This was a horrible contract for the Packers and it will ruin the franchise for many years to come. Love is an average, not great quarterback, and it makes zero sense to throw MVP like money at a quarterback like that. They could literally sign Jake Browning of the Bengals for dirt cheap and get the same level of production. It will be very hard for the Packers to sign free agents now that their salary cap is shot. The Packers will be a mediocre team for the next decade. Gutekunst is borderline criminal for how he mismanaged the greatest franchise in NFL history and he needs to be fired.

Not everyone is CJ Stroud or Mahomes or Herbert (since he also broke records in his rookie year) or Brady (that's obvious though) Penix has the blocks bit his structure needs some building who better to learn from if not Brady or Brees etc. Cousins kept the Vikings competitive in that division for a while. And Vikings have no-one set up. They're relying on journeymen and a rookie. I don't like their chances. Green Bay uses a smart model. So smart move by the Falcons.

Since the start of the rookie wage scale in 2011, the only teams that have actually been successful following this "strategy" are the 2017 Eagles who drafted Carson Wentz (but won the SB with Foles) and the 2019 Chiefs.

Packer fan here. I think the Packers should have traded Rodgers to Denver, taken a lot of draft picks and a couple players, and put Love in as QB. I thought this at the time, and also thought that the team might well have a couple of down years while Love adapted to the speed and complexities of defenses in the NFL. Instead, the team paid Rodgers a lot, and although they won a lot of games, it was his absolute belief in (a) going for big chunks rather than just moving the chains, and (b) look for Davante Adams first. If he's only double covered, throw it his way anyway. Another receiver was open by three yards? Adams get the ball thrown to him anyway. And rookies? They had cooties, as far as Rodgers was concerned.

More like, "The Green Bay Packers Did the Predictable". Of course they were going to pay Love, what other options do they have? While it is 100% true that he only played at the top level about 3/4 of one season, GB has been evaluating him for 4+ years. They just wanted to see if the potential that they saw in camp would translate to the field - and it seems like they've seen enough. Personally, I don't think we've seen enough to warrant him earning top QB money - but I'm obviously not paid to evaluate NFL talent. It'll be interesting to see if his play falls back down to earth now that opposing teams have actual game film on him - as he was essentially an unknown last season. Regardless, this was the move to make. I'd be pretty surprised if Love turns out to be total bum from this point forward. If you don't think that the Packers currently have the best chance to win with Love at the helm, you don't know ball. All this coming from a Bears fan who would like nothing more than for GB to suck.

But it's the mid season turn around that really seals it, Lafleur turned over more of the offense to Love, getting him more involved in the play selections and audibles and this is what opened up the offense and let the team go on that second half tear right into the divisional round (where they'd have gone to the NFCCG if special teams didn't suck a**, yes Love threw the INT but it was missed kicks that put them there in the first place, a problem that cost them Ws in the regular season).

If the cowboys pay dak HE will be paid at least 55 million a year an be the highest paid QB. All I'm gonna say is this, in 4 years when the next rookie class is up for extended contracts you will see them making 60-70 million a year!! This has to stop because it will handcuff teams in the future. Pretty soon (if they don't stop this) QBs will be making 80,90 million a year and that will DESTROY nfl organizations. Huge Packer fan, happy to see Love succeed but that contract was too much. Yes, pay QB’s early, but the Packers should have given him $40 mil over 5 years, with either big guaranteed money up front or the option to negotiate the contract at year 3. This would give them a couple more years to see while still paying him. The fact that Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen are making less and Joe Burrow is sitting closely behind is insane.
The real winner here might be Love’s agent…lol
