this is all so very true. If you eat vegan, almost without exception, you will lose some weight. Depending on your specific choices and exercise level, it might not be a lot, but everyone I know who went full vegan lost some weight, often lots.
Very true! I've maintained a 25-lb. weight loss for 4.5 years after going vegan...but, as I don't restrict vegan junk food and don't exercise consistently, I still have another 25 lbs to lose.
Vegan Flo that's great! I also still eat some bad things like potatoe chips and other processed things that are vegan. If you can at least manage to bring your sodium level down and fiber level up and lots of vitC then even with junk you should lose some more. Oh and despite what you may have heard, coffee/tea is good for you, WITH the caffiene so drink up!
i ended up losing over 38 lbs within 3 months thanks to the starch solution! it was easier than most people think. the workouts itself were the hardest part lol
From my personal experience, it's super easy to maintain great health and have a great figure while eating a lot of whole foods and cutting out processed foods. However, losing weight is a different situation. If you're massively overweight/obese and have been eating tons of fatty junk food then yes, the first 20-40 pounds will drop off quickly. But for someone who's very close to their ideal weight (say 15-20 pounds to lose), weight loss is very slow and sometimes takes months to happen unless there is a caloric deficit or exercice or appetite supressants. Add to that, especially for women, with more and more likelihood of hormonal imbalances and pcos, weight loss becomes a herculean task. The upside is, if you're patient, you can lose the same weight eating tons of good food and enjoying satiation and great health benefits, in the same time period as you would if you restricted drastically. Plus, it's obviously easier to maintain your food habits and just enjoy a good relationship with food.
that part about "thick people" who got that because of winning the natural selection lottery on long journeys is interesting, esp. as it relates to black people in the americas. the people who survived the middle passage probably had that extra fat or thickness that helped with survival. and that's why the modern diet plays much more negatively into the poor health of so many black americans. interesting.
I have a question about the calories per pound equation. is it calories per pound after preparation? Beans specifically: 1lb of dry beans is significantly different than 1lb of cooked beans... I'm gathering that this rule-of-thumb is for just before it goes in the mouth..
+Keri Marion Its both. The left part of the scale is about unprocessed veggies, legumes, etc. If you look to the left of the scale you'll see "grains" and at about 1700 kcal you'll read "bread". Although bread consists of grains ...
Off topic but does anyone know what to do if you have a fructose intolerance on a vegan lifestyle? I sometimes feel really bad after eating fruit and Im really skinny atm idk if that has to do with that but I would like to gain some weight and to feel better. Does anyone have experience with fructose intolerance and could even treat it? This is not a comment against veganism I love the vegan lifestyle and I could never go back to eating animal products.
well, you can be healthy without eating fruit no problem, eat a ton of grains, legumes, leafy vegetables etc. i dont see it as a problem. also you should increase the amount of calories youre eating if you consider yourself very skinny. being too skinny is unhealthy, just like being overweight is unhealthy.
There are some vegans who say they can eat 10 bananas a day and font gain weight? They say that eat 3000 calories a day. I think the body doesn't store raw food as fat.
What he said ... Until you lose the oils, even high caloric refined foods and nuts seeds avocados...until you get down to the weight you'd like to be...you may not lose weight
+ Carry Li ... what they said... there's lots of unhealthy 'vegan' foods. The point Dr. made about what order to eat might be a help...salad, then veggies, then carbs. Chef AJ does a lot about losing weight, she was a self-described 'fat vegan' but got rid of several different elements in her diet. Now she's a skinny vegan! She has her own youtube channel. Be well! : )
Yes you too can go on a low protein diet and lose all that dangerous muscle tissue. Dropping muscle weight can be done quickly and easily on the McDougall diet.
If I may ask your background and if you understand the research looking at positive vs. negative nitrogen retention in studies? There's more personally I did the diet and had DEXA as well as working with vegans that are athletic whom are on a planned diet. It is my experience as well as what you'll find is that the diet cause a nitrogen loss and the primary loss is from muscle tissue. Go do a pubmed and if you are not familiar with the terminology then learn it. The big issue for the layperson is that they falsely assume that they can teach themselves everything. If you work with individuals you can prove this quickly with a DEXA before and after. You'll quickly see that the person loses muscle tissue and that this lowers their basal metabolic rate. There's so many more problems with the diet. Which is why it has less credibility than ever.
***** Although that studies discusses mechanisms of protein synthesis, it is not what I was discussing. Continue your search and learn, I mean that with the best of intentions. You can certainly self educate and I commend that but without knowing what you need to know then you are simply blinded and rather bias. Hint: also look at Journals in Clinical and Sports Nutrition. Your post is somewhat ironic though I do recognize your position. The thing which I believe here is the underlying attempt to see if you can discredit what I am saying. I am speak here on facts, the diet is terribly problematic. My Point (let me be emphatic): The mcdougall diet causes muscle atrophy and nitrogen loss, decreases muscular protein synthesis. Further this is accelerated in those that perform strenuous exercise. Please note I use DEXA scans and actually work with athletic populations. There are some studies out there. But find a person willing and do it yourself if you are really interested. It's cheap enough. The truth is much more complex then what I can write in a youtube note and I'm not wanting to be argumentative but I am going to now switch off notifications because I could provide links and have done in the past to "win" arguments but once done, there's no reward, no acknowledgement, no nothing. So why bother when you are so convinced and don't ask questions or know how to look or even understand. It all takes time and conviction. From Carnosine, Zinc, B12, Chromium etc. etc. go learn. And it's a warning.... the diet is a catabolic one.
+Veganimal Ok now you are being straight out obnoxious and calling me dishonest. Also my evidence is empirical not anecdotal, do you even know the difference? And yes I've just muted the post.
+k8cirque If you are talking about vegan bodybuilders, they're not on a low protein diet, far from it. Further we can only assume they're vegan, do you really know that they don't take animal based foods e.g. whey. They also require LOTS of supplements, far from "natural". I'm talking about the McDougall diet, which they aren't even on. Lastly, drugs. Are these guys taking androgenic-anabolic substances? People like Carl Lewis whom McDougall still touts as one of his successes even after being found out to be a drug user and cheat. The truth is Lewis is a liar and McDougall should have distanced himself but he did the opposite. I wouldn't class your bodybuilders as being natural and would question if they are really vegan. There's lots of money and fame to be had by saying your vegan or else you'd be another face out there.
FINALLY THE ANSWER!!! It all makes so much sense and the deliver was excellent. Thank you Dr. Lisle & the McDougall webinar team!

I would like an Art Is My Life t-shirt.
Sounds like the casually explained guy. Funny, dead pan delivery.. I like it.

First comment- Awesome. And video awesome as usual. Thanks for posting it. Keep up the amazingly good work!!
That's great but why do people lose weight on a high fat low carb diet? I did and I ate massive calories and no sugar?
that part about "thick people" who got that because of winning the natural selection lottery on long journeys is interesting, esp. as it relates to black people in the americas. the people who survived the middle passage probably had that extra fat or thickness that helped with survival. and that's why the modern diet plays much more negatively into the poor health of so many black americans. interesting.
Awesome
After reviewing the comments below, some people still missed Dr Lisle's points completely! 😐
hahah...she's so formal w/ her hands behind her!
Omg the drawings XD
He got it right
LOL....@ 13:33..who stepped on your cat Dr Lisle?

My new years resolution to get back in shape is still alive and well. On the 3rd month of p90x.

I'm eating a vegan diet for many years and I'm still not losing weight.
vegan diet doesn't automatically make u lose weight. gotta be whole foods low fat plant based
What he said ... Until you lose the oils, even high caloric refined foods and nuts seeds avocados...until you get down to the weight you'd like to be...you may not lose weight

This is a little dry with touches of humor, especially the drawings. Good info, though. I recommend.
You shouldn't be demonizing bread as not all bread is created equal.
