    I’m half black and half German, so when I went to visit my German family I had to make a stop in a super tiny village. It was really pretty so I decided to walk around. I got stared at the entire time, mostly by this one older couple (maybe in their 70s-80s). But they came up to me and started to chat and they were super nice!!

    Staring is not meant bad, its just because of thats the first way of making contact or showing someone interest. Those who looked shy away where maybe realized just in that moment you looked back this could be interpreated in a bad way. Germany is pretty dense populated and normaly the people are realy handsome. If someone dont likes you you can see it in the eyes or maybe its the bad vibrations. Keep beeing openminded and honest, even if you have had few bad experiances.

    "not used to black people" That is an important statement. I know that influences me a lot if I meet people I do not know, especially if they seem to be interesting (read: different than me). And I will remember them by those attributes, that are less common: red hair, asian face, funny glasses, black skin, sunburned nose and so on. Hello Tabitha, thank you very much for the interesting video.
    As a German, I am always amazed at the statement by foreigners that Germans would stare at people. No German would feel that way. You just have to see that there is an interest in other people and it is considered friendly to take notice of others. Nobody can understand that this is then perceived as staring. However, I have already heard this statement frequently from American friends, without ever having felt this staring myself in any situation. It's a cultural thing - on both sides.
    Regarding the Hahn area, it can be said that the population there is strongly internationalized by the former Hahn Airbase of the US Air Force. Dealing with Americans has made people very open to others, strangers.
    At the end a little lesson on 'Büchenbeuren': Bue -schen-beu-ren ... just practice a little more - Bue-schen-beu-ren, Bue-schen-beu-ren ...

    We stare at literally everyone. I personaly stare at people for there clothes, or when I find them pretty/cute.
    It get's weard though when they stare back becouse I don't want to make them uncomfortable becouse of my curiousity. Most of us share a smile when we make eye contact with the person we are looking at, or we look away to leave them alone xD

      @Ani Flowers than there is that we stare at people that we find intresting and the fact that we germans socialise first with our eyes I found for myself the first thing we do is to look at some one and try to make out how they are as a Person before speaking to them. Another reason might be our uprising in our cultre " if he / she can't look you in the eyes this person might not be truthfull or hides something bad"

    Well, staring is not considered an aggressive act here in Germany. Sometimes people will even not notice the other person they are staring at and think of something completely different. You might even baffle us by by making eye contact or smiling back. ‚OMG’, have I met that person before and do not remember him/her?‘ So: looking: yes, eye contact: no. The staring....being German I can assure you that here, quite often NOT looking someone in the eyes can be interpreted as kinda sleezy. Gives off a certain "can't look me in the eyes" vibe. In reverse it can feel very strange for Germans when we travel to the USA and the customs officer looks at our forehead....! Racism in Germany clearly differs from the US variety. In America, everything's about color. German racism is more based on xenophobia and your skin color is just one of many indicators to give away if you're German or not. Personally, when I meet a black person for the first time I do make the assumption that this person might not be German. If I then perceive this person as German, as "one of us", depends completely on culture and language. Don't get me wrong, I don't believe at all that Germans are inherently better or worse than other people. But one of us? That depends on the language, and I don't mean HOW WELL you speak it, but HOW and IF you speak with a local accent. When I hear you're from here, then, you're one of us. Only this summer I noticed this when I saw a couple of black kids play "Ich sehe was, was Du nicht siehst". The kids spoke German in a way you can only speak when you've been raised in Berlin. And they played such a typical German children's game. The mothers on the other hand spoke French and German with an African accent and also an African language I didn't recognize.
    At this moment it struck me that I would always perceive these kids as Germans but never their mothers.

    I'm white and a German, I lived most time in Hamburg and my best friends were 2 black twins. I also lived in plenty other cities in Germany (moved total 18 times) and from what I saw is, in little villages there are really few black people. They really appear more in big cities, maybe out of fear that the villagers aren't as open minded as in big cities? I don't know but my two Hamburg black friends and me didn't particularly see any black person offended because of the skin colour. I just got the feeling nobody really cares about your skin colour as long as you are a nice, hard working person. We Germans are really strict regarding work. I don't want deny racism, there are racist people in every country but I don't see as many here as in America for example. Also my 2 friends went to an African church in Hamburg, I was with them couple of times and it's really nice celebrating with them. I don't believe in God, but it's just nice to have a great time together, where skin colour is really not cared about.

    - the staring is normal and not related to your color. Sometimes i notice i stare at people not even seing them.
    - As for "not a date". Dating isn't really a part of german culture, even though it became more common in the last years. What germans usually do is hang out together, become best friends and then get into a relationship. Therefore, that architect could have been interested in you. It's just another approach.

      Back when I was a musician women would throw their numbers up on stage etc. That was obvious but I could never tell if women liked me until I had friends tell me hey that girls really checking you out. Women tend to be more sneaky than men when it comes to that. When I was over in Germany to visit a German girlfriend she and some friends took us to a nude indoor swim park. Everyone just had a towel draped over their shoulder. German people are very comfortable in the nude. They see each other at a very early age. My girlfriend looked like Bo Derek. I would look at the men to see if they were checking her out and they were not. If I walked into a restaurant every guy would look and stare at her. Just a different culture. I was stared at and talked about by German’s when I ordered something to drink in English. The ice breaker was when they found out I was an American musician.

    The staring is a typical German stereotype and it is very true. The point is, that in Germany eye contact is normally the first contact to be made. Normally this boils down to "scolding look" the person does not like you and is not happy seeing you. "No look" people do not care about you. "Friendly look" people try to get in contact with you this is often accompanied by a smile. If the look and smile is returned, it is ok to approach in a conversation. Yes we do have racist people or people that do not like foreigners in General. But the majority of Germans are very friendly to just everyone as soon as they get to know you.
    Hope you enjoy Germany and keep an open mind even if you encounter unfriendly people we are not all like that ;)

    Thank you for doing this video. I am a black German and for me it’s always interesting to hear about other black folks' perspectives coming over. There are actually quite a lot black people in Germany (ca 1 Mio). In Berlin, most African communities are in Wedding, I believe. But there are way more in West Germany, especially in cities in North-Rhine Westphalia, Frankfurt, Hamburg etc. BUT racial discussions are a mess in this country. The white majority still acts like racism is a problem of the far-right and not an everyday problem caused by everyday people. Growing up, I always wanted to leave 😄
    In my experience, people either rock with black people, detest them or fetishize them. And I am not here for the last two groups. Germany has a long way to go..

Home is home especially when you've spent so long there and learnt the language. Racism is definitely an everyday problem there however, I'm not prepared to put up with it...Germany definitely has a long way to go, but, I do believe that a change is possible 🙂.

      Well, maybe you should realize, that racism is a problem all over the world. Espacially as a German I have to be very careful when I'm in a foreign country inAsia or Africa. Why? Because I'm the white minority and I'm German. Especially in the US one of the most aksed question is, if I'm a Nazi. So don't cry about interracial problems in Germany...it is everywhere against everybody. Stupid people will not die out, it's a pity. Normal Germans don't care if you are white or black, they only look at you ( staring is a very negative word ), because they are exited. There are regions where where we have not so many strangers, so peole are wondering.

    Oh, i forgot to say: Please don' t forget, that germany wasn' t an immigration land for a long time! During 2nd world ear and the first years after, germany as a whole was very isolated. The first "wave of immigration" started during the last years of tge 1950ties, when germany was in need for workers. Because of the large death-rates of the war, there was a great lack of male workers and the german government started campaigns to interest people from other countries ( especially italians, greek, the "free" ( non-soviet...) slavic countries, and turkish ...) to come to germany to fill this gap. By then tgey were called "Gast-Arbeiter" ( "guest workers"). That was the first time especially for a lot of the residents of the german countrysides, to come in contact with people of other countries, their languages and culture and it also only happened in the western part of germany, because tge eastern part was occupied by the soviet-union and even more isolated.
    Please keep in mind, that these immigrants still were of white color - the experience of black or brown skinned persons could only be made by contact to colored members of the US, british or french military troops, that still gathered in germany after the war - so this was very unusual.
    Further and wider experience happened since the lately 60ties, when the german economics spreaded world-wide and germany fully opened to the world - but still there is a different situation between the open-minded cities and the german - especially eastern - countryside, where people are generally older, more conservative and reserved.

    As someone who hates being stared at, and as someone who is a native New Yorker (we are not big fans of staring) I couldn't imagine how uncomfortable i would feel in Germany. I love the country and language but I just don't like when people stare at me. Mexicans stare a lot too.

    • @TabithaLaker
      @TabithaLaker  3 года назад +1

      It is very annoying, especially when you are met with a mean look. Apparently the staring is because they are interested in foreigners, or because you look good, but it needs to be understood that staring is actually rude lol

    Biracial babies don't always come out golden brown. They can come out black or white as well as light skin. I come from a mix family that is how i know. A lot of times you can't even tell. Because they can just look like one race or sometimes they will look middle eastern or even asian. It is a strange thing.

    I think this mostly happens in European countries. I am American and I noticed this a lot when I toured and backpacked in Europe. It was cringey most times. But I get it, it’s not common to see black women. Especially as a dark skinned woman. I do get looks in the US. I am married to a white guy.

    • @TabithaLaker
      @TabithaLaker  4 года назад +5

      Yes that is true - Germans can be super kind too! I also like the fact that they are very straight forward - though sometimes it can come across rude. In my previous videos I highlighted the fact that I had a negative experience because it was one of the main reasons I felt unsafe. As for fake smiles, I don't often take them into consideration because I know some people struggle with coming across as genuine/confidence etc - I judge more based on the content of our interaction :)
