What Happened to the 4 QBs Drafted Before Jalen Hurts?

  • Jalen Hurts, a standout quarterback, faced setbacks early in his career despite impressive performances at the University of Alabama. 4 QBs were drafted ahead of him. He was benched during a crucial game, which led him to transfer to Oklahoma and prove himself. In the 2020 NFL Draft, four quarterbacks were chosen ahead of him. Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert, and Jordan Love were all selected before Hurts. However, since then, Hurts has shown exceptional talent, leading his team to the Super Bowl in just his third year. Many teams passed on him, opting for other positions, but the Philadelphia Eagles eventually selected him, and he has proven to be a game-changer, now regarded as one of the best quarterbacks in the league. His rise to stardom was unexpected, but he has demonstrated his abilities and surpassed all expectations.

Why is this an issue? I’m not a huge college football fan so you can explain in detail. To me he, needed to prove himself as a quality future NFL QB and he couldn’t do that sitting on the bench at Alabama. The transfer makes sense in that perspective.

I'd like to mention that Hurts graduated from Alabama in his third year and then enrolled at Oklahoma for post-graduate work. Somehow to me that's different than simply transferring to another college to play football because you're no longer the starter. I am happy for Hurts because of the way he handled the situation at Alabama; he didn't whine or complain or threaten. Lots of people doubted whether he could really be a passing threat in the NFL, but he has proven them wrong. Well, for the most part.

Same. After watching his rookie year his breakout was not unexpected by me. Put some weapons behind him and I had full confidence last year (with receipts of all the over stats I took on hurts and eagles wins going into last year). His trajectory was really exactly what I expected. 2021 I was fully sold he led us to the playoffs with really only a rookie WR as his top option.
If he was a top 5 draft pick we woulda never been looking at Watson and Wilson. Kinda proves for how good roseman is it’s still really hard to identify ascending QB talent. He knew we had a SB roster and while I was on board with Hurts, I could see the argument to go with Wilson, but that’s only if Wilson and Hurts were swapped out evenly, which clearly wasn’t the case. What nightmare that would have been. Imagine Hurts on the Seahawks plus not having Nolan smith (maybe Jalen Carter too) and our next two first round picks. We’d still be in OK shape which is crazy because I think Wilson doesn’t flame out here and as long as we hit on our next QB we’d still be contending in the nfc the next few years.

A number 2 QB is rated 7th most valuable player on the Eagles (if I recall that stat correctly, it's something like that), and Nick Foles provedit. It's because Philly demands a lot from their athletes because they love their teams. Once you prove yourself these fans will worship you like a god. Just look at how Nick Foles is seen in comparison to McNabb. McNabb is definitely the more tenured player, with much higher talent but he just couldn't get us over the hump and so while he is indeed a great QB for the Eagles he doesn't have those few moments of greatness that Foles achieved. Even Cunningham who never won a Superbowl is more highly regardless in Philadelphia mythos than McNabb despite McNabb having more success in his time playing for the Eagles.

Only down year Hurts had in college was 2017 when Brian Daboll was his OC/qb coach. Hurts returned the favor in 2022/2023, lighting his Giants up in a three game sweep. Tua had bigger numbers and came into a championship game having no tape on him and being a different type of qb than Hurts. Also, played with nothing to lose. Since then he lost every big game he was in and lost the 2018/2019 champ game by 30+ points. Bama was losing in the 2018 sec championship game before Hurts came in and won it. Outside of Burrow, the other three were statistical wonders

@jacobstrouble6631 if I need to explain why coaching matters.. I don't know what to tell you. While I love his mentality and the dawg in him... I don't think he'd be the same as if he landed on the chargers.... Raiders... Commanders... Jets... Panthers... Texans... the list of disfunctional organizations that would have made him worse is long.
With the chargers... He'd be on his third OC, second head coach. Steichen would have made him look better his rookie year because he was there his rookie year... but Lombardi would be an awful OC for Hurts style.
I didn't say he couldn't end up in multiple places and do pretty good... as an example he might have ended up on san Fran and he'd be good... but I don't think he could do what Burrow has done for the Bengals...
They mentioned Carr and him going to the Raiders... and I just think that it seems obvious that would have been bad for his career...
Overall, where you go matters for 95% of QBs... very few QBs are the pillars you can build around even with bad coaching.... Hurts needed a system tailored to him and what he does. I don't think I feel the same about say a Mahomes... he is definitely better because Reid but as an example he is mobile and a great pocket passer... Hurts needs the perfect system for him as most guys do... and steichen was a great mind for him.

He is a tough minded player. Few egos could have handled all of his ups and downs. Hurts has been a great team player all along. Good to see him find success. Philly was a perfect fit for him. He is a good man, defensive schemes still don’t plan for running QB’s.

Hurts is a playmaker and a winner. Pretty wild that the '17 and '18 drafts produced the same amount of QB as 2020, and a lot of busts. Mahomes, Allen, Watson and Lamar..... but also Mayfield, Darnold, Rosen and Trubisky.

Im glad hes my qb and he just keeps getting better and we'll see this season if he can repeat it all back.

right? I just loved how athletic and dominant of a runner he was. You knew the throwing could probably improve, which it did, as well as the pocket presence, and now he’s a top 5 QB.

As a Bama fan, I loved hurts but his sophomore season was painful to go through. He played well against weaker defenses but struggled against stronger opponents. Tua played awesome but was way more of a risk taker than Jalen was. In the 2019 NCG, Tua got played by Clemson constantly. 2019 Tua was hurt several times and still gave LSU a run for their money.

It looked like Wentz was gonna be that long-term franchise guy at one point. I'm not sold on Hurts he's had one good season, and if he ever loses his mobility I don't think his arm will make up the difference. He got his bag. Let's see if he ends up being worth it or if the contract turns into an anchor.

True but he also was drafted with the intent to be a backup and had to overcome that and beat out the franchise Qb the eagles invested a ton in. Pays off now because he’s got a great situation but Hurts deserves credit for where the eagles are now.
