    Oi Wazza :) There's nothing more special than watching someone so incredibly talented and knowledgable, yet so incredibly humble at the same time............what a lovely and interesting Man is Barry. I was particularly moved when he was talking about Lynyrd Skynyrd.........hope I spelt that correctly........as it was clearly evident how moved he was personally by such a tragedy . A most enjoyable hour of my Day was spent.
    Cheers as always :)

    Great Interview Warren and Barry. I'm a old musician from the 1950-60"s who remember recording and mixing out tracks on 15" reel to reel. I saw the handwriting on the wall in the seventies and moved to computers and have been doing so every since. keep the information coming.

    What is truly interesting is the connection between art and science. Both Barry and Tom Dowd worked on projects that had a great impact on our cultural and technical move forward, as it were: Barry working for NASA and Tom working on the Manhattan Project. The ability to understand the science behind how something works, such as the physics of sound, is just as important as the art and craft of recording. Great interview.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  9 лет назад

      Hi +George Storey Agreed! The NASA connection is huge! That was such an important part of my childhood, he just casually mentioned it when I asked about the clock! So I insisted we talk about it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

    One of the great things about your videos is what the person you interview has to show. I'm fascinated by lots of accounts, and then my jaw hits the floor when you're speaking with the guy who worked on "Show And Tell" by Al Wilson. One of my all time favorites! I'm a big 70s guy - I also noted "Sara Smile". Thanks again, Warren! (I won't call you Wazza :-)

      +Produce Like A Pro On the subject of 500 series, it would be nice to see you review some of the Lindell Audio stuff. They have really affordable racks and modules, including a transformer-coupled mic pre with 2 bands of passive EQ for about 300$. Pretty crazy. I think that would be a great review for your audience - myself included - struggling to find good quality products at a price we can afford. Anyway, thanks a lot!

      Agreed!! As a teenager I lusted after everything in music. Speakers and amps for play back would now be boat anchors. But they sounded a lot better. Still hear songs mixed for vinyl changed to CD or MP3. On vinyl I could do the Downbeat needle drop test......But in the "New" formats I do not ID the song until the lyrics. Many thanks to both of you!

    Warren you just keep upping it man! This is the best content out here these days. I love the Pensado stuff but they seem to be losing their way with the time restrictions, advertising blah blah. Which I get but its suffering (to me) in just what this stuff is all about. I love how some of your stuff goes short and some longer and the banter is my favorite. Not knocking anything just want to say I love what you're bringing and I hope it continues man.

    As always great vid Warren! I have always been one of those guys who would read the liner notes of my albums to see who played on who's records. That was the best thing about vinyl you had something to read while listening to the music. I now pay attention to who produces, and engineers them as well. These kinds of videos are a great glimpse into that world, even if most of the tech talk goes over my head. Thanks, and keep it up!!

    Hello Warren,
    I do apologize for being long winded, haha. Ever since we've been summing out of the box it has encouraged us to move further away from "in the box" processing. Thanks to your tour of Sunset Sound we discovered some great reverbs, delays and compressors that we have added to our setup. Your patchbay overview video allowed us to figure out a better way to harness our outboard gear and use them more as inserts rather than feeding into them, post DAW fader. The control over mixing has improved 3 fold. It seems the less processing the DAW does the better. The mixes we do are sounding better, more organic, punchier and we are using less compression overall. We have noticed there is less of a need to make the mix "louder". Question is: Do you see the mixing world taking a turn away from the "loudness wars" anytime soon? P.S. your passion for recording and gear is infectious.
    Thank you,
    Chris Hovsepian

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  9 лет назад

      Hi +Next Radio Agency thanks for the question Chris, yes I do! There's many bands who don;t subscribe to the louder is better theory. However they are the more independent sounding bands as opposed to the major label acts, we shall see how those fair and whether they start thinking that way, my guess is they will! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

    Another great Video! Would love to hear more about doing corrections to the monitors to make up for an imperfect room. That was such an apt remark, about playing like your life depended on it. I'm missing that a lot of times when I listen to some band. It sounds good, the musicians are talented, but the life is missing. I'm just thinking.. What would one do, as an engineer, to try and inspire the musicians to conjure up said 'life'?

  • @MartinWeeksmw
    @MartinWeeksmw 9 лет назад +1

    Hey Waz... (you knew I would do this didn't you?)
    I was wondering as my mom worked for NASA in the early 70's if by any chance Barry might remember Annie Weeks. I ask as I got my first and second original Ovations directly from George Kaman who originally worked for NASA. (Mom also got to meet and know Glen Campell, and Fred Tackett as well from her articles for NASA Activities and her interviews of different engineers all working for the Space Agency during the end period of Apollo/Soyuz and beginning stages of Space Shuttle.) Just curious no worries.
    One thing I would like to suggest/ask about for future interviews? Since some of us are more musician then engineer, is there anyway you can arrange for us to actually "Hear" Examples of the different compressors and summing gear when you are going through them? The technical specs are all good of course but I would like to have an audio example of the different dynamics to help my learning curve. See I don't have a good "Room" acoustically so must rely on what the meters are saying, and of course burn lots of CD's to go and play other places to improve what the low rent speakers and bad room are doing when I'm mixing.
    You did that a bit with the acoustic treatment examples of the room, but I would like to be able to hear how such and such compressor colors the vocals, or how a specific exciter affects the tone or sound of an instrument. Like the "Re-Amp" you two were talking about. It would have been nice to hear how a combination of a Marshall, and Fender sounded through that specific device.
    Just a polite request if it's possible to do. Thanks sir and as always...
    HAVE A BODACIOUS DAY! :-p

      Hi +Martin Weeks Haha yes Wozza is what my English friends call me! I believe Barry said he worked them in the late 60's only. Definitely checking your mixes in other environments is a great idea! There's definitely a lot of additional videos we can spin off of just this one! Will take all of your ideas into account, I appreciate the positive feedback! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

    Hi Barry,
    Thank you for your insights into your studio setup. I have a similar room and would like to purchase a table like the one you have your monitors placed on. Could you please tell me who makes that piece of furniture as I have searched for one to no avail.. Thanks again!
    PS Steve Gaines was an immense talent, got to see them a year before the crash.

    My middle was a bit muddy on some of my mixes, so I figured better make a better room than the old apartment which had lead in the walls and on the paint and pipes

    Hi Warren! - Brad Donohoo here again. . Alright - to ask my question I have to explain a little bit. When I mix I tend to get very OCD with my organization . . - so I bus a lot on nearly everything in sub-divisions usually something kind of like the following.
    Guitar1 Recording
    / l \
    GuitarLeftPan - GuitarRightPan - GuitarParComp
    \ l /
    Guitar Bus / Submix (then I have a submix for every other inst, overheads, and kicks/snares)
    |
    Final Gutar Submix ( beside the Master - I do this one if I want my lead and rhythm mixed together)
    l
    Pre-Master (Submix)
    l
    Master
    Do you see this being problematic in any way? Just wondering if I'm doing something completely wrong - or if this is right or if it's something I'm doing that's original at all????
    - As always - thanks for the advice and awesome vids -
    - Brad Donohoo -

      Hi +STOOPID KRAZY Interesting! Are you only tracking one guitar then making it 'feel' stereo? I would definitely track it twice and pan left and right! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

    • @Dreamlander
      @Dreamlander 9 лет назад +1

      Yeah - in this case - but this was morely just an example of how I'm routing. - Is there any real problems that you know of with routing "Inst 1" with Parallel Comp. on a seperate track - then running that to a buss and then to a submix ??? It seems to work great but I wasn't sure if I could be losing something by doing it this way. Thanks again.
      - Brad Donohoo -

    Really enjoyed this interview with reviewer & gear aficionado Barry Rudolph.
    He says the following about the Sunset Sound S1P Tutti Mic Pre Amp at 21:16.
    “They sound really good. I think of it like this: they have an extra bottom and top octave, is one way to look at it. When you listen to them they’re more open on the top and more low end comes in them.”
    However the Sound on Sound review of November 2014 tells something different:
    “I’d still describe the sound as fairly well balanced, yet there’s a definite focus placed on the mid-range frequencies. There are preamps on the market with a more solid low end and a more open-sounding air band […] I don’t view this slightly ‘boxy’ character of the Tutti preamp as a reason for criticism at all; it’s just useful to be aware of this character, as it may or may not be helpful and desirable, depending on the situation.”
    Warren, what is your opinion regarding the tonal quality of this Pre Amp; Is it more suited for midrange rock or quieter 70s singer/songwriter material?

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  9 лет назад +1

      Hi +TBlizz Thanks for the great comment! I use the Sunset Pres all of the time, a review like that concerns me because when guys like Joe Chiccarelli use them every day to make huge sounding records and many of us use the consoles every day to make huge sounding records you have to wonder! All I can say is I love the way they sound! plus Barry is a review himself and he can choose any gear he wants! So personally I trust his and Joe Chiccarelli! Happy New Year! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

      +Produce Like A Pro I agree, Joe Chiccarelli is one of the best engineers around and his opinion carries great weight with me. I checked out the Electrodyne 511 EQ because he has two of them in his 500-rack.
      Enter SOS reviewer Hannes Bieger, producer en engineer of electronic dance music. Works from a beautiful studio in Berlin with great analog outboard gear (including a Retro Sta-level) and a few Electrodyne 511 EQ’s…If you’re a true Brit I suggest you watch the video on RUclips by Telekom Electronic Beats on him, paratroop into enemy territory and get some answers! ;-)
      Happy New Year!

    That was hilarious when Barry was talking about Lennard Skinard and getting a credit or not. By his description of mostly sitting around and making sure they played well he should have gotten a full Producers credit, and not a special engineers credit. Ha Ha.
