- Collage offers surprises and interest in the surface of a painting.
In this video, I demonstrate 2 methods of using Collage in the early stages of an abstract painting. And then how to develop an integrated composition full of surface interest, gorgeous shapes, and a variety of lines. This is all done in my sketchbook and gives you ideas for a quick and effective painting exercise to try yourself.

Thank you. Very inspiring. My work is abstract using collage and mixed media. I haven't tried painting over the paper other than with pen or dots. Love layering and textures. ❤
Two, on facing pages of scrapbook: (1) assorted patterned papers (scrapbooking, photocopy, etc) placed more or less randomly; (2) strongly patterned self-made paper (stencil, etc) cut into rectangles, arranged into a strong composition.
(1) Then, seal w gloss medium. Then, black paint applied and manipulated (scrapped, waterdrops, etc) Cover some areas with white or black, use stencil, etc. Look at light and dark shapes, repeat some shapes. Yellow pencil; add colored/printed paper to side 2, scraping, etc.
Thanks for the ideas - I love abstract painting . you're awesome
Thanks so much!
Thanks for sharing, dear Judy!😀
Love whatever you do! Always informative.😊
Yay! Thank you!
Thank you so much 😊
You're welcome 😊
Excellent technique! It looks so simple, yet you create a rich cacophony of under layers, textures, and values. Additionally, I enjoyed how you added paint over some of your stencils. I've never seen anything like this. Most importantly--you know when to stop.
Thank you very much!
Absolutely beautiful. Breathtakingly rich and complex. Thank you for sharing your process!

How do you keep your art journal from falling apart?
Could you tell us what sketchbook you are using. I want my work to stay in the book.
Thank you for sharing your techniques. I was wondering at 2:00 on the video...is that zinc white? Or have you added a medium to get such a nice transparent white?
No - Titanium white and no medium
What is that spatula brush you are using? Can if be purchased or is it something you invented?
No you can buy it - it's called a Colour Shaper. Try your art supplier.
What is a “color shaper”?
It's a rubber painting tool - it spreads the paint around a bit like a squeegee.
I love this content!!! 🥰 I'm an italian contemporary artist 🔶 I've just posted a Video about one of my shocking mixed media Collages 🟥
Sounds great!
Thank you, Judy. Lots of great tips here.
