One of the most thoughtful inclusions of the m8 firmware is the ability to connect to it via a web browser, along with keypress indicators. Here you can also capture video while still being able to handle the m8 unencumbered!
Another suggestion: the PVB command allows for slightly less intense vibrato than LFO on pitch. I often use it somewhere in the middle of a table to have it kick in after a few steps.
Great video! One suggestion: to make chords with the FM synth it's much easier to use PIT commands for the oscillators than ratios. For example in the skyliner patch (which is nice!) from the intro you can set the RATIO to 1.00 for the first three oscillators and 0.50 for the last (to go under the root note), use 1>PIT, 2>PIT, 3>PIT, 4>PIT respectively in the MOD slots, and set PIT (which is in semitones) to 0A, 11, 18 and 0A in the MOD1/MOD2/MOD3/MOD4 values (or alternatively, the FM1/FM2/FM3/FM4 FX in the sequencer or table) to get the same chord as in that patch. As a bonus, the individual notes get reflected in the little keyboard on the right. Usually, I keep one of the oscillators (the chord root) at its default pitch and modulate the PIT of two others (for example, at 03 and 07 to make a minor chord).
I knew the m8 could have a lot of possibilities and that there's a lot for me to learn but this is madness I love it and appreciate it thank you a lot!
Wow, this is SUCH a useful video, thank you!It answers all these little questions I had about how to do specific things like triplets and odd timing, and in such a clear, tight way. Awesome!
This really is TOP TIER Dirtywave M8 Tutorial video. @@fulltang1 I’d love to be wrong bc it does interest me. I used to prefer programming beats to playing live too. I could see a best-of-both-worlds getting ideas started with a midi controller & then fine-tuning on the go.
I tried the timestretching example using latest firmware 3.2.7 but the output was completely garbled - any ideas if something might have changed / how to bring this example up to date?
Hmm. I am away from home so I can't check but the logic behind it is that you have a ramp wave that is controlling loop start and end. Even if the settings change here and there this logic of how it works won't change. It has to be in play mode of Loop and length 0 and the frequency of the ramp should be around 10 Hex.
Tried the time stretch function on a hi hat loop down to the t, but it ended up just playing it super fast and weird. I wonder whats wrong. Did i miss a step? Do i need to chop it up into 16 in the sampler first?
How do you make the Bucephalus Bouncing Ball effect on the latest update since the screens have now changed? I did it once and now just spent an hour+ trying to recreate it and cannot! 😢 I'm sure it's the instrument mods page I'm failing on... Instruments page i have PLAY - FWDLOOP LENGTH - 50 Instrument mods page: Mod3 - LFO DEST - LENGTH AMT - FF ? OSC - 00 TRI ? TRIG - 00 FREE ? FREQ - FF ?
Use a ramp shape mod to the sample length I think. I'll check it when I get the chance but this is the logic behind it to use shorter and shorter sample lengths and loop it.
Do you like the workflow of this over the Polyend ? I line my Polyend but I rarely have a session where I don’t experience weird bugs that i really can’t get around. It falls apart above 300bpm
One of the greatest features about the M8 is how functionally rock solid it is, both physically and softwarewise. Generally if you have a serious bug, the dev will squash it somewhere between 5 minutes and 24 hours :D but they have become very few and far between.
By means of a HOP command in the FX column. I show it in the Venetian Snares example where he gets 7/8 timing by hopping at step 14. You could even put a random and a hop and have a track that is of random length every time!
@@Digiphex ok I think I found it…it’s part of Groove (shift+up) when in the phrase. Setting it to a value of 04 on the first step sets the phrase to 16 steps
@@findjonmoses No. Groove is used to set the swing or set triplets. There are 3 columns on the note entry page for FX commands. Use the HOP command just after the line where you want the phrase length ended and Hop it back to the beginning of the phrase. It's just like I show on the Venetian Snares section of this video.
About the amen break. Do you need to slice it for each song or can it be saved into a sort of asset (sample bank) that has the slices set already? I'm super tempted to get one of these M8s.

I fell in love with chopping breaks after using the M8 . Thanks for all your tips i will definitely be using them.

Yeah, you can do pro stuff with this, it is unreal. I didn't even get into downsampling in the sampler which sounds totally old school.
@@Digiphex I gotta try it out! It's so overwhelming and exciting lol
that lone patch is spot on haha. that last beat sounds like its off of galaxy garden
Yeah he used to use the saw wave with long release and LFO to pitch a lot. I am a huge fan.
From someone just starting their journey into this incredible device, thank you very much for your clear demos, examples and instruction!

hi, thank you for posting. Always enjoy your content!!!
YES YES YES!! This is unbelievable
What an incredibly powerful little tool
Yes, I have only begun with it and there are many more possibilities to explore.
Excellent demonstration. Thanks!
Very helpful. Thank you. More please
Holy shit a tracker!!! 🤯
Really great and helpful video! Thank you so much!

I have a lot to learn on it but I am working on it.
OMG!
Awesome. Would love one but having trouble finding one in Germany
Lets hope they make some more soon
Nice!
So M8 came from LS DJ ? - thanks for posting the vid
Nice, thanks great content. I like the relaxed flow, some people speak way to fast. Any thoughts on syncing the M8 and OP-1, maybe a custom usb cable?
Thanks. M8 can link to OP-1 via Ableton easily. But without a DAW you need a MIDI box like RK-006 or something like that.
What a great vid! Fun to learn & confirm with 100% certainly this interface is NOT for me, lol
I bet you'd be surprised if you get hands on. I encourage you to try headless, because it's an incredible device

What do you mean by theme?
Sorry, I should’ve been clearer, the colour scheme on your M8, it’s super nice

I think that is mashing all 4 directions at once.

OK I think I have it. I had to set the LFO FREQ parameter to 40 (not 10) - 4 phrases 0 steps 0 ticks - to make it work@@Digiphex

No you don't need to chop it. The concept is that the speed of play matches a once cycle of a ramp. It should work with these settings.
