anesthesia determines who will be administering the sedation. For example, light or moderate sedation are usually administered by the gastroenterologist performing the procedure. Deep sedation and general anesthesia are administered by a nurse anesthetist or anesthesiologist.
Most patients tell me that they want to be totally asleep during the procedure (“Just knock me out, Doc.”) That would mean general anesthesia. But this level has a higher risk for a complication, so when I explain the options, most patients are agreeable to a lower level of anesthesia."
UFHEALTH:
"The question of sedation is a critical one in the United States, where the number of colonoscopies with anesthesiologist-administered sedation has risen in the last decade even as the federal government and private insurers seek to control costs."
I've had several and first one was pretty painless. All others have been done under twilight because I had had a surgery before them which left me with adhesions. That is worse pain that you can even imagine., I woke up during the procedure a few times each time and they gave me more sedation. Without it it would be impossible for me to go trough it and I'm not that sensitive to pain. It really hurts like hell for some people.
The sedation they (almost surely) gave you is what made you either not experience or not remember the pain. I had a sigmoidoscopy once, which is the same as a colonoscopy, but they don't go in so far, and they gave me no anesthesia for that. It was probably the most physically uncomfortable experience of my life. The nurse was actually pushing on my abdomen to direct the scope correctly, and I spent the whole time literally biting down on the blanket to prevent from making embarrassingly unmanly noises.
I've since had a number of colonoscopies, and though I have fuzzy memories of acting in such a way that I must have been feeling pain, I do not actually recall the pain itself, thanks to the anesthesia. So, yeah, a general anesthesia seems unnecessary, but there definitely is intense pain and discomfort in the absence of anything at all.
@@William1w1 Where I live they normally don't sedate you for colonoscopy. I had to go trough huge ordeal just to get somebody to do it with sedation. So my first 3 were done without sedation but I got an anaesthetic shot during the third one which didn't help at all. Then I had one which was supposed to be under sedation - doctor promised me that I'll be totally asleep but I was conscious and in severe pain most of the time. The worst part was that I was just stoned enough that I was literally crying and screaming from pain and begging the doctor to stop. He didn't. After that I was too afraid to have another one for a while but I ended up having two more where the sedation was strong enough that it kept me asleep. I only woke up twice during both procedures from pain, I cried a bit and they gave me more of the sedation and I was back under in no time. But I remember waking up and remember feeling pain. My first colonoscopy was almost pain free but all others were terribly painful while I was awake. I'm about to have another one soon and definitely not without strong sedation. I have severe adhesions in my abdomen that cause the pain.
Oh and by the way: here the doctors and nurses encourage you to fart which might seem embarrassing but it can actually relieve at least some discomfort.
I had propofol, was good shit
Everone has the right to live and not be drugged.
Everyone has the right to live and not be drugged.
From what I've read, the more intelligent and rational-oriented someone is, the more likely they are to be hypnotized. It's the opposite of what you'd think, usually. Really interesting.
Pain receptors aren’t in the brain. It’s why brain surgery can be done on awake patients. Pain is perceived in the brain. Sites with more pain receptors are perceived as more painful. It’s why paper cuts on ones finger tips hurt & cutting ones face with a sharp razor blade hurts less.
Roxee57--actually, there are no such things as pain receptors...
A colonoscopy is easily tolerable without any anesthesia. You can have a bit of gas and air if it gets particularly painful from the air them put into colon.
As always, this episode was:

General anaesthetic for a colonoscopy seems a bit excessive really.
i must say, i am thoroughly unconvinced by all presentations by hypnosis, and i feel like Sams account of remembering that 76 was the year when he was 9 had much less to do with his induction and suggestibility, and more to do with his decent memory of "the year of '76" and how he was 9 years old at that time.
if i were personally given the same test, since i was born in 2000 exactly, i don't even have to think for a second about how old i was, though i do have to know the month in question to determine exactly when i turned 9 in 2009, because i was 8 for about half of the year.
these very same suggestions are how people come to believing in Mandela Effects, such as Berenstain being spelled BerenSTEIN, Fruit of the loom having a cornucopia, or the origin of the term, that Nelson Mandela was assassinated a long time ago.
i don't think there is much "power" in suggestions beyond stimulating a memory, but even then, i feel that it is incredibly prone to become an altered false memory in which you "remember" something which you truly don't remember, but rather "makes sense" as far as you're concerned, so you jump to the belief.
Ive experienced sleep paralysis and it's terrifying
Always sounded scary to me.
It’s happened to me too. When I was a small child it terrified me and the experience stuck with me into adulthood. It happened again a few years ago but wasn’t frightening(probably because I knew what it was).
sam talks in phrases
Thomas Edison had a diary describing "Mind 1" and "Mind 2". Basically every human has 2 minds having an internal dialog 24 / 7. I can feel they are there but maybe only some percentage of people are like that not 100% of humans. So maybe these are the kind of hypnotizable people. I think that when I am in a flow state of mind like when I'm playing video games or coding I'm just using "mind 2" and is like data is missing and I feel blissfulness. And also weed kinda get me in a similar state of mind :0
Maybe these are the archetype stuff and evolution created multiple types of brains, just like there are different types of vehicles (cars, planes, pickup trucks, etc...)
And of course "Mind 1" and "Mind 2" could be mind 1, mind 2, mind 1.1, mind 8.7, etc...
And different stimulants give you access to these minds, And also could change them :0
If anyone feel that this is true plz comment :0

There is no such thing as a pain signal actually Sam. There is nociception by somatosensory receptors who then transduct this perception into an electrical impulse to the central nervous system, but this perception does not equal pain per se.
