- Six years ago, then 11-year-old Sarah Thalhammer fell into the icy waters of the Great South Bay while struggling with a neighbor's rowdy dog. On Saturday, she graduated high school. CBS2's Reena Roy reports.

Military Veterans or active military servicemen are always Appreciated but retired cops or active duty cops are often forgoten or not appreciated enough for their service
I do get thank your for your service from people...chokes me up and humbles me every time...I point out to them that I was a police officer and not military and it's safer, but I'm told I still served...again VERY humbling...
Who is forgotten for their service to country are the spouses who support the military and police officers. Military wives are overlooked, yet they often do double duty to act as mom and dad to children during long deployments, and trainings that take the service member away. There are frequent moves where transitions can be difficult. Active duty military have their company of colleagues for support that spouses do not automatically have ready at their disposal. There seems to be a lot of misconceptions surrounding military life until you've lived it and know what the truth is, and what is really going on. How many times do family members get acknowledged for behind the scenes support, and told, "Thank you for your sacrifices, for your frontline foxhole duties at home?" They generally never receive the medals or accolades that many deserve when they help the military community. It would be nice for civilians to extend their gratitude to those honorable family members they know who have upheld unpaid supportive positions and do so with commitment and selfless loyalty.
Ahmir Ahmir I'm glad to know that your experience was much better; however there may be some units that give lip service to spouses. It is the responsibility of the spouses to express their needs, but sometimes, like service members and others, we have been conditioned not to rely on others or it would be seen as a weakness. On Veterans Day, the accolades appropriately go to those who serve. I would like to see a movement of public appreciation extended to the spouses who volunteered and continue to give of of their time and talent. I've known many in this category. It's like the healthcare workers that rarely get recognized except when there's a pandemic, then they are called "essential" when they've been there all along. To me, everyone is essential.
@@donnawoodford6641 amen ❤️ the spouses and family of military and first responders are the unsung heroes 🙌 my dear friend is a WW 2 veteran plus Korea and Vietnam .. 7 brothers and their father served in wars starting in WW 1 . Therefore their mother had a husband in WW 1 then her husband and/or 3 sons in every war through Vietnam 🇺🇸 what an amazing lady !

Awesome job by the officer involved in daring rescue and that is no easy task at all. Both them will be friends for life. Thank you for just doing your job and it one of the better stories for law enforcement
