  • 👉Join Stubbs to learn everything we know so far about the new Retroid Pocket 4 & 4 Pro. Rocking a Mediatek Dimensity D900 on the non Pro, and a new variant, the D1100 on the Pro model. This now competes directly with the Odin Lite, Odin Base & Pro, GPD XP Plus, and AYANEO Pocket Air! Retroid is entering the mid to high end Android space, and its pretty cool to see. The D1100 goes neck and neck with the Snapdragon 865, and slightly less performant than the 870.

I don't have an Odin 2 yet and now it's going to be a really tough choice between the Odin 2 and Retroid Pocket 4 Pro for my GameCube and PS2 needs. I do really like having the D-pad up top for general use retro gaming and the small pocketable form factor of the RP4, but I also appreciate the Odin 2's big 6" screen and that it's got enough power to play pretty much every GameCube and PS2 game full speed at 2x resolution with no issues. Based on the benchmark scores of the D110 in the RP4 Pro it should have relatively the same performance as the Aya Neo Pocket Air, meaning that 95% of GameCube and PS2 games should play fine at 2x resolution without any tinkering beyond swapping between OpenGL or Vulcan for the backend on a game by game basis, but some of the very top end games may struggle a bit and have to be bumped down to 1.5x for full speed gameplay. Decisions decisions.

My take on Retroid Pocket 4/Pro is that they are unnecessary for my use case to upgrade from my RP3+. Reason being the 4/4 Pro realistically only adds more PS2, Gamecube and later systems' titles which i have the Steam Deck for. I only really bought the RP3+ for the truly retro titles up to the PSP. Maybe the bump in performance on the 4 can get higher resolution scaling, but i cant justify getting a 4 when i have the 3+.
It's really fantastic though, that RP4 starts at $150, which is where RP3+ also was at on release.

I'm very sensitive to input lag, so it's a deal breaker for me. You can use run-ahead on Retroarch games to somewhat fix it, but you can't do this for more advanced games. Obviously the lag would be the most harmful for competitive Android games, which I would also want to play sometimes. For the Pro which is 8GB of ram, you have barely just enough ram to actually use Yuzu, but not enough to play any of the higher-end games. I’d say just get the Odin 2 Pro/Max since they have 12 and 16GB of ram respectively, but at that point for $459 you’d be better off getting a Steam Deck.

"proper" placement of the buttons is what will probably decide my purchase of the RP4pro. I was happy that the KTR1 gave you the option but, it's price and somewhat disappointing performance hurt it for me. Even if I'm not playing really old or retro style 2D titles, I find it's just more comfortable if the analogs are below the Dpad and face buttons, period.

RP2S form with RP4P internals would be a must purchase. Widescreen only makes sense for PSP and some Android games but the majority of the games people will want to play are 4:3. Not sure why they do widescreen.

I got the metal RP3+ just a few weeks ago. Since I already own a Wii/GCN and an N64, I don't need the upgrade. Plus, this version won't come in a metal shell, and that is a huge difference in quality. Retroid uses crappy plastic to keep costs down, so if you want the metal upgrade you won't be able to get it because the metal shell is also sold out and designed only for the RP3+ button placement. Believe me the metal shell makes a huge difference. Also, the screens are the same so that wasn't even improved😂

Speakers: it's a shame they're not front firing. I would have liked to see a layout similar to the Odin 2 for select/start and home/back buttons. In addition, over the RP2S this would be less pocketable and larger (in my use case this is a issue): I would have loved a smaller device with a 3:2 screen. Even if the Pro can achieve the performance I am looking for, I'll pass and I'll rather stay with my RP2S 😊 I am not a reviewer, and there's no need for common users to have tons of these devices: I prefer having just one, and this is still my 2S.

I think that after 2 identical devices in rp3 and +. £200 dollars for me i prefer to stick some more on it and get an odin 2. Oh come on lol, given the resolution of the device, the size of the device, that's overkill for a Retro handheld, Retroid tends to focus more on the lower end, I could only imagine the price point they'd have to make it for a SD Gen 1, let alone having the battery capacity.
