Middle class civil servant's son becoming PM is the clearest demonstration that LKY's system actually worked. That said alot of others were sacrificed to sieve out a talent like Lawrence Wong thru that system. I am confident the new PM will build a more accomadating empathatic society that gives everyone more chances at becoming successful

In those days, having a parent who’s educated & English-speaking would give one an edge in education. It’s naturally much easier for him to get the President scholarship. Nowadays, most parents are educated & many children have tuition. It has become more competitive and it is more difficult for any individual to stand out. One has to fight tooth and nail to get a scholarship. I’m from Hwa Chong Institution but I didn’t hold any leadership roles in CCA or anything. I didn’t even bother to apply for scholarships cos the chance of getting it is nil. 😂

Not true, Ex PM GCT came fr humble background too. His mom raised the whole family single handedly as his father passed on v early.
