I'm all about security and I just recently gave apple keychain permission to store my login password for my NAS. As an added security measure I encrypted my "personal" folder just in case some bad actor COULD somehow gain access to my NAS and all the other shared folders within. It's good to see that synology offers some sort of password protection within the DSM, but it seems kind of pointless to have to plug in a usb every time. I would just as soon keep a list of my passwords not already stored in my key chain on a pdf. doc and store that on a usb for retieval if I ever forget them. Still good to know how to set up the key manager on the NAS.
Thank you for watching.
From my viewpoint the key manager is useful in the follow circumstances.
1. Encrypted folders - When the system reboots the encrypted folders can be re-mounted without having to log back into the device.
2. Physical Security - If you are in a high security scenario then the key can be used to mount the volumes and then removed. So in the event where the Synology device is stolen the data can't be read.
I just set it up because i started to rely more on automatic updates and I thought it would be useful content.
