Throwin insults already? You are saying Frieddman is not a good guitar player. You have lost all credibility to speak your mind of guitarists and music. You lose bud. Keep practicing at guitar you will be as good as Marty one day.
Chris is of the nicest people you'll ever meet and really generous with sharing his technique and talent with young and old guitarists alike...let the past be the past--he's definitely atoned for and deeply regretted whatever happened in the past-- but others don't seem to forgive OR forget though they still make use of his talent and work...
Indeed I think it's the styles the influences that are so different, Marty Friedman is from the Uli Roth school, where as Chris Poland is from the John McLaughlin school.
he was a jazz player first, but he never changed to metal, he played metal in megadeth. if you listen to his solos carefully, u'll find tons of jazz licks on his solos.
I’m not musically inclined at all, but I like to think I have a good ear for interesting music and when I hear Chris play I know it’s him...because nobody can come close to sounding like him. I remember in the Megadeth Behind the Music, Dave Mustaine said that Chris could play circles around him. I could always tell he was better than Dave, but it wasn’t until I heard is solo stuff that I learned how amazing of a player he really is.
1-Chris/Marty They both did amazing for Megadeth. Both have amazing classic/beautiful/impressive solos. 2-Kiko/Broderick Both are very skilled players. However seem to be mildly lacking what bit of special Chris/Marty had. 3-Dave There some Jeff Young guitar solos that are easier than some of Daves soul crunching rhythm. That being said. 4-Jeff Young/Al Petrelli/Glen Drover Great guitarists in their own rights. Just not the shining highlight many consider the others.
I used to think Hammet was the Shit. Then I grew up. Kirks playing is one dimensional. Hes a great soloist, for what he plays. Ive seen Mttalica live twice, and Justice, and the black tour, and he puts on a great show, but hes just the lead guitar player in a band. Chris Poland is a phenomenal guitar player and has always been much more than a soloist. Anyone know if Bastille day is a tribute to Garth, he died on Bastille day I believe. I know they were like brothers, must have been tough.
How? Poland is MUCH MUCH MUCH more out side of the box and jazzier than friedman in both technique and tone. Polands lead tone sounds like a fucking saxiphone and his shredding is based off of jan hammers key board playing while his phrasing and bending and vibrato is so sweet it could make anyone cry. And honestly Poland is much more clean than Friedman, its almost scary how clean Poland is. Marty is unique... but he still sounds like everyother guitar player out there imo.
@BernietheShredder Woah sweet! My favorite band is Megadeth, favorite album is Peace Sells because it had the best songs and solos to go with them, and Ellefson has said nothing but good things abut Lamb of God, I'd have to agree. Someone told me to listen to Ashes of the Wake so I looked it up, and immediately recognized Poland's solo right before Adler's toward the end, I was so excited lol
Garden Haze He actually does use it a lot. Which surprised me because I know he can do most of the crazy bends and vibrato with just his fingers, but he uses the whammy for that too.
Say what you want about drug abuse and music truth is Chris sounds as amazing as he does because of the journey he has been on. His note selection is more akin to horn playing or even singing, the guy straight up is living and dying every nuance, not an easy place to get too, but it fucking shows. Bastille Day has some tortuous passages in it, Icarus Falls is a monument of emotion, he takes the guitar to hell, and gets lost on the way back. Glad he finally made it. Thanks for sharing.
But to be honest this brought so much more to the table than what Hammet could ever do. Jazz is such an interesting form of playing people just presume its just a massive solo with no sense of direction those people don't know shit !!!
Agree, just realized a few days ago when i listened to Mary Jane and right after that How The Story Ends, that Jeff Young and Chris Broderick have similar styles in guitarplay.
Been a huge fan since "Killing" was released and I got my hands on the original vinyl of "Return". Stunningly original player with killer phrasing and tone for my money - he's also got a not inconsiderable amount of technique and still remains criminally underated.
@screat I agree with you, and I'dd like to add that with Friedman and Poland, they go to places where you don't expect them to go in their solos.. They are original and that's really important for me in music.
@MetalguitarlessonsUK I auditioned a guy that played Rusty Cooley's betcha can't play this flawlessly, and FASTER than Cooley did in his piece. From there he transitioned into this descending Dorian lick and then started doing all these crazy ass sweeps, then continued to play the "Under a Glass Moon" solo. There were other guys who even played some Nevermore/Panzer stuff that Broedrick didn't play cleanly when I saw him live.
@bloodyfool23 I start to listen to LoG 3 years ago and it don't mean i don't like then now only now i listen to more pro music. ok what are you listening? whats is your favorite guitars?
@MarshallVamp I agree 100% I LOVE Martys playing, its so fucking unique to the music out there and it never gets tiring and he has so many solos written yet he outdoes himself again and again. Genius!
Friedman has his awesome as hell exotic Japanese- inspired schtick, which makes him sound totally unique and awesome. I'd be able to distinguish him from anyone easily. Poland has his awesome as hell fluent, overdriven, jazz-inspired pentatonic-heavy schtick, which makes him sound totally unique and awesome. I love both, and they're the top of what they do. I don't see the point in arguing, as they're both technically proficient and classy musicians.
@mattman1127 Indeed man, he also played a guest guitar solo on the As the Palaces Burn album ("Purified" is the track). You could swear his guitar really 'talks' on those takes...goddamn! :P
@bloodyfool23 It may be 7 months ago. It may have little to do with Poland. But I will tell you this. Lamb of God is an absolutely REMARKABLE band. Willie and Chris Adler right some beautiful songs together, and Mark plays like an absolute monster. I haven't heard another band that plays with such a balance of speed, accuracy, and power. Oh, and Poland played an incredible solo on Ashes of the Wake.
I picked up Return to Metalopolis when it first appeard on Vinyl, then replaced it with the CD as well as picking up what Ohm tracks I could. One of the most underated and yet unique guitar players around :)
i've listened to noise. my favorite noise artist is yellow swans. i also really like lightning bolt and derek bailey. though im not sure if you'd classify derek as noise or avant-garde jazz guitar. i take a lot of influence in my playing from those guys. a band i've been into recently is yowie. their first album could be classified as noise. more ordered and strict, fast, dissonant, tight. check them out if you haven't already.
Hey, they were all good! They molded me!!! And sometimes Friedman is what I want to hear. Other times when I'm real mad, or real pissed, Its Slayer all the way! Ever see Metalica, "And Justice For All" live? Note for note perfection my friends. Yet they all got a little sloppy as we All got older. I lived it, and I keep the memories alive even if my favorite drummer (I'm a pro drummer) or guitarists (Iommi, Beck, Page, Lifeson, Patruci, fuck! 15 others, are alive or dead. Relish it 4ever Dudes!!
@MetalguitarlessonsUK I don't think there is a "better player" sure Marty's more skilled and comes from a more diverse guitar background (an Eastern influenced guitarist who played with Jason Becker than in Megadeth...yeah he SHOULD play some crazy stuff), I appreciate each player for what they are, I have my preferences, but I'm never going to say that anyone is better than anyone that successful (Marty, Kirk, Dave, James, Maiden, Angus, Zakk, etc), I just yell at assholes who say they suck.
@MetalguitarlessonsUK The reason why I don't consider Hammett's playing overly verbose as I do Chris' is because Hammett's playing is what it is. Metallica was always about James' rhythm guitar and his vocals and the solos were added in as a spice. Hammett accepted his role and did what he could in it, his style fits the role perfectly, he was always more of a Hendrix guy than a super shredder. His solos lasted two minutes tops, and did what James and Lars asked of him.
I always hear people say that Hammett was taught by Joe Satriani.. well, he may have taken lessons from him back in the day but that's not the same as saying that Satch was some kind of mentor to him or something. I could teach some kid the pentatonic scale, give him a wah pedal and he could play like Kirk in no time. His technique or style isn't anything out of the ordinary. I've been playing 15 years and there are plenty of Megadeth solos that I still have trouble with. Metallica is cake :)
Musicality and Technical complexity is not the same. Hammett created solos that fit the song perfectly and also easy to hum along. Most of megadeth difficult solos are not singable
@zzzhuh Both are great, why do people bash other guitarists?, both have distinguishable styles and great phrasing, vibrato etc. both wrote memorable solos,
@MetalguitarlessonsUK First off, one good live DVD doesn't mean that he's a perfectly clean live player, conversely a poor performance doesn't make him a shoddy player. When I saw Nevermore, Jeff was blowing his doors off in a dueling solo little interlude that they did. And yes, there are players just as technically skilled as Chris all around. With the popularization of "super shredding" I've met guys that started to practice sweeping at age 13, what do you think they're like at age 23?
@kstetkev Undeveloped? I hope you do realize Mustaines compositions have overpassed boundaries in musical theory. The reason you may say Pitrilli's arrangements are not good is because Pitrilli is a background guitarist (that may not be the name but anyway) which are those musicians who only work in a band just to earn money but arnt really inclined towards creating a certain kind of music, this is why he was removed from Megadeth, since he had no real interest or amibition for thrash metal.
@tomaszn22 Chris Broderick is only a metal guitarist? I would beg to differ. He is an accomplished classical guitarist, and has even done videos teaching people how to play jazz funk style techniques on guitar. I'm not saying that he is a virtuoso, but to say that he is only a metal guitarist is just ignorant.
@screat I would put Poland and Marty streets ahead of Chris to be honest. I'm always left with a feeling of "ok that was well played but do I actually care?" with Chris's solos and I get bored after a few playbacks (same with Yngwie etc), whereas I actually feel like "fuck this is so awesome" when I hear Marty and Poland solos, no matter how many times I listen to them.
@MetalguitarlessonsUK The point wasn't Brendan Small is a virtuoso, it's that the techniques that Chris uses and excels at aren't uncommon. There's guys with similar levels of skill, who can do more creatively than he does. And yeah, I've auditioned guys for a COVER BAND who can demolish Chris. I've seen him live, dude couldn't keep up with Loomis or play some of his Megadeth stuff cleanly.
i agree with you...feeling comes from inside and is expressed emotionally through the guitar. Poland has more feeling imo also. Broderick is fantastic albeit a bit mechanical. Not hating..just my opinion.
WE MOST VOTE FOR HIM TO SEND HIM STRAIGHT TO GT3!!!! by the way, do you know that after years and years.. chris poland did play with mustaine during the system has failed album!!!
@MetalguitarlessonsUK Thing about Broderick is there isn't a whole lot of live footage, and since I'm not a dick bag I don't record the concerts that I go too. Yeah, he was great on the live DVD...that's the DVD they chose that show for a reason. No one said he COULDN'T play live, keep in mind I'm not saying that Chris isn't an extremely technically skilled guitarist...he is, there's just so much more to being a good musician than technical skill.
@SwampAshHSS Dude, Poland's a pretty sweet player...listen to his bending stuff. The dude's a fine jazz player, if you like EJ but not him you just haven't listened to his stuff enough.
@HurricaneTBag Furthermore, were getting off track...were talking about his playing and whether or not he's a special player. You mentioned Kirk Hammett as someone who he just blows away, that's fine...the stuff that Chris plays on his music is much more technically advanced than the stuff that Kirk plays with Metallica. That being said, Kirk wrote Metallica's biggest riff, Sandman, say what you will but it's a legendary contribution to music. Where's Chris' legendary contribution to music?
Without a doubt one of the most unique and criminally underrated guitarists out there. His phrasing is otherworldly.
@D B his note choices and bending idiosyncrasies and the way he begins and ends his solo passages. Marty Friedman is also very unique in this regard.
his vibrato style ALONE is more difficult than , for example buckethead and friedman s
overall style
Imagine a collaboration between Chris Poland and Marty Friedman.
It absolutely would NOT suck. They both have such diverse styles, with both them on lead, it really could be a supergroup in the making.
It's an acquired taste, not all will understand right away. =)
your mind is closed. figures.
Throwin insults already? You are saying Frieddman is not a good guitar player. You have lost all credibility to speak your mind of guitarists and music. You lose bud. Keep practicing at guitar you will be as good as Marty one day.
+KingAcosta28 Marty so obviously doesn't suck... My guess is that you're mad at him for not being as gay as you are.
No one can sound like him... amazing player
Poland has a style that I have never heard with any other guitarist.
True that! He can make a guitar sing like no other I have heard pretty much! He is in a realm of his own!
Chris is of the nicest people you'll ever meet and really generous with sharing his technique and talent with young and old guitarists alike...let the past be the past--he's definitely atoned for and deeply regretted whatever happened in the past-- but others don't seem to forgive OR forget though they still make use of his talent and work...
yup, i got to meet and talk to chris at least 3 times, super cool fkn dude
Enough with the Marty vs Chris bullshit, both were the best things to ever happen to Megadeth imo and should collaborate on a song :3
Just stumble on Chris Poland stuff and Wow! What a beautiful player!
Damn, this is so cool No one sounds like him. His sound and technique is unique. God bless you C. Poland
@@EZVR247
No John McLaughlin!
Its totally different, in Cacophony Marty was an amazing guitarist, but poland is the only one who can put 12 notes in one bend
Indeed I think it's the styles the influences that are so different,
Marty Friedman is from the Uli Roth school, where as Chris Poland is from the John McLaughlin school.
Chris is one of the most unique guitarists out there in my opinion. Very gifted player!
just wow! that bastille day solo is really beautiful, guessing from the name that it’s a tribute to gar.
he was a jazz player first, but he never changed to metal, he played metal in megadeth. if you listen to his solos carefully, u'll find tons of jazz licks on his solos.
chris poland is way too underrated like because marty was great and dave is good but chris is like a fucking god
his note choices r unique-incredible feel!
No question!
I’m not musically inclined at all, but I like to think I have a good ear for interesting music and when I hear Chris play I know it’s him...because nobody can come close to sounding like him. And ill say that kiko has a mix of every of them , kind off.
Chris solos in Endgame album are sick
glad someone is appreciating this dude. "Silence" has been my favorite guitar solo since I heard it ten years ago.
One of the best guitarists on earth. And to think he cant bend his left hand index finger!
Man.. So amazing. I wish he still had that bc Rich/jcm 800 combination though. Best tone I've ever laid ears on
How? Poland is MUCH MUCH MUCH more out side of the box and jazzier than friedman in both technique and tone. Amazing. Chris is one of the best.
This guy is so great. Amazing how underrated he is.
Poland -Samuelson:an epic duo has been taken from the world.
You can really hear "Killing Is My Business" and "Peace Sells.. But Who's Buying?" in his solos.
Poland for president!
the thing about chris his tone his style is SO unique, there is no one out there like him! Awesome guitarist.
@BernietheShredder Woah sweet! I saw Chris play years ago- back in 1988 with Megadeth, never actually realised just how good a guitarist he is.
Very nice! I love Chris! Thanks for posting this!
Clearly a lot of Allan Holdsworth influence!!
He mentions Allan often in interviews.
Jan hammer
andy payne han jammer
YOU ARE SO RIGHT!
John McLaughlin and Jeff Beck aswell!
Bastille Day and Icarus Falls are such a genius work!
Deam how i miss seeing him in megadeth! :(
Wow, great stuff! The fluid stuff with bends and whammy bar reminds me of Jennifer Batten. Sweet blurringly fast and melodic...
Andrew Francis I don't even think he uses the whammy that much. He's just that good
Garden Haze He actually does use it a lot. Which surprised me because I know he can do most of the crazy bends and vibrato with just his fingers, but he uses the whammy for that too.
Hes so damn creative this guy. Originality coming out his ears
My favorite guitarist. Ty Tabor 2nd
Say what you want about drug abuse and music truth is Chris sounds as amazing as he does because of the journey he has been on.

Just bought OHM(the album). Great stuff!

graiske you totally nailed how i thought he is really good at soloing which is cool
ahhhh nice immortal track at the end :)
What an amazing guitarist :)
@MarshallVamp I agree 100% I LOVE Martys playing, its so fucking unique to the music out there and it never gets tiring and he has so many solos written yet he outdoes himself again and again. Genius!
Chris Poland fucking rips man!
T___T what beautiful solos!!!!!! Chris Rules!!!! T__T
I prefer Chris to Marty but Marty is still a fantastic player like! He had lots of great solos not just tornado of souls
Friedman has his awesome as hell exotic Japanese- inspired schtick, which makes him sound totally unique and awesome. I'd be able to distinguish him from anyone easily. Like his solo in Devils Island
Kick ass player. A fucking beast!
@mattman1127 Indeed man, he also played a guest guitar solo on the As the Palaces Burn album ("Purified" is the track). You could swear his guitar really 'talks' on those takes...goddamn! :P
He's a pretty damn good guitarist- and that's all that needs saying.
"A pretty damn good guitarist" are you high or something? He's a MONSTER!
Oh, and Poland played an incredible solo on Ashes of the Wake.
really good video, i like it!
i would say that "silence" is my favorite on here, its a new take on blues that ive never heard

it'd be awesome to see him and marty friedman hav like a guitar battle
i loved his work on the peace sells album

he is amazing
YOU JUST READ MY FUCKING MIND! THANK YOU!
best vibrato ever !!! \m/
What guitar is he playing in the first two pictures
I believe that gold yamaha with f-holes is one made from leftover parts at his request, IIRC. He talks about it in an interview somewhere on youtube.
Yamaha SG.
@MartyFriedmanRulez66 Your name says everything.
Oh hey there
@zzzhuh Both are great, why do people bash other guitarists?, both have distinguishable styles and great phrasing, vibrato etc. both wrote memorable solos,
What's cool is that the severed tendon allows him to play stretches that are, normally, next to impossible.
And yes, there are players just as technically skilled as Chris all around. randy and jason are tied with me, i just cant decide and i dont have to . enjoy the music they left us

league of his own...
Bastille Day has to be my favorite
that double cutaway les paul is cool
Yamaha SG 2000.
@MetalguitarlessonsUK The point wasn't Brendan Small is a virtuoso, it's that the techniques that Chris uses and excels at aren't uncommon. I've seen him live, dude couldn't keep up with Loomis or play some of his Megadeth stuff cleanly.
@bloodyfool23 Chris poland plays a guest solo on the lamb of god song ashes of the wake. Chris poland likes LoG. People have opinions. Deal with it.
i agree with you...feeling comes from inside and is expressed emotionally through the guitar.
Gar died about a week after Bastille Day.
Bastille Day - July 14
Gar's death - July 22
Dat guitar tone....
@MetalguitarlessonsUK Thing about Broderick is there isn't a whole lot of live footage, and since I'm not a dick bag I don't record the concerts that I go too. @SwampAshHSS Dude, Poland's a pretty sweet player...listen to his bending stuff. The dude's a fine jazz player, if you like EJ but not him you just haven't listened to his stuff enough.
A virtuoso.
What band did he play Silence with?? Sounds amazing!
goldenchopsticks Damn The Machine, I believe
Anyone know what pickups chris uses in the yamaha?
pretty sure he has been clean for a long time

it reminds me of good mourning/black friday
can someone tell me the name of the band that wrote psycho boy? i can't seem to find it :(
