Everyone today has heard of _The Matrix_ but those who didn't see it in theaters likely don't understand the kind of event this movie was. You didn't have these multi-film epics, leading into one another with cliffhangers. The idea that people would go to the theater to "see how everything ends" was extremely novel at the time. It was received similarly to how _Infinity Wars_ and _End Game_ are today.
The saddest part of The Matrix is that it is remembered for all the wrong things. It is remembered for having participial effects, cool stunts, cool action. What it wasn't remembered for was being a epic three part story, not three movies. It was a story that began, and it was a story that ended with out changing it's self as a story.
It certainly wasn't very common. The only other trilogies to do that I guess would be Back to the Future and of course, Star Wars. Later would be LotR and I would even say the original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy.

@@castroabuful2468 yeah, Chris Nolan has never been great at action scenes although you can respect him for vastly improving the fight scenes from Batman Begins. Dark Knight had more extended less shaky scenes. Still looks worse than a lot of other action but admirable. in terms of storyline I prefer the dark Knight trilogy but Matrix is more philosophical. I was also gonna reference the Captain America trilogy

Same here! The third movie was pretty boring but this final fight made it worth it. I just think they should've sticked to the matrix itself, I find it a lot more interesting than "the real world" of Zion and all that.
"The Matrix Reloaded" (2003) is a disappointing film in my opinion. But I think "The Matrix" (1999) and "The Matrix Revolutions" (2003) are amazing movies!

Casey Thomas Yes, when Smith is finally terminated and everyone gets their identities back, you can see the restored person lying in the crater is the Oracle.
Say what you will about the Reloaded and Revolutions movies: the Neo and Smith scenes completely crush it. This scene especially with Neo walking down the street, a thunderstorm raging and epic choir music in the background, and Agent Smith literally everywhere. It's like Neo literally stepped into a nightmare- an otherwise completely unwinnable situation- and he has to finish it.

The setup for the battle was unreal. It was a bit of a disappointment but it still gave me the chills. I believe Neo should have fought every Smith, like the second movie, but on a bigger scale. Unlike then however, there was no running back.

EdgeLord666 Architects' speech has explained the whole Matrix trilogy and it's main idea. It was hard to understand because the show itself is quite complicated, But it is one of the main aspects that make this movie amazing.

That’s how it was back then... a new film, the trailer spoiled nothing, your mind was blown, a few years later it got two sequels and then was a complete trilogy and ended for good. No unending universes. Though it happens today, too. The Dark Knight Rises and War for the Planet of the Apes ended their respective trilogy fairly conclusively and thought1provokingly.

Here is the explanation for why Neo being copied kills Smith, remember these quotes from the second movie:
" You destroyed me, Mr. Anderson. After that, I understood the rules, I knew what I was supposed to do, but I didn't. I couldn't. I was compelled to stay, compelled to disobey. And now, here I stand because of you, Mr. Anderson. Because of you, I'm no longer an Agent of this system. Because of you, I've changed. I'm unplugged. A new man, so to speak. Like you, apparently, free."
and also this one:
" But, as you well know, appearances can be deceiving, which brings me back to the reason why we're here. We're not here because we're free. We're here because we're not free. There is no escaping reason; no denying purpose. Because as we both know, without purpose, we would not exist......It is purpose that created us.....Purpose that connects us.....Purpose that pulls us.......That guides us......That drives us...... It is purpose that defines us.......Purpose that binds us. .....We are here because of you, Mr Anderson. We're here to take from you what you tried to take from us.......[Attempts to copy himself into Neo]....Purpose."
Essentially Smith could not be deleted because his program's purpose was not done. Therefore his file became "corrupted", he was programmed to kill the one (albeit not knowing Neo was the one to begin with), and as "the one" became more and more powerful, Smith's corrupted file allowed him to copy himself and become powerful in response. He could "choose" not to or override deletion because his purpose was not achieved. That's why they are opposite sides of the same coin as the Architect explained. Once Neo was assimilated, the "smith" program had finally achieved "-purpose". The loop was terminated, the program could now be deleted by the main machine frame (where Neo was connected). That's what Oracle's words revealed to Neo, " Everything that has a beginning has an end Neo". Neo realized all he had to do is to achieve program Smith's purpose, which was killing Neo. This would mean the end for both of them. Of course the concept is a nod to the story of Christ, Mithra , Ra, etc. He sacrifices himself for the world so they could be reborn of their corruption.

This is the problem. The average movie goer couldn’t comprehend these parallel themes and underlying layers of the second and the third movie and therefore gave them bad reviews when it fact they were much deeper than the first film.

@@mafiaps31, I feel they'd have to speed up some sequences of fighting scenes since humans obviously can't fast enough to get on par with DBZ style fights, but also throw in a couple of slow-mo scenes for balance. So this plus what you mentioned and boom, you can potentially make a live action DBZ film work. I think casting would be a potential hurdle to overcome. Since Goku isn't Japanese (Obviously), I wonder who'd be a good person to play him (And Vegeta) and I wonder how they'd go about handling the hairstyles and SSJ transformations. My bad went off on a tangent there.... 😶

Its interesting to see how Neo fights with discipline and finesse, but Smith uses brute force without focus.
I think it's funny how in the end the greatest threat to the machines was one of their own.

One of the best choreographed fighting scenes in a movie.
I really like the parallels between smith and neo, they truly are opposite parts of the same equation. If one takes an action than the other will have an equal reaction. After three movies Neo understood this. The matrix is one big equation and he is the only part that could not be balanced until smith was unplugged. He knew that death would have an equal reaction on his counterpart. Without neo smith was unbalancing the equation, and so his programming did the only logical thing it could do, delete itself. I could be very wrong in that interpretation.

no you're spot on. The entire series is about nonduality, thesis-antithesis-synthesis. I think in a way this plays out in the first movie alone, but it definitely plays out across the trilogy. The second movie happening mostly in the matrix, the third happening mostly outside. This series is the philosophical masterpiece of our time

The most EPIC hands-on fighting scene in the ENTIRE trilogy! Just saw the films for the first time and when I got to this scene, I was crying my eyes out over Trinity’s death, but once this fight started, my eyes dried up and were completely focused on this fight.

BvS and Matrix have much cooler action than Mavel.
This will forever be the greatest final battle in the history of story telling. Literally no two characters meeting in any setting to do battle with these stakes come close to this.
The atmosphere, the challengers, the story, the setting, the history, the music, the tone, dialogue, stakes, everything here is literally a moment in time to cherish.
This is still one of my favorite fights in all of cinema. Outside of a few effects, holds up incredibly well. Remember how epic it was in theaters.
