    "... Spirituality comes from the mind, not the brain."

  • @ricklanders
    @ricklanders Год назад

    This is all super interesting. Aside from particular brain regions, we also know that "spiritual" or mystical experiences are mediated through 5-HT2A/C, which is one reason why psychedelic drugs commonly cause religious experiences and insights. It perhaps works the other way, as well: that religious practices strengthen pathways associated with mystical experiences and 5-HT2A/C receptor and transmitter function. So it might be safe to say that the mind definitely creates the brain.
    We also know that serotonin reuptake inhibitors can inhibit the effects of psychedelic drugs because of receptor occupancy, and we have anecdotal reports that when "spiritually advanced" gurus, yogis, holy people, etc. are given LSD and other psychedelics they often have no reaction to the drugs at all. Not that they experience effects from the drugs but are able to navigate them without appearing to be affected because of their allegedly advanced "spiritual" state, but that they literally experience no effect. The 5-HT receptors apparently are likewise already occupied, it would seem.
    Yoga itself, as well as psychedelic drugs, has effects on the "default mode network," the possible seat of the "me" experience. With that ego "me-ness" ameliorated, perhaps that can account for an increased sense of empathy, as with less "me-ness" the person logically is having a greater experience of the "other" being included in "self." This in fact might be a next necessary step in evolution of the species (as many have suspected since western culture first discovered psychedelics and some eastern spiritual ideas): to mitigate and possibly eliminate the false sense of "selfness" as separate from the "other" through practices such as yoga, meditation, and psychedelics, which can break down or restructure/rewire the default mode network and false sense of separate individuality constructed culturally and socially.

    A relative of mine married a paranoid schizophrenic and one night this person put an axe through her head. She did not die but remained in a vegetative state for the next nineteen years until she eventually passed away, her parents would not give up hope that one day she would recover, against medical advice. How does this fit in with with the brain not being responsible for consciousness or personality, what was going on if anything in this girl's "mind"? Love to hear people's thoughts.

      we've known for 10,000s of years that brain damage impacts cognition.
      whats not understood is if fat protein water electricity (the brain) even if it were infinite in size and infinite in combination should be responsible for any subjectivity which seems to be without any mass-energy properties.
      the ppl who have gone beyond folk introspection and gain cultivated perfect introspection assert that brain and the body in general only condition subjectivity but does not give rise to it, and this leads to all sort of unorthodox possibilities. eg. search thukdam for a small example of results of perfect introspection

    I believe the soul is an electron.
    We have many electrons\souls, but we feel as one individual and not as many, because electrons are able to union to one electric circle.
    And maybe this is the reason why quantum state is affected by consciousness, just like your thought can create new synapses in your brain, our thoughts are able to affects electrons.
    Which one of these electrons are each one of us really is?
    maybe the wave function test is better substitute to flat heart to determine if one is really dead or not.

    The guest makes a very weak argument at 2:50 : that neuroscientists have had enough time to figure out how the brain gives rise to the mind, and since they haven't yet, this implies it doesn't. Neuroscience is still in its infancy, hindered by crude tools, ethical constraints on experiments, and the difficulty of understanding intangibles. It seems arrogant to assert that neuroscientists have had enough time.

    No single part of a car can drive. Thus, the hard problem of car driving is how driving comes into the car. It appears that specific functions in the car seem to contribute (says the stupid car mechanic) but this is no proof at all that driving is *produced* by the car; rather, the car only receives driving from outside (if it is in the respective state). How could something like matter ever *produce* something like DRIVING (which, highly abstractly, is changing location per se)??? I think the mystery of car driving will never be solved by science; it is a highly spiritual mystery which is obvious to every well-educated philosopher and meditator.

There is no context, no meaning, no reward, it is not much different than getting high on drugs. In real life you might struggle, going true a identity crises and end up getting some insight. That is how you get context, meaning and reward.
