My dad, knew a retired F-14 Pilot, while home on leave from the Army I got the chance to talk to him. He would start conversations about dogfighting the F-16 with 'Those little F-kers'. I remember he said you had to really, really know the F-14 to hang with the F-16. The problem was it was small so you could lose it in the ground clutter, and it's ability to accelerate in a vertical climb.
@@timonsolus He spoke of dogfighting everything else as though it were normal. But with the F-16 he said you had better be on the stick, or you were 'dead' quick
That something that big and heavy can move like that, with basically an "analogue nervous system", is amazing. I'm personally partial to the F-16 because it's "the sports car of fighter jets" but I most certainly get why some people are infatuated with the F-14.
Great job to both pilots. I really enjoyed those engagements. Shotgun was sure able to make things difficult with those jinks. Well played. Seems like another turn or two in that one circle and GS could have had a serious problem. Good gunnery saved the day. I guess sometimes that's all it takes. Thanks for putting in the work to get the vids online. That new audio track is really good. I'm saving for a machine to run DCS. I can't wait to start learning all the things. Might be another few years after I retire. What with work and kids and all that. In the mean time I really enjoy your content and analysis. Especially in the F16, and especially dogfights. You should consider doing one where you have a wingman in the f16 with multiple bogeys and let us hear the coordination / strategy over the radio. ... That Loose Duce f4 video was awesome as well. I watched that many times. Keep it up...thanks again.
Ooh, he baited you good in that first round, he was ready with that jink, whipping the plane around and forcing the overshoot. You just barely got out of that one with your airframe in one piece 😂
Ngl, I love how Shotgun is flying the F-14. Normally near or at the limit you see pilots stuggling to keep the roll angle steady, but his movements are just super precise.
That was some nice F-14 piloting. Has anyone built an F-8 Crusader for DCS? It would be interesting to see how it performs agains F-4s, or some of the modern jets.
I know the dcs simulator isn’t perfect, but bing watching your channel these past few days has given me a lot of new perspective on aerial combat. Thanks! And by perspective in this case, I mean I always thought the f14 was a near perfect fighter jet and its retirement was largely due to maintenance and operations costs . It looks like junk at this point. I never thought it would lose to an f16. And then I always thought the f16 was a generalist. Seems like it actually excels at most roles and is really only unfavorable against purpose built later air superiority fighters.
I always root for the F-14, mostly because of Top Gun if I am being honest. But its also a good fighter for its age and size. And the Navy retired it to early or they could have modernized it in my opinion. I grew up and live in Fallon (Where Top Gun is currently at). Now I see F-35's, F/A-18's, F-16's (the aggressors) and some F-5's still take off
Good fight ! Love the new victory theme ^^ Big up to Shotgun, i hope next time you guys fight it'll be more challenging ! Also i've seen some video of the RIAT2024 show, quite inspiring, and that F-15QA.. it moves like a Mig-29 ! Reminds me some of videos ^^
A long time ago, I saw a document that said the reason they wanted the 6000rpm gun, is that if a plane, at 450 knots, crossed the nose, they would still take at least 4 rounds... I'm sure its mathematically provable. Does DCS support tracking all those rounds at 100rps....?
450 X 1.15 gives you 518 mph. 518 X 1.47 = 761 feet per second that the plane is traveling. 100 rounds a second 1/100 of a second apart at 3,450 feet per second 1 bullet every 34 feet
We need a video of just the tomcat doing wild things. Like that one time the F14 pulled a cobra and broke everything and still almost killed you. The tomcat can pull some crazy moves
Question from a novice pilot for anyone who can answer: at 8:30-ish, Shotgun pulls into the vertical to get out of the rate fight. Why wouldn’t you just off-set the circles and reverse if you’re on the deck? Seems like that would be a safer way to transition to a radius fight instead of going vertical against a viper with plenty of speed to follow.
@growlingsidewinder any chance you can upload the tacview of some of your fights? Im new to DCS and im trying to learn techniques. Im struggling with; what is optimal speed for a 2 circle, how tight of a radius should i be committing to, how often should i be at full afterburner, etc. when im watching your videos, i try to focus not just on your manuevers, but also your gauges. You do a great job explaining and demonstrating air superiority, tacview would just help me fill in the gaps. maybe a video idea to deep dive thought processes on technique of a dogfight, a look into HOW you make decisions. thanks for the content.
I'm curious if SHOTGUN used to fly with the =DoW= Squad back in the DCS 1.2 and 1.5 days ? I recognize his handle from either =DoW= OR from VARS racing. I can't remember which. I hope he sees this and responds. His call sign sounds familiar. If it is him, I'd like to send a Salute and "Long Time No See" Friend. 🙂

First!
Could you please do the extreme underdog, the A-4E? It's my favorite plane and it hasn't been in a vid since 2022?
Ok quick question. Do you recommend keeping the wings to auto or shove them fully forward before the merge?
Man that jink followed by the forced overshoot at 3:00 by Shotgun is a thing of beauty!
Definitely "did some of that pilot shit" on that one.
Yeah that was so damn smooth, no wobbliness or anything! I wish I could fly a tomcat even half this good.
Very impressive.
Was like a scene straight out of top gun
He just tapped the brakes a little.
You can see Shotgun's proficiency when he rolls. It stays smooth and lands on a bank angle without needing to be corrected.
My dad, knew a retired F-14 Pilot, while home on leave from the Army I got the chance to talk to him.

A slick viper is a real problem. Great thrust to weight ratio too.
How did he feel about the F-5E? Did he say? That's even smaller.
@@timonsolus f5 doesnt have the thrust at all, nor the rate from passive stability
@@timonsolus He spoke of dogfighting everything else as though it were normal. But with the F-16 he said you had better be on the stick, or you were 'dead' quick
4:30 "We've neutralized the fight and I'm becoming offensive" - and you're also almost fainting 😆
That “NO” scared the heck out of me. That was a good tough fight.
Thanks!
thank you very much.
11:30 "Talk to me Goose"
He's still back there. 😂😂
I would really love to hear from Shotgun & Otter about this fight. Like an "interview" from their perspective. Such good flying from the 'Cat!
That was great to watch! Big props to Shotgun! Great show of skill in the F-14!
Hope we're getting more videos of you going against Shotgun. Him and Toxic deliver great performances and it really comes down to the plane in the end
So this time “Goose” and “Maverick” ejected from the flat spin going toward the sea.
It is an immutable law that whoever is flying the F-14 is the protagonist.
Dang, that move in round one where he dumped all his speed was crazy
It was literally “I’m gonna hit the brakes, he’ll fly right by”
Holy shit that Tomcat can move. What an amazing fight and flyer.
That something that big and heavy can move like that, with basically an "analogue nervous system", is amazing. I'm personally partial to the F-16 because it's "the sports car of fighter jets" but I most certainly get why some people are infatuated with the F-14.
I saw that first over-rotation on the rudder and thought "Yup that's a great way to induce a flat-spin."
Couple Great fights, especially Round 1. Shotgun gave a good show.
Goose you're going to have to punch us out. I can't reach the ejection handle!
At least Otter had better luck than Goose.
More fights with Shotgun for sure. That was amazing!
Top Gun scenario, for sure with that flat spin.
I've been to an airshow today and a GS video is the best thing I can watch to wrap the day up, love your vids GS!!! 👋
same here!

got excited soon as i heard the name shotgun, he's AWESOME dude. great fights
F-14 is such a beauty
welcome back Shotgun
Gotta say, after all this time, your humility is impressive. Strong trait...or training. Either way. 😉🤙☝️🙏
@3:25 ...two birds of prey with theirs wings out, one has twice the power of the other!
Ooh, he baited you good in that first round, he was ready with that jink, whipping the plane around and forcing the overshoot. You just barely got out of that one with your airframe in one piece 😂
Great flying man, that Viper really reacts to you. Huge props to Shotgun for some great flying! Love the new outro song too
Damn, that guy knows what he’s doing.Props to the F-14 pilot
What a good DCS F-14 Pilot! Please show us more rounds with him. Maybe F-14 VS F-14?
Ngl, I love how Shotgun is flying the F-14. Normally near or at the limit you see pilots stuggling to keep the roll angle steady, but his movements are just super precise.
11:04 I thought the second pilot who ejected late was gonna land into that crashed burning plane 😂😂😂
Shotgun was my call sign back in my college days.
I would love to see a B-25 go to the merge against an He-111.
Not a fair fight. The He 111 is 5 years older than the B-25. Should be a B-25 against a Ju 88.
LUL he dropped his flaps for that turn
That was some nice F-14 piloting. Has anyone built an F-8 Crusader for DCS? It would be interesting to see how it performs agains F-4s, or some of the modern jets.
Love the perfectly timed "NOOOOOO" in the music. you're vids are amazing 🤩
@03:06 Did he just pull the brakes and make you fly right by? :)
The F-14D was a beast.
Can't wait for it's appearance on DCS...
5:25 Nice Danger Snow timing!
And again at 11:30! :)
The Isekai Goddess: "Oh good, I didn't have to respawn you today."
That was truly an Epic fight! Big thumbs up to Shotgun for going absolutely bonkers and pushing the 14 to the Limits. Good on yea mate! 😊
Wow, that flat spin was CRAZY!
Saw one of the F-16 aggressors from NAS Fallon (Top Gun) flying really low yesterday at the gas station.
one day GS will allow darkness to enshroud him and brap the chutes
I want to see a roadkill 😂😂
Two absolute legends
Nice to have shotgun back here onnthe Channel
Shotgun did some Tom Cruise moves 😍

05h10 about when he jinked.....that was epic cause he knows your technique.
bro uploads so frequently and its ho high quality
Great “Die Hard” movie symbolism. On cable they are running DH marathon. Good timing. F14A B D?
I was really hoping to see more die hard movie references in the comments. Your the first on I’ve seen so far. lol

Yeah, it got to the point that machine gun rounds were space too far apart in the air
450 X 1.15 gives you 518 mph.
518 X 1.47 = 761 feet per second that the plane is traveling.

You hit the nail on the head with the new vibe!
Welcome back SHOTGUN!!!!
Id love to have heard his audio when you got that first kill.
I've seen TopGun. All he had to do was split the throttles and he could have defeated any aircraft.
Im glad Goose made it alive this time...😁
You were not kidding... Shotgun is REALLY GOOD! But so are you. :)
Maverick & Goose vs Viper in a Viper
55 years of F-14 in 2025 and 50 years of F-16 in 2024.
i love these videos man. youre a real good pilot
I was OK at Strike Commander. I sucked at LOMAC, as in I never really properly learned to play it. I was a good A Wing pilot in X Wing v Tie Fighter.
Digging the new music, nice little change.
i think he broke your ankles......nice jink😊
Viper in Dogfight always gets Tomcat!
Shotgun went into a flat spin out to sea

man i am loving the new music
ShotGun always puts on a good show.
Goose! Watch the canopy!
Great flying and great video - although hows the 'flight dynamics' on the F14 at low speed, looks like a puppet on strings the way it moves around
That was a really good fight!
Nice. Thank you
Great fight! Love the new music!

wathcing this video and patiently waiting for shotgun to split the throttles and come around.
Noticed you checked your 6 after the "fat lady sings" bit... were you making sure that no missiles were back there?
nice moves by shotgun

Does shotgun have a channel like this?
Hey GS, when you have good fights like this, would you do the tacview debrief, and BOTH of you discuss what you were thinking/planning in the AAR?
Awesome fight
Hey @GrowlingSidewinder - any idea why the F-16 doesn't use visible tracers in it's gun?
you can load tracers, but no tracer is more realistic, obvs you don't want the bandit to know he's being shot at. that kind of thing.
@@GrowlingSidewinder Gotchya. I just noticed most of the other jets have tracers and wondered what was up. Thanks for the response!
We really need tracers on the F-16...
I usually root for you. Not gonna lie I was rooting for the F-14 in this one
What is the control that allows for a visual radar lock via the HMD listed in the keybind menu?
F16 for the WIN!
If you make your own cover of push it to the limit maybe you can get around copyright laws.
also danger zone, kick start my heart, Free bird, etc...
That was great piloting by both guys. Any less of a pilot, Shotgun probably would of won both fights. Makes for some intense battles
'fat lady' quote reminds me of something
Would it be possible if you'd manually sweep the wing to give more falling resistance to the rear and point the nose down to regain control?
Day 65 of asking for a modern Falklands scenario: Typhoons and Lightnings vs. Falcons
