Working with a friend (who had a lot more confidence than me) we stripped out the busted gearbox of a heavy old Holbrook lathe, to repair the reversing mechanism. It did not use many ball races, just bronze bearings all over the system. The solidified grease and oil was older than either of us. In order to do all this we had to remove the belt drive system, in it's heavy cast casing. That part alone was over 200Kg. We managed to fix the bodged up parts and get it all working again, as intended. It is still a good lathe with a taper turning attachment and reversing on the fly. It is amazing how solid and well made these old tools are. Once they are cleaned, with fresh bearings, they work like new.
As a fellow RUclips restoration content creator let me say...excellent camera work and editing as well! I know how much effort goes into that. I see good things ahead for your channel.

My friend had a workshop opposite a motor rewind company in Sheffield. Mostly working on big industrial motors from factories. So we regularly witnessed huge motors, some approaching 1000 Kg arriving, some burned out and being stripped and rebuilt It was fascinating. Being in Sheffield we had and used some very large buffing sets on stands in the polishing & grinding workshop; well away from Lathes and milling machines. It was a great place.

Hi Restoration Guy. Great video! If you add a line that says 0:00 Introduction to the start of your list of timestamps, the timestamps will show as true chapters within the video. Also moving those motor end bells involves moving the shaft within the bearing - so it makes it much easier to to clean the shafts as much as possible of rust before doing that. Cheers, Craig

just found the same grinder on ebay AEG DWS 200/800M (functional) for 380V, asking for 165 bucks would you buy it for that price and does it lose power when converting to 230V with capacitor? looking forward to your answer...great job on that restore
Difficult to assess I do not know the condition. But I paid for my € 20. Yes you lose a little bit of performance but I am completely satisfied with the reduced performance. Thanks a lot.
Subbing. There are a few things that I didn't enjoy and I leave here for you to consider: Using the vice to secure the screw, without any protection to not damage the treads. Not using a proper tool to remove the circlip and finally, the type of paint. If you had used hammerite metal paint the end result would have been awesome. And I guess you know this, you really need a sandblaster, even if just because of the mesmerizing effect that it makes when people watch something being sandblasted. :)
Thank you very much and thank you for your constructive criticism. Yes, because of the screws and the locking ring, I agree that I could have done better. I am also a fan of Hammerit. The problem is that they have a limited range of colors. Because of the sandblaster, I still have to see how I can organize it from the squareof my workshop is already pretty full, but yes, people love it and I think I will get one in the future because removing the paint is always annoying.
You might want to try a slightly higher Mfd run cap, that was very slow to start...almost didn't, I'd say try going with a 15 and if that's not enough go for a 20uf, toss an ampmeter on it to make sure its not over amping when it does get up to speed.

@@TheRestorationGuy Restore table on drill press and upload video on youtube)
also will be revew your drill press
Seems like you can never please people😂🤭 for all those who are tryna tell him he did it wrong i thought you did a great job and it works way better than it did and also looks way better
It really seems that way.
Very nice job!
Thanks
Is it true that AEG makes Ridgid power tools for home depot ?
How do you have a $50 bearing puller and not $8 snap ring pliers?
I have one unfortunately it didn't fit for the size.
I like the way of starting.....superb
This restoration is so peaceful that made me to subscribe..haha...keep this concept on...
Thanks a lot
Why'd you put the tool rest mounts in backwards?
Как-то не очень станочек стартует. При правильном подборе конденсатора и верном подключении запуск должен быть повеселее. Ну а так, ошибки в процессе присутствуют, но в целом пойдет ) За тиски лайк )
I like that, shades of The Really Random Channel. you got a new subscriber here.
Thank you
Nice. Please invest in a set of snap ring pliers too.
Awesome. Buy an impact driver. Great video
Thank you
think the kapisator ,is a bit to low kapasity..since, the engine is so slow to spool up..is it a 25 pf you have used
Well observed, you are right. The problem was that the rating plate lacked the necessary data to calculate the correct capacitor, so I had to guess.
Wow! Great work here! I wish I had one to restore and keep for my own use too😊 good to know another good new channel, will take as reference for my work too
Thanks a lot. I will also check your channel. I am always looking for restoration channels.
@@TheRestorationGuy nice to know you😊 all the best to you!
I feel like this is just one long commercial of Dewalt drills. Impressive work
what a means to clean the case . Thanks
no primer for that paint?
Ofc
I'm liking the restoration right up to the spray paint Dam is that not a good colour, it's a colour I associate with sewage.
About what year is this grinder. Sorry if I missed it.
I subbed just because of that awesome intro logo. Great video too.
Thanks a lot. You are the first to rate the intro. I thought the long hours of work would have been unnecessary.
Yeah, I like the intro too - restoring the logo, to start the video 👍
just found the same grinder on ebay AEG DWS 200/800M (functional) for 380V, asking for 165 bucks would you buy it for that price and does it lose power when converting to 230V with capacitor? looking forward to your answer...great job on that restore
Difficult to assess I do not know the condition. But I paid for my € 20. Yes you lose a little bit of performance but I am completely satisfied with the reduced performance. Thanks a lot.
Such a beautiful machine great work
Thank you, 🤣 that name kills me.
What color green is this.
Olive green
Ремонтировать старый механизм это достойно уважения для этого нужно много чего знать и много уметь.
Thanks for the hint. Have already exchanged it for a higher one. It starts up much faster now.
@@TheRestorationGuy Glad to hear it!
