Good morning everyone. TGIF. It’s been a long week of puppy training...but I did managed to bind several quilts to make this weeks video. Machine binding is perfect for those fast finishes. So grab your coffee and enjoy
Great video! Will definitely use these suggestions. In your follow up videos would be great to hear why you still hand sew the back on “special” quilts - is it the look, do you trust it to hold better?
Binding is my biggest nemesis! We have a ' hate, hate' relationship 🤣 thank you for taking the time to produce this series. Hopefully we can change it to a 'mildly dislike' relationship ;)
Kristy Deen, "Binding is my nemesis" is my saying LOL watch the video's that she has on it. Go slow. Make the binding tool that she has and I promise you, it will help. I hated binding and because of that, I couldn't finish anything. Then I watched the videos. I made the tool. I watched the video on how to use the tool while binding and I paused and went very slowly and it really did work. Hang in there!!!
Practice practice practice! "How long does it take to NOT hate the janky way the back looks?" she asked, drying the angry tears on the back of the new quilt before going to inspect the perfection of her childhood quilt. THAT answered a LOT of questions. The quilt I had been holding my work up to all this time, HAS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT EDGE FINISH!!!! My childhood quilt has the back folded around the edge and it is sewn on the front with a scant quarter inch top stitch on the quilt top side!!! Wow! I was today years old. Okay, I will stop crying now -- at least about this. I thought I knew how my old quilt was finished, only to realize I only remembered from touch! I never actually studied it!
I just love your videos! They are just the right mix of informative, instructive and encouraging! Thanks so much because by the time you plan, film, and edit, I'm sure a large amount of time and effort goes into this. We truly appreciate it!
Could you do a video of single binding (1 1/2 - 1 1/4 inch) binding? For placemats and mug rugs I find the double binding a little too lumpy. And maybe the faux flange binding? and what about the "wrap-the-back-over-and-make-it-look-like-a-binding" binding? I know there are other youtube videos out there, but I think your instructional videos are probably the best! Clear, pedagogical and fun without fuzz or boring moments. Even funny :-)
My sister-in-law lives thousands of kilometres away from me in Australia 🇦🇺 yet I felt so close to her tonight when I text her for some advice as I’m a beginner quilter and she told me about an awesome lady on RUclips I need to check out, out of all the many quilters on RUclips she watches my favourite lady too! I love how I feel I’m being taught one on one by you. Thank you.
Yay I am so happy that you addressed this subject! I have been given the fish eye by more than one quilting purist because I bind with my machine. My quilts are used daily and washed and used and loved. They hold up fantastically and I love the look of binding method three. Thank you Karen as always you show that there is more than one way to do things and that is okay! Love to the puppy. ❤️ stay safe everyone, love from Australia 🇦🇺
Thanks Karen for putting all 3 methods in one video. I’m left-handed and my hand stitching looks terrible. No matter how much practice, it has never gotten even a little bit better, so I never hand stitch the binding on or anything else that is going to be seen. I did it by machine long before I knew it was even ok to do it.....before RUclips! I learned quickly that it is way easier to sew the binding on the back and bring it around to the front. Stitching the binding on the front and folding it to the back and stitching in the ditch on the front....nope....too many places where the stitching missed the mark on the back. Yes, too challenging for this person even after many tries, so I just gave it up. So much less stress. I do think that maybe at this point by using wonder clips instead of pins maybe I might be more successful, but I’m not that unhappy with the fool-proof method of stitching it close to the binding edge on the front. Why stress? Love your videos. They are always so helpful. Thank you for sharing your skills with all of us out here just wanting to make the quilt we want to make! ❤️
I absolutely LOVE hand sewing the binding - it's my favourite part. It's so relaxing for me, and although I really enjoy the whole quilt making process, I just love it when I get to the binding :) Thank you, Karen, for another wonderful video.
I deeply appreciate all of the excellent advice you provide! I turn to your videos time and time again because you are an amazing person whose love of quilting and life is clearly evident! Blessings to all in love and light!🙏🏼💜🙏🏼💙🙏🏼🧡🙏🏼💛🙏🏼💚🙏🏼
Hand sewing the binding is my favorite part of quilt making. It’s the perfect tv activity. And it’s so joyful when you turn the last corner and start on the home stretch!
I enjoy using the fancy stitches on my binding for my family quilts, just to make me happy. I usually use the straight stitch for my donation quilts. Hand stitching is no longer an option. Love your videos, I learn something from every one.
I have the worst fear of machine binding. I am afraid I am going to miss the ditch and then after all that work, the binding will be terrible. I would love to be able to do it by machine though, hand binding is not my most favorite thing to do....it is one of my favorites....even though it is my nemesis....(not as much as it used to be thank goodness for your videos) just not my MOST favorite.....thank you again so much Karen!! In the past three years because of JGIDQ, my quilting talents have grown greatly!!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!!
I love your channel so much working on my third quilt now. Your channel is the reason I have been able to complete these can't thank you enough My kids are all very excited about their quilts
So excited to watch your video. I was in a zoom meeting with a friend today who had a quilt top on her wall and was super excited that she already knew “Just Get It Done Quilts” because all my real life friends need to know my RUclips friends ❤️
Hi! (LIsa from Australia) .... I have learnt SO MUCH! from your tutorials, thankyou so much! xx And we have been spoilt with a few new ones lately! lol
Omg!! I never ever think about my decorative stitches on my machine!!! I have a baby quilt I need to make as soon as I'm finished with my craft room declutter, and I am SO going to try method 3 for the binding!!! You just opened all sorts of possibilities with #3...especially where hand sewing is involved! Thank you thank you again!! I am always so excited for every video you put out! 🤗🤗🤗💖💖💖
I thought there was one way and people just approached it differently. But there are several methods snd I get to pick! Very enlightening. I’m not necessarily doing it wrong. HOORAY!
Thank you so much for all your knowledge on quilting I have been sewing for about 50 years and I always learn something new for you. Such a pleasure to watch, on behalf of myself thank you so so much .....
I watched this video while I was hand stitching the fourth edge of a quilt. It's my favorite part of quilting. Just in case I ever want to do one on the machine, I'll have this video handy. Thanks for your great teaching, Karen.
Karen, again you managed to inspire. I have the worst time with binding. I think I should start on something small so I can get some practice. Placemats and potholders here I come! 😁 Happy quilting and stay safe. ~ Arlene
Always hand stitch binding on the back. I find it therapeutic and can do it watching tv at night. Placemats I make get a decorative stitch on the binding. Any method is great because you can then be proud of your finished item👍🇦🇺
I want to thank you so much for your videos! I have been quilting more seriously for 3 years. Before I was just making them for myself. Then I started getting grand babies and wanted to make each one a quilt. I have always struggled with the binding. I've watched so many videos and tried so many methods to make it easier for me. FINALLY you have shown me a method that I can do and have it turn out perfect! I have just started to make quilts for church family babies and friends babies and they look wonderful now! I can't thank you enough! I now enjoy quilting and don’t end up crying! Lol! I'm binge watching all your videos for more help. Again thank you! You've helped me to up my game in the quilting world and now I feel so much more confident!
Karen, thank you for this video. I hate hand sewing! I’ve tried different ways to attach binding. My favorite is attaching to the front and roll to the back. I’ve learned to machine base my binding on the back first, making sure the binding overlaps my stitch line from my 1/4 seam which attached the binding to my quilt. Then stitch in the ditch on the front. Perfect every time.
I've always machine sewn my binding, partly because hand sewing isn't my thing and by that point, I want to see it finished. I normally sew to the back then bring to the front. Thanks for the other options
I use a decorative stitch called blanket stitch. It is exactly like the ones I learned by hand many years ago when doing stitchery pictures. Depending on thread you use it can look faint or thick. I use method 3 for this which I learned on you tube ten years ago while looking for a way to bind once arthritis made hand stitching impossible. Serpentine stitch is a fun, wavy one for kids. Thank you for the blog and especially the tutorials. I watch from Southern California every time the bell notifies me.
I machine sew my bindings more often than handsewn. My favorite is the flange binding but have also used the method #2. I just wanted to tell you that you have inspired me to get 4 quilt tops done this past 10 days. Three are going to the long arm and the charity quilt will be done by me. They will ALL be machine bound. I was fed up with several fat quarter bundles and some "focus fabrics" taking up space in my sewing room for a few years. So I took your advice and just got them done! Better done than space-eaters, right? LOL Also used a pile of scraps for some new mug rugs which now are adding color to the living room. Thank you!
Excited to discover your videos, they’ve put a lot of things into perspective. I can’t even call myself a beginner quilter, I’m just an artist now experimenting with old clothing and sewing machines and wanted to find out how to sew a backing and bind it closed. This whole series has been helpful and illuminating 👍👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🙏
I always forget my decorative stitches Always nervous when the binding is next, Maybe with your confidence and encouragement I will calm down with a happier Ending. Thank you
I'm coming back to quilting after a couple of years' break. I am making a gift quilt and dreading the final step--binding. My walking foot has gone wonky, skipping many stitches. I'm in rural Mexico with no easy way to replace or fix it. So I had to do all my quilting with a regular foot, which produced no skipped stitches. So I'm going to be machine binding with many breaks for sanity! Thanks for this comprehensive and succinct tutorial on the methods that I can use.
Great video! So good to hear that not catching the back of the binding is not only something that happens to me. I was starting to believe I am a hopeless case. ; ) Thank you, Karen!
I know this video is a year old, but your videos have helped me so much. I decided to try quilting as a way to get rid of all our random fabric we've accumulated. I still need to do the binding, but I made my first quilt for my bed, really should have started smaller but I love it imperfections and all.
This was helpful. Thank you! I’ve made quilts fora long time, but never sewed the binding totally by machine. Now I have 3 quilts to bind, and I’m in a rush. Hopefully all will go well.
Oh perfect timing! I’m basically learning along with your vids. I’m onto my 3rd Karen Quilt (Layer Cake) - and trying machine quilting will be an extra adventure. I’d love a video on how to put a label on the back. Thank you Karen!
I love the hand binding process. That means it’s time to snuggle on the couch with a quilt in my lap and my pup on the quilt and a show on the tube. However! I’m putting my perfectionist tendencies aside and want to JUST GET IT DONE! Besides, guild meeting show and tell is tomorrow and I want to show it off! Thank you Karen. I used the #3 method and I didn’t want to stitch blind.
I grew to enjoy the hand-finishing when I bound quilts...until it hurt my hands too much.😵 This week I have three Quilts of Valor to bind. This video will be playing as I learn how to bind by machine. Thank you, Karen!
You and I lost our last fur babies at about the same time and I too am feeling the urge to get a new cuddle bunny. I have been actively looking too but I haven’t found one yet. Good luck with the puppy training!🐶
Well Karen, I am excited to try binding with decorative stitches. I always find ordinary stitches to plain. Never came to mind to try something else. Thank you so much for these tips.
After I sew binding to the top side , I iron the binding over flat to the back . Clips on each mitred corner & 2 clips I slide forward around as I sew. I match bobbin thread color to binding color & use invisible thread on top by stitching in the ditch ... perfection !
0:22 Thanks so much for your very informative explanations of binding. I’m a self taught quilter and have struggled with binding, especially the corners. Your video was so well explained. Thank you so much for the detailed explanation of each step!
I don't like hand-sewing. I've tried all 3 methods you describe, but #2 is my go-to. I don't think anyone who isn't a quilter would think that I could have used a superior method.
Good for you for "just getting it done" Karen! Binding is my favorite part. It means the quilt is almost done! I use method #3 on all my quilts. I use the triple stitch zig zag and generally do it in a contrasting but complementary color. I think of it as my personal signature.
I see you have a Bernina. I love applying binding by machine. Bernina has a flat fell foot, that works perfectly to apply binding. You can use any width, but I usually cut my strips 2 1/4" wide, fold wrong sides together, use my walking foot to sew to the top of the quilt, in a 1/4" seam mitering my corners, then flip to the back, put on the flat fell foot, move the needle over 1 increment to the left, fold the binding over far enough to cover the bobbin thread, put the foot lever down and start stitching. The flat fell foot holds the binding perfectly aligned on the front and back, so the stitching rides along the fold on both sides. No clips or pins are needed at all. This foot is a life changer, if you machine sew your binding.🙂
I enjoy binding and sewing it by hand. But I know there is a time and a place binding by machine, I am excited to try the bindings you shared with us. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge and tips!
Thank you for the tips. I have always hand sewn my bindings but I might just try machine binding after watching this. I would really appreciate a video on quilts for large print fabric. I bought some Laura Burch fabric with beautiful horses on it years ago. I love the fabric and want to showcase it. I have coordinating fabric with smaller print and want to make sure those lovely horses stand out.
So glad you clarified the stitch in the ditch method. I have been trying thinking I was doing it wrong and switched to the edge binding but I don’t think it looks as good as the stitch in the ditch methods
This is an excellent video. I have already watched it twice! I have been using method 3 but I’ll try method 1. Signed up for the 100 blocks in a 100 days. So much fun! Thank you Karen!
I love making my own binding! Never hand sewn...because of hands and patience. But I know that my quilt will be done as soon as that binding is on! Also, I put binding on the back first and sew a decorative stitch on the top.
Thank you for the lesson. I am listenig your vidéo since a couples of months and i like it very very much. I am francophone so please excuse my english writing. Reine 🤓🐕🐱 La Prairie, Qc. 🇲🇶
I use method 3 with a decorative stitch. The wave is my favorite. It's a quick easy stitch and forgiving if you're sewing isn't perfectly straight. I shorten the wave and feed the edge of my binding down the center of my foot and let the wave fall on either side. That binding isn't going anywhere and it looks great.
Hand sewing looks the best and I wouldn't mind if my hands didn't mind. The hands complain, sometimes loudly. I guess I should have treated them better over the years. Thanks for this. I love options!
I machine bind all of my quilts. Sew on the back and wrap to the front. Most of the time I use a 3 step zigzag but sometimes I use a straight stitch. Great video 😊❤️
I have a picnic quilt that I made for some friends who are getting married (for the second time in a year, due to quarantine - they were married alone at the church last year, and having the wedding again for vaccinated friends and family this October). I am definitely machine binding on this one, because they’ll need to wash it a lot after using it for picnics!
I use binder clips from the office supply store instead of Wonder Clips. Much less expensive (4 cents each vs. 62 cents each!) and they work perfectly. I use the small 3/4" size.
Wow i have a 2-1/2 ruler with an angle like yours... I never thought to use the angle for the corner of sewing projects 🤦thank you for sharing this video
Another great video! I do method #2 most of the time, but I like to make it difficult for myself so I use a 2” starting width for my binding. Ha! Just finished binding 5 quilts for charity over the last week, and it feels so good to “just get them done!” Thanks!
Im.going to start machine sewing my bindings on. I do like handsewing, but I have several quilts I just want to finish up, and Use!! And, the arthritis in my hands, wrists, and back(!) are making the handstitching of the bindings more difficult. Time for some shortcuts and changes!!
Good morning everyone. TGIF. It’s been a long week of puppy training...but I did managed to bind several quilts to make this weeks video. Machine binding is perfect for those fast finishes. So grab your coffee and enjoy
cool beans. puppies are ruff but loveable in the end.
I learned so much!
Thanks Karen... beautifully done...truly appreciate all your teachings. New to quilting...your a joy to watch! Have a nice weekend🌞
Great video! Will definitely use these suggestions. In your follow up videos would be great to hear why you still hand sew the back on “special” quilts - is it the look, do you trust it to hold better?
Thank you, Karen. Succinct and helpful, as always. Method no.1 is my favourite 😻
Binding is my biggest nemesis! We have a ' hate, hate' relationship 🤣 thank you for taking the time to produce this series. Hopefully we can change it to a 'mildly dislike' relationship ;)
I would do your binding if you would do my quilting🤪
Kristy Deen, "Binding is my nemesis" is my saying LOL watch the video's that she has on it. Go slow. Make the binding tool that she has and I promise you, it will help. Thank you for a great video explanation of machine binding.
Could you do a video of single binding (1 1/2 - 1 1/4 inch) binding? For placemats and mug rugs I find the double binding a little too lumpy. Thank you for this video. You were holding my hand through this process. So now I have finally pushed through and completed my quilt. 🎉🎉🎉 2:18

Ha! Where were you when I was figuring all this out the hard way? Great video.
Im new to quilting and love your videos ❤️🙏 they are so helpful, thanks from a happy newbie in Denmark 🇩🇰
You are so welcome!
I bind mine using method 3. Great graphics showing the quilt and folding the binding over.
I never thought to use decorative stitches on my binding. I will keep that in mind. Thanks

Oh my gosh, Karen... this video is so perfect and thorough!!! Thank you thank you thank you so much!!!!
I love that orange quilt. There needs to be more orange in the world.
Agreed

Thanx Karen! My son’s gf Kelsey has a small greyhound Glen. I think he’s going to love this quilt as much as she does.
Love that orange quilt. I did watch the Gnome Angel. She is great!

Great video, thank you!! I was able to see why what I thought was the right way to machine stitch a binding wasn't working. So grateful!
I’ve been needing this. Thank you so much, Karen!!
Helpfully clear graphics. Thank you as always.
Thanks for all your pearls of wisdom.
Always delightful to watch your videos...Thank you

I never learned how to hand bind. I'd love to see your method on it. Hope you make a video about that because you explain things so well!
I did in part 1
I love hand binding still watching because I love your videos 🙂
I just love your work!!!!🎉Thank you for sharing your great ideas.😊
Thanks Karen. I’ve never thought of using my decorative stitches. Next quilt will have some fancy stitches. Great video 🪴
I love doing the binding. I hand sew it. It’s so relaxing for me. Thanks Karen for your great ideas. 🇦🇺

I’ve only ever made a couple quilts. My favorite machine binding was the faux piped binding. I love the way it came out.
I've always machine sewn my binding, partly because hand sewing isn't my thing and by that point, I want to see it finished. I normally sew to the back then bring to the front. Thanks for the other options
So does your back to front method end up looking like version #2 from the video? Or is there another method?
Rhodeygirl I do #2. I match my bobbin thread to the back fabric.
Congrats on your new puppy! How lovely for you and your family. And thanks for the great video on binding the quilt.

I should have had this when I was doing the 6 charity quilts last week! Another great tutorial!
Wow...that’s a haul
I love the hand binding process. That means it’s time to snuggle on the couch with a quilt in my lap and my pup on the quilt and a show on the tube. However! I’m putting my perfectionist tendencies aside and want to JUST GET IT DONE! Besides, guild meeting show and tell is tomorrow and I want to show it off! Thank you Karen. I used the #3 method and I didn’t want to stitch blind.
You changed your intro music! I like it! Great video, too!
Great video. Very helpful. Thank you very much.
Great timing for me! I’m starting a binding in 5 minutes. Thank you Karen. This is great!
I grew to enjoy the hand-finishing when I bound quilts...until it hurt my hands too much.😵 This week I have three Quilts of Valor to bind. This video will be playing as I learn how to bind by machine. Thank you, Karen!
Thank you! Great tips!!
You are amazing. I just discovered your channel and I am so glad I did! I am learning a lot from you.

Thanks so much for your very informative explanations of binding. I’m a self taught quilter and have struggled with binding, especially the corners. Your video was so well explained. Thank you so much for the detailed explanation of each step!
You are so welcome!
Brilliant idea 👍
Which number foot is that? I need to give it a try
May I suggest the Fabric Cafe pattern books? They are quilt designs specifically for focus fabrics.
So glad you clarified the stitch in the ditch method. I have been trying thinking I was doing it wrong and switched to the edge binding but I don’t think it looks as good as the stitch in the ditch methods
My sister did the 3rd option and it turned out absolutely beautiful!
This is an excellent video. I have already watched it twice! I have been using method 3 but I’ll try method 1. Signed up for the 100 blocks in a 100 days. So much fun! Thank you Karen!
Excellent video. I love your illustrations, they are very helpful. Thank you 😍🤗
Are you reading my mind, or something??!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! 👍🏽❤️
Good morning! Great video. Thanks

Thank you
You make it look so easy!!!!
it's just takes a bit of practice
@@JustGetitDoneQuilts I’ve managed to make some quilt tops using 10” squares! Finally! They need to be longarmed! Binding scares me lol
I hand sew almost all my bindings. BUT I do machine sew baby blankets and doll blankets (which I make a lot of) so that they are extra secure!
It does save your fingers
