I joined a tour group (Bikestyle) and we do some riding to intersect the stages - I can now understand why Europeans are so strong and why other continent's riders go there to train - the gradients are easily 10 percent (and much steeper) anywhere you go. @@MrVKennethThat's almost literally completely the other way around, I'm afraid. The expenditure of carbohydrates exceeds the rate of absorption. Even assuming 150 g of carbs per hour only results in 600 kcal of carbs ingestion. In the meanwhile these guys can push 420 watts as FTP, and at that intensity very little fat is used. And 400 watts per hour is about 1600 kcal per hour, so yes a lot of carbs still have to present endogenously and bonking will occur if the event lasts long enough. Also, lactic acid is the saviour of endurance athletes, not the enemy despite of it being a common myth.

I actually think I know why Vingegaard look back. Look at the situation a few times. He is looking at Yates because when pogi attacked, Yates job was done, and he swung out to the right, but in doing so he got in the way of Vingegaard's response, making him have to curve around Yates.
I am not certain of this, but it looks like he was annoyed with Yates for a moment, because of it. And honestly I would have been too x3
Does anyone agree with me? Or am I misreading the situation? 3:50

Adam Yates has been an absolute demon striking fear into GC Leaders hearts these last 2 years, but I think Sepp Kuss still holds that title. You could see Pog was tiring and Vingegard seemed to be getting stronger. UAE have lit up the first 1/3 of the tour to try and eliminate the other 3. The gaps are still pretty small considering the amount of climbing they’ve done. I fear for Pog when they hit the big mountains as Vingergard seems to be improving by the day and Pog whilst better than 99% of the peloton, has shown a tiny crack today. It may be a one off. Whatever happens this tdf has been outstanding.

These pulls at the end made no sense and were counterproductive in every way.

He think Jonas is better in the high mountains so pogacar feels he has no choice but to attack on all these other stages to try to get the win. If hw just sits back then Tadej would now be like 10 secs ahead only and he doesn't think that would be enough. So he is forced to attack.

I mean, what a stage; I was shouting at the TV when Pog attacked. Jonas did his classic pacing to bring it back then Pogi smashed the descent. Jonas looked like he went deep to bridge the gap on the penultimate climb while Pogi seemed to crack. In many ways, Pog is lucky that Jonas only won the stage as I think there was a chance he could have lost a lot of time today. My overall feeling is UAE need to let the race come to them rather than going on the attack. Consolidate the lead, let Visma do the work and wait for the right time to go. Of course, easy to say that as an armchair fan with hindsight 😀
