Barrel riding isn’t just about how deep you are. Johns waves were so unmakeable but he surfed those tubes so well that he made it out easily. Deserved scores and win
Heat of the year, perhaps. One of the two surfers had to come out on top, and with a heat that close, it's not surprising that there is dissension. I say congrats.s to the WSL for having the best, most prepared and experienced, impartial group of judges the sport of surfing could ever ask for. If John John hadn't caught that last wave and performed the most miraculous drop directly into that gaping tube, and then got spit out to complete his ride, Gabriel would have won. For someone to say "shame on you" to the WSL after a terribly difficult heat to judge such as this one, they are clearly the one(s) speaking and acting with bias. Keep up the good work Judges!
shame on all the people trying to take away from john's big moment. this was a brilliant match, fair scoring and the compeptitors embraced at end. i understand being passionate about the guy you feel represents your country. i am a huge toledo fan so i am not a brazil hater. but when passion verges over into blinded bullying, it's gone too far. we saw this at the olympics too with the french athlete as he received his silver medal. you create ill will for medina when there is no need to. he can create his own wins==bullying pressure from supporters is not helpful. there are times when i think john is underscored because he makes things look so easy rather than adding drama and flourishes that say "i just did something big!". but i know that it is my bias, and i try not to constantly whine about it. we all have blind spots when it comes to the person we support. try to have some mature awareness of that and respect for the process and for a great moment.
Good luck in the 19' Billabong Pro. Watched that video of that Tahitian " code red" the other day and excuse my language but that is f****** crazy. Looks like one wave you would be squashed or that reef would tear you apart. Got respect for Kelly he's an older man and still charging one of the most besides pipe the most powerful waves have.
When you call someone (John John) "naturally talented" you're not appreciating the amount of work he and his brother have committed to this sport. Didn't his dad build a skateboard ramp/pool in his backyard?
john john's drop on the 9.73 was the most critical of the heat if that means anything. even if they gave him a 9.4 he still would have won. Also, his 9.93 should have been a ten. just saying :)
G.Medina Born in the Atlantic Ocean with small and unstable waves is complete and this scares and intimidates these biased bugs! The battery is clear and obvious
let me esplain. (explain) here is what happened, for everyone to understand, despite all the arguments/opinions out there, here are the FACTS. (in my opinion) ;) FACT#1 is Gabriel's scores are (in real life) a 10 and 9.5 which is slightly higher (in my opinion) so overall he was scored pretty well, I think. on the other hand, you have JohnJohn who SHOULD have (this is FACT#2) a 9.8 (nearly a 10 point ride but its not) and a 8.5 at best. basically he is overscored on his 9.73 ride, because he claimed it (so it must have been insane!) and because he dropped in with his head down so basically eyes-closed, which is pretty tough to do, of course, but the wave itself is nowhere near (not even close) to Gabriel's 10 pointer. so John John was overscored. that's what happened. FACT. (in my opinion)
As someone who's new to the WSL, can someone explain to me: are the surfers only getting points for riding in the tube, or can they also get points for air tricks? Because it seems like they only ride the tube and not much else
3:35 / 7:00 Why was the first one a 9.23 and the last one a 9.77 when both got pretty much the same deepness almost the same tube duration and nearly the same height, with Medina's tube being even a little taller? I love John John, and I also love all the WSL crew for creating us the opportunity to watch some really amazing events, but clearly, this heat was Medina's...
Florence's 9,73 to win the heat was absolutely the same wave of Medina's 9,1. Medina's wave even had the plus with the spit at the end. Anyone can do this comparison. What the fuck was that WSL?!?! And talking about the drop, JJF was more difficult than Gabriel, but the wave was the same. Medina did it easily because he is a goofy, it's fair give a 0,63 difference because one is regular and other is goofy?? JJF's 9,73 was not longer than Medina's 9,1 because the drop. Medina's 10 was the bigger wave of the heat by far. Florence's 9,93 was very technical, but was smaller than Medina's 10. A 9,93 was to much. Gabriel was technical too in a bigger wave and the difference was just 0,07. Remeber Pipe 2014?? Wilson beat Medina because got bigger waves, even though Medina got most technical waves.
JJ and Medina are the greatest surfer from their generation until now, but Medina has a disavantage, he is Brazilian. I didn't see anyone screaming, angry or complaining because JJ did a BIG claim in his last wave, and maybe because of it he got this overscored grade!!! Imagine if instead of JJ was Medina doing that claim?????
Medina does do those claims all the time, so what are you talking about? i have no problem with claims, although I thought Jordy this year did a few that were so far over the top they were bizarre. But john just threw his hands up. There is no disadvantage in being Brazilian--you've won two championships, one with a mediocre surfer (although I admire his tenacity). So how is that discrimination?
What a SHAME!! An incredible heat, but ruined with the last wave score. 9.73??? It's cristal clear when you compare with the low nines... Shame on you WSL..
That is why i like to watch these heats after the fan heart is gone and reason comes back in mind. Always thought Medina got ripped off on this heat, now seeing again without the heat of the moment is totally different. Have to say uau ,,,,they ripped him off big time...LoL. Just joking,in fact it changed my mind and agree with JJ victory,JJ last wave was over 9.31. Well deserved victory, now in the final where did he go? He gave it to Kelly, and the GOAT missed the perfect time to retire....Kelly,Kelly sorry to say but you blew it.
ok then why don't you try do a crazy late take off with the lip on you shoulders and tell me if John didn't deserve the 9.73. Medina deserved the 10 though the wave was perfect
for me medina got a 10 and a 9 !!!! whem you get a 10 like that , jon jon best wave was far from medina 10 point ride!! so for me jon jon got 9.3 and a 9.2 medina won 19 x 18.5 !! medina 10 point ride is the key
New school rivalry? Medina is ages beyond John. The only place John is as good as Medina is on big left barrels but this heat is clear to me that Medina won. But if you really watch their surfing with no bias you can see clearly that Medina is way superior
ha! no bias? right, because that would be how you're seeing it? you would see medina getting a 9 on the wave he fell on. Medina ages beyond John? That doesn't even make sense.
GM had 1 slightly bigger wave. JJF had 2 critical drops and on one of them he shouldv had a 10 and he's on his backhand. Even Potz said only 2 people couldv pulled off those drops and that was JJ and KS. Stop the crying.

Barrel riding isn’t just about how deep you are. Johns waves were so unmakeable but he surfed those tubes so well that he made it out easily. Deserved scores and win
Love rewatching this heat. Truly remarkeable surfing from both John and Medina. Both in their primes at perfect 6-8ft Teahupoo. Amazing.

Super heat! While I would have given that to Medina, it was a tough call. We need to see these two pitted against each other more.

Damn, that's such a close heat but one guy had to win. No matter the outcome, there's going to be a group of people who believe on guy got robbed.
Insane heat. The future looks good for these two. Can anyone explain why the top seeded guys met in the semi though??
JJF over score all time. Crazy! Medina wins.

agree with you, brow... 9.73 not because the wave, but because it was the most difficult drop and wave to finish
Joao Pedro He positioned himself so that he could get a better score. Also, it was at least a 9.31 which is what he needed.
I think the 9,93 was an overscored Wave.... 9,93 is basically a ten, if you compare with gabe's 10 the Wave should be a 8,90-9,20
G.Medina Born in the Atlantic Ocean with small and unstable waves is complete and this scares and intimidates these biased bugs! The battery is clear and obvious
@@josinhogoda3687 i think you should take in the consideration that john was using the back hand which is more difficult than the forehand bro bro

because JJF dropped the most difficult wave of the heat (9.73)
