As a former personal trainer, I found that putting the onus of SMART on the client is counter productive. SMART is something a trainer or coach should use as a framework when assessing others, not for the client to use on themselves. Unless that person is highly self critical the pressure of implementing SMART goals by themselves will often lead to burnout.
