Renault’s humble 8 saloon car needed some “je ne sais quoi”, so Renault handed it to racing driver and engineer, Amédée Gordini and told him to “make it fast”. He responded with a more powerful engine, twin-rear shock absorbers, uprated suspension and a raft of other changes to create what was coined the Renault 8 Gordini, a pocket rocket that won three Tour De Corse rally events, showed up more expensive rivals like the Lancia Fulvia and cemented Renault’s reputation as a force to be reckoned with. Joe took a late South-African import Gordini for a drive on the road, to see how it holds up today…
Thanks to John for lending us his incredible 8 Gordini

It’s so sad seeing so many esteemed car manufacturers selling their souls to the SUV devil. Wonderful to see and hear the 8 Gordini again 👏

Agree completely. Boring to the 11th degree. I'd rather have a station wagon from the 60s or 70s than a modern SUV.

When I was a little kid my mother used to have a "normal" R8 but with a buffed engine, larger tires AND the Gordini front lights. Bordeaux paint with a white line, beautiful car. I was born by the Pyrenees, and my mum has crazy story about how that car could handle the tricky passes the Pyrenees can sometimes confront you with. With a couple of friends, she even went from Bayonne to Paris in this car during May 1968. And at night those front lights were like "Get out suckers here comes the Queen" :D
Used to be the very first car that was bringing me to school every morning, alongside my sister and of course my teacher mum, until she sold it and got a calmer BUT also extremely enduring and reliable green R5. Loved that one too. Cheers!

I love the R 8 cars. My great grandmother bought one in 1964 and I LOVED that car. Unfortunately, it had that automatic transmission with a governor. The trans gave out and I tried to get a manual to swap out, but while I found the parts and underneath the floor mats you could see the extra plates to install a clutch pedal and gear shifter, I didn't have the skills to do the work and the garage who said they could do it lied. So my Dad eventually sold it. But I would love to have a standard 8 or Gordini. Wonderful car to drive.

    Fabulous car.
One of our Family's Friend owned one.
As a kid, it was quite scary to be inside that rocket -- however, he never crashed.
Neverthless, the engine roaring and the vehicle literally flying through regular roads or mountain trails represent moments that deserve to be remembered.
Thank you for a fantastic video.

Back in the day, Renault also did the R4 and the R16 and yes the badge meant something. I have a soft spot for the R10 (an update of the R8).

Nice vid and car for sure. This has been one of my dreams car when I was younger with the R12 Gordini, the Simca 1000 Rallye 1 & 2, the Alpine A110… Loved to see your enthusiastic smile and all the comments as well from people who have such a passion for cars. Brit's camping and parking place at Le Mans 24 Hours is a must to visit. On my side I'min love with your TVR car. By the way I'm an old french car and racing car lover. Thanks again for that cool vid. Cheers all

What a fabbo thing! Despite the Renault 8 being also assembled here in Au and the Gordini raced in the Australian Rally Championship, Touring Car Championship, Rallycross Championship and Bathurst 1000 I cant say I've ever seen one let alone even knew they even existed.

I worked for a Renault dealer in the 70s. The R10 had the same gear link and even when it was new, it was not good. After a lot of miles, finding the right gear felt like a matter of chance.

  • @Rammstein56

The Gordini was available in blue and white only.
There was also a tamer R8S, with an upgraded 1100 Cléon Fonte engine and a 4 speed gearbox., the main colours for the S were bright yellow, dark green white and maroon.
A lot of R8S have been killed as it was a much cheaper alternative for boy-racers but another lot have been Gordinized by changing the power plant. An R8S does not have the chrome side strips nor the chroem surrounds over the rear license plate but it does have a dashboard with the beautiful Jaeger gauges.
The loacal Spanish Renault plant called Fasa Renault, made its own Gordini for the local marked called the TS, these had 4 pieces of 5.3/4" headlights and also a tuned 1100 Cléon Fonte engine. And th eMexicans also made a hotter Renault R8.

Renault and in fact all manufacturers should stop analysing stupid market research and start making cars again and not soulless SUV’s. Steve Jobs once said… “ give people something they don’t know that they need”, wise words. I think a couple of months of the general public not buying any new cars will soon make them sit up and listen.

I would love to try any R8 or Dauphine. The Gordini really is the best of what a rear engined four door saloon car can be.
Renault seem to be about to fall into the same trap as Ford by redirecting names of past models in the form of an SUV, such as the next generation Espace.
Thank goodness for their rich back catalogue.

Why not just get yourself a Renault 4, 1.4TL, stick some hub extensions on it, a nitrous kit, and there you have it, a family sh!tbox runabout, snapping at the heels of a Porsche 911 GT3!
Don't forget your Wellington's for those annoying puddles that you may have to drive through though, you don't want to ruin any designer footwear.
