I'm not a polyglot but I understand many languages and have been lucky enough to speak a few at different times. The two most important factors are exposure and motivation. I'd hope that 50k plus a week provides the motivation, and working 3 hours a day leaves plenty of time for immersion and exposure. Mostly referencing the sports guys there, but also I'm ex military and learning the local lingo saves so much time and gains so much local respect it's always worth doing. I don't know any professional soldiers who didn't invest in this at least after their first time abroad and not knowing anything

It's very common for the Dutch to learn English, German and French in high school at the higher levels, but I saw Verstappen also do 40 minutes of talkshow in German, not just a few lines after the race but in depth, and mostly correct German. That's quite impressive without having been emersed in German like living and working there but just by schooling. The most remarkable language skill in F1 might actually be that Nico Hulkenberg is fluent in Dutch.

why would be the most remarkable? Dutch and German are very similar language, it's very easy to learn from one to anothet. I know plenty of people to speak both languages fluently, mostly Dutch people speaking German, but also the other way around. And also they all speak English, which is also helpful to learn Durch from German.
Regarding Max, i read an interview with him where he said that Helmut Marko required from him to talk in German between them, so it was kinda mandatory to him. After that, i think his German improved a lot to be able to do 40 minutes of talkshaw.

Nico Rosberg grew up and went to school in the Monaco Principality, which you probably already know.
That means he knows both the Monegasque language and French.
Probably fluent Italian as well, as he's on first name terms with Flavio Briatori, another Monaco resident, who prefers speaking Italian to English, which oddly, he's actually quite fluent.
So, it's no surprise that Nico's Spanish is fluent. Italian and Spanish are very closely related languages.
Thinking about Hamilton going to Ferrari, raises questions about the well known English reluctance to learn other languages; but, he is quite a capable musician (with both the guitar and piano) and obviously has 'the ear'.
Picking up where he left off, when racing in Italy in his teens, (where he met and was friendly with Nico Rosberg), then under the guidance of Fred Vasseur. . .
He's a wealthy fellow, so splashing the cash on an intensive 'total immersion' course in Italian in his in-between races time at permanent residence in Monaco and all holidays, will at least show willing, like Seb Vettel did, in his time at Ferrari . . .
If he says 'he can't spare the time' - it means won't! And that would indicate to Italians that he has no respect for their culture and that of Ferrari . . . That would be a mistake.
      "Can't Means Won't!!"

While many of these drivers have an enviable command of several languages, just as many demonstrate that you don't have to be fluent to enjoy having fun, doing your job and making friends in another language. So French person here to answer the Monégasque question! I'm pretty sure Monaco's official language is French and there isn't a language specific to the country. I don't know if it's because he is Monégasque, but Charles Leclerc has a tiny bit of an accent when he speaks French, which maybe due to the fact that he speaks Italien very well? Also since Monaco is located near the southern border of France, he may have picked it here because French people who live in the South usually have an accent too.

Monégasque is a language similar to Italian (actually a dialect of Ligurian), but only a few people of Monaco still speak it natively. :)

I mean they have lots of free time so the time to study a language is not an issue. That and it's somewhat part of their job makes it easier to learn a language, imo.
The incentive to basically earn more money if you learn a new language is a pretty good incentive.
Many F1 drivers traveled all over the world from a young age and they might have friends that is from another counbry so they have been exposed to foreign languages since they were young. Which I think also makes it easier to learn a new language.

I also recall when Giancarlo Fisichella (aka fisi) had to learn English better very quickly in late 90's when he joined either Jordan or Benetton. I remember being impressed how quickly his interviews in english were improving! Yuki Tsunoda went through that a few years ago too.
Would have been amusing to cover Kimi Raikkonen, who was super intelligent but basically refused to speak much full stop 😂 but I bet he has +3 languages under his belt too.

Checo speaks Spanish, English, Portuguese, and a bit of German (the reason being that when he arrived in Europe, he arrived in Germany to compete). However, he acknowledges that he doesn't remember it much anymore and it's easier for him to understand it than to speak it.

21:56 One of Vettel's first teammates was Jacques Villeneuve when Vettel was a test driver for Sauber in 2006. Because Jacques is from the State of Quebec , Canada, it's more than likely that Vettel picked up Quebecois before he picked up European French.
22:47 Well, given he was comfortably putting his hands off the wheels, the race was over. It's not pit limit speed, but it's still around 70-100kph.
    ruclips.net/video/LH9yXEpoMEw/видео.html
Vettel still holds the record to be the only driver to recite all F1 Champions from 2020 all the way back to 1950. 21-23 was Max Verstappen, so that isn't hard to add 3 more year on top of that.

9:05 The fact someone is Dutch/Belgian doesn't make them "naturally good at English". Yes I know. "we" have the highest English proficiency of all the non native English speaking countries... we still have to learn it as a second language. In fact, many (if not most) Dutch speak what we call "Steenkolen Engels" (which the English seem to call Pidgin English). When I look at myself for example, I read and write on almost A+ level, my speech however barely reaches a C-.

Most F1 racing drivers have to communicate in what is to them, a foreign language: English!
    Lando Norris,
    (McLaren)
    Sir Lewis Hamilton,
    (Mercedes)
    George Russell,
    (Mercedes)
    Alex Albon,
    (Williams)
    Oliver Bearman,

    Daniel Ricciardo,
    (Alpha Tauri)
    Oscar Piastri,
    (McLaren)
    Lance Stroll,
    (Aston Martin)
    Logan Sargeant
    (Williams)
were all born in countries where English is the first language. (i.e. England, Australia, Canada, United States.)
    Max Verstappen,
    (RedBull)
    Sergio Perez,
    (RedBull)
    Charles LeClerc,
    (Ferrari)
    Carlos Sainz,
    (Ferrari)
    Fernando Alonso,
    (Aston Martin)
    Pierre Gasly,
    (Alpine)
    Esteban Ocon,
    (Alpine)
    Mick Schumacher,
    (Mercedes)
    Nico Hulkenberg,
    (Haas)
    Kevin Magnusson,
    (Haas)
    Yuki Tsonoda,
    (Visa Cash team RB)
    Zhou Guanyu,
    (Steak F1 team RB Sauber)
    Valtteri Bottas,
(Steak F1 team RB Sauber) all have first languages ranging from Netherland, Flemish, Spanish, French, Monegasque, German, Danish, Japanese, Chinese, Finnish.
Some are fortunately able to make themselves understood in various combinations with French, Italian, Flemish, German etc. However, English is the accepted lengua franca.
(Curious personalities like Toto Wolff team principal of Mercedes are muli-lingual.
Born in German-speaking Austria with a Polish mother, educated in French at an educationally exalted institution, adds fluent Italian and English to his Arnold Schwarzeneggar accented German.)
Retired 4xF1 world champion Sebastian Vettel speaks excellent colloquial English and passable Italian from his time with Ferrari.
Max Verstappen's fluent English is more appreciated by native-speakers when he is temper-driven by a 'potty mouth' . . .
Lando Norris has a Flemish-speaking Belgian mother.
Daniel Ricciardo can make himself understood in Aussie accented Italian.
Mick Schumacher has virtually no accent when speaking English.

When my grandfather came to Canada in 1929 he could speak 5 or 6 languages. He came from a German speaking town in Hungary.
But, when he got here he could not speak to anyone because he could not speak French nor English.
He taught himself English by going to the movies and to read English from comic books. He and his fellow Hungaro-Germans also agreed that they would converse amongst themselves in English. After all that at the age of 85 if you woke him from a nap he would speak in German until you asked him to speak in English.
One of my great regrets in life is that I didn't let him teach me German or Hungarion or Polish or Russian or Czech or Dutch.
