Don't use anything abrasive on your valves to clean them, valves are plated and if you lose this plating air will go around the valve instead of through the ports.
the best way to clean your valves is to use some kettle descaler in boiling water (Only put stripped down valves in), fill a small jug with the descaler and hot water then drop in your valves once you have removed the buttons, guides and felts.
You will see them fizz as the descaler tackles the built up scale on the valves. after 20 minutes or so simply use a small mouthpiece brush on the valves and you will be left with valves that look brand new and no longer stick.
Be sure to rinse in clean water before putting back in the instrument ;)
P.S. Don't use this method on anything that has a laquer finish as boiling water can remove your lacquer!

Thank you, I ran out of valve oil and needed other options. I just pressed down my first valve and took out the slide

NEVER use pliers or steel wool on your horn unless you want to ruin it.

NO NO NO NO many horrible things wrong with this video. as a professional band instrument technician for 38 years........this upsets me very much. 1-please DO NOT at any point use steel wool or any kind abrasives to clean valves. Lapping and honening or any kind of polishing should be done by a professional. 2-please never use pliers on any part of the horn. Repair shops have special tools to remove stuck or seized caps or slides.

I was thinking the same thing. I clean my valves with an old SOFT toothbrush and Dawn dish soap. NEVER use any abrasives, and NEVER use pliers. Well, I have soft-jaw pliers for this, but I actually bought them for another non-music related purposes. I took a 20 year break from trumpet and when I pulled my trumpet out of storage, the valves moved great. The instrument was cleaned and heavily oiled before being stored. I cleaned it using Dawn, warm water, a valve brush, a snake cleaner and that old toothbrush, replace the cork and all was gold, or should I say silver. Her other videos also recommend steel wool. No way I'm letting that near my instruments UNLESS I'm cleaning corroded terminals on electronics.
