He is quality. So funny, so interesting. A complete one off. Love his knowledge and opinions on art too. I am reassured by how many people in the art world he really pissed off. An outsider. An absolute hoot.

I ve seen a ranking done by Sewell of the best works of sculpture in history,he put some british military sculptural monument as number 1. Above David,Apollo Belvedere,Laocoon and His Sons,Venus of Milo,Nike of Samothrace,The Thinker,Discobolus. Laughable really. Even if we consider sculptural monuments the Ara Pacis and Victor Emmanuel II monument in Rome are way superior to some obscure british stuff. Talk about jingoism...probably a cope strategy for the fact of british inferiority in the history of sculpture or painting

I don't remember when I first came across Brian Sewell but I was too young to appreciate just how funny he was.

His book, The Complete Outsider is a must read. Scurilous, an real hoot and vastly informative of the goings on in the art world.

Thank you! I discovered Brian Sewell just months after he died in 2015/16 and his Grand Tour inspired me to go and live in Florence one autumn. Have only seen some episodes on RUclips, I must buy the DVD! Love the interaction with the peacock. 🦚

Have got the dvd.,really good. An amazing moment when he compares a woman’s eyes to dark urine

I'm sure I recognise some of the exhibits as being from the Archaeological museum of Naples. I might be wrong though.
Brian was a treasure. Witty, amusing, and opinionated, but usually in a good way. A real character.

Yes, I wish I were the Cheshire Cat that could just fade away! How do I stop You? Brian Swell certainly had a dry wit, but at the same time had a great Knowledge of the Old Master Artists. He was certainly a character and a honest man. Not many about these days full of false mindless Celebrities. RIP Brian and not forgotten.

I'm so conflicted about the estimable Mr Sewell's passing. Of course it's sad he is no longer with us. Go back to 06:40 and see what he says about Victoria Beckham, just imagine what he would say about La Markle and the ludicrous and largely fake hypersensitivity of the 2020s? On the other hand I am quite glad he doesn't have to see us as we are now. Truly one of the great Stately Homos Of England, RIP. ❤

I don't have a copy of it but I heard it when it was broadcast: he astonished the Chairman of the UK Banger Racing Association (and me!) with his encyclopaedic knowledge of both drivers and car specs from White City banger racing meetings he attended in the 1950s, where he compared the smell of burning fuel to (imagine his voice) "the intoxicating odour of burnt gin..."
