    I think you hit the nail on the head: Scar just didn’t want anyone to be able to connect him to killing Simba.
    It’s also very interesting because as a kid I always thought Simba blamed himself because Mufasa was trying to save him, but as I get older, I think Simba assumed that practicing roaring started the stampede.

    • @nickreacts6394
      @nickreacts6394  2 года назад +69

      I missed that detail about Simba! I assumed he felt guilty about Mufasa trying to save him, but that adds a whole other layer if he thought he caused the stampede

    • @spaceshiplewis
      @spaceshiplewis 2 года назад +41

      Yep! That's why Scar made fun of his "little roar" so that if he had a chance to tell Zazu or anyone trying to rescue him he'll say that he roared and the wildebeests started the stampede.

    Something I want to touch on about Scar not killing Simba himself;
    1. Maybe Scar was worried that the lionesses would smell blood on Scar's person if he returned.
    2. In the first scene, Zazu asks "Didn't your mother tell you not to play with your food?" To me, that reveals that Scar enjoys mind games. He likes toying with his victims.
    Another aside about Simba and Nala pinning each other, usually to counter a pin, you kick and push them over you. Simba used that counter to defeat Scar.

A metapher that the animals do not need to speak when there is no conflict and only when there is someone bringing schemes (a mostly human quality) into the pride there is also need to speak like humans. Then I bought the soundtrack (on CD lol!) and jammed to that for months! I really enjoyed your deep dive in the character motivations, and I would have to agree with you I think on the points. I think its super interesting the changes in Simba. He goes from a cocky little kid thinking he's the best and life will be a cake walk to a very cautious individual that's scared of confrontation (not only with Scar and Pride Rock, but with himself and the ghost of his father). Its such a great coming-of-age story in that way.

    "Until sunrise, he is your son." Well, obviously. I mean, Mufasa is king of "everything the light touches", so...
    Also, another very cool detail is their claws. Yes, Scar seems unsettling, even with his "touching" moments with Simba. Ya know how you feel uncomfortable watching him ruffle Simbas head? There is a reason for it, and not only because you know he is the vilian.
    Lions, like most cats, have retractable claws. You see it in this movie too - they have the out only when they need them, for climbing, fighting or just making a point.
    Good example is in the song I can´t wait to be king, more presicely the sequence where Simba sings "I´m brushing up on looking down and working on my roar!" There you see him climb a fallen log and jump at Zazu. But if you watch closely, you see he has his claws out when he is climbing the log, but as soon as he jumps at Zazu, his claws retract. It helps to show that he doesn´t realy want to hurt Zazu. Mess with him and scare him a little? Yes. Truly hurt him? No.
    But then you watch Scar - he has his claws out during the whole movie. That´s why he seems so unsetling even in "familial" moments, like above mentioned ruffling Simbas head. And it also helps to ilustrate his intentions.
    And you may notice, just before the song I can´t wait to be king starts and Zazu talks about how Simba and Nala are in love, you can hear "Can you feel the love tonight" in the background.

    I remember seeing this movie in theaters when I was 7 yrs old very vividly, it was only 6 months after my dad had died so it hit kinda hard when Mufasa died. But literally all the kids were crying in the theater on that part and many of the adults as well. I remember the opening very clearly too because it was such an epic scene with the song, it swelled in your chest and made your heart feel full but excited when the drums hit with the title card my heart was pounding lol. I was wondering if you watched this on Disney Plus or not. I heard they added the song "morning report" into the disney plus version that wasn't in the original theatrical release and that you couldn't watch the original theatrical version anymore unless you had previously released version on dvd/blu ray etc. Not sure if that is true because I don't have Disney plus myself but that's a bit sad to me, I know it was originally written for the movie but was cut for theatrical release and I completely understand releasing an extended cut version having it added back in as an option but not having the option to view the original theatrically released version on their streaming service or unless you have an older dvd is kinda sad to me in a way because you don't get to experience the movie exactly the way the audiences experienced it when the movie came out. But I've been hearing Disney have been doing a lot of things like that with Disney Plus like one of my favorite Christmas movies is "A Muppet Christmas Carol" but Disney decided for Disney Plus and future dvd releases they would cut the song "The Love is Gone" from the original movie because "kids might think it's boring" but I loved it as a kid and literally wore out my vhs tape re-watching that movie every Christmas. That and the story loses it's impact and makes a little less since when you omit the song especially when you consider the later song that is sung is "The Love we Found" which is a reprise of the previous song. I read an article that Ben Henson (Jim Henson's son) was trying to get them to add the song back into the movie and that they were trying to make that happen but that was last year and I haven't heard anything about it since then.

    Scar's song wasn't sung by Jeremy Irons, apparently he had lost his voice and they had to get someone else to sing it. That person was Jim Cummings who is most known for being Winnie the Pooh and Tigger.

    The live action movie is a wonderful piece of art in it's own right. Lion king inspired my love of lions. My favorite animal. To see them as the beautiful creatures they are carrying out the movie is something of value to me. I understand not everyone else has such value in their mindset when they watch; but if you love animals it's an amazing feat, nonetheless. Yes, it lacks some scenes from the animated version. Does that mean it deserves to be cast to side simply because it failed to be a copy and paste version of the original? Not really. It's a rendition. I would highly recommend it, and I know I'm not alone in this. A minority, perhaps. Supposedly so are those who love the movie Thor: Love and Thunder. At the end of the day many people put time and effort into the craft and there's always something positive to be taken away from art.

      It was especially amazing when I saw the IMAX-Version of it. One thing i was disappointed in was that Scar dosn't look as sexy as in the old movie. I still thing they could have given him a darker maine since there are lions with darker maines. On the other hand the scene when Rafiki discovers that Simba is still alive is just amazingly beautiful.

    7:50 - that's why the live action Lion King is a pretty big disappointment. Real looking lions do not have facial expressions like people or like drawn cartoons so you can't pass along big enough range of emotions. Why that wasn't figured out in the first week of making, I don't know.

Scar is my favorite Disney villain so I might be biased but I think his song is the best villain song. I was very fortunate to have the chance to see the Broadway show on tour for my birthday a few years ago. I had an aisle seat so when the animals came down in the beginning and when Simba runs away, they all went right by me! There is some great behind the scenes stuff for this film, I recommend tracking it down if you're into that stuff.

It hits so close to home for me, in 2016 my dad had a seizure while sleeping and hit his head on his end table, it gave him brain damage so they put him on life support. Days I spent at the hospital begging him to wake up, we had to go home and watch his favorite show, he had another seizure when that happened so they pulled the plug. Seeing dad die Infront of me ruined me. But yeah when Simba's saying to his dad "we gotta go, get up. Dad we have to go home". Fucking gut wrenching...and just like Simba, I couldn't leave him.
