    These pots are exactly what have helped me to change how I view myself. Instead of seeing myself as broke, I now find it easier to except and appropriate that every crack gives me value. I am not broken, but I am better than new. I am beautiful, I am art.

    Since I was a kid I've had this hobby of gluing broken pottery back together. It was like a puzzle, and the end result was even better. I'm glad this is an actual tradition!

    I’ve been a conservator for over 30 years. I’m so thrilled to have found this sweet video as it is exactly how I feel about every item I bring back to life not only for the one that cherishes it , but also as a tribute to the artist that once created the piece. It’s an honor to have been given the precious gift of understanding that broken things and people have their own unique and admirable qualities.

    That antique jar which looked even more beautiful after it was broken, reminded me of a very beloved friend of mine. He is also from Turkey but he is Kurdish. He got involved with politics at a very young age and soon he got himself into a lot of trouble. He was detained and tortured several times. If he didn't leave the country he was going to die in prison one day. You cannot imagine how an idealist, revolutionary young man in his twenties feels like a coward, feels so broken and humiliated, when he sees no other choice but to leave his country. But soon he put his pieces together. He began a new life in Germany, still being very active on the Kurdish cause. But he also learned German so well as to attend a university, while working on several day jobs to survive. Now he graduated as a social worker and he is helping many people here!
    What I really like about him is that he never romanticises what he had gone through. He sees himself neither as a victim nor as a hero. He did what he had to do and things took this turn, but he made the best out of it. Living in exile couldn't be more far from a " perfect ideal", but he is leading a meaningful and fulfilling life despite everything.
    If " breaks have philosophical merit" as Alain says so beautifully , my friend did integrate all those merits into his life. That's why I admire him deeply.

      a video can trigger memories as can so much in life, no matter how well trained ones mind is. If you don't like the statements of others then scroll on. Wasting energy being rude and trying to tell people what they are and are not or what they have learned or not is a waste of your time and energy (which clearly would be better spent improving your own self, not picking upon others)

    Imperfections, make the most beautiful creations. My mother took me to an art museum when I was very small and a bowl super cracked but beautiful held together caught my attention. and she explained to me what it was regarding Kintsugi and demonstrated to me, this is how God fixes us. And I've been in love with kintsugi ever since accepting myself in my mess

      part of the wonder about Japanese Philosophy.
      We have all been through horrible traumas in our life, but they have brought us to where we are now. I have always thought that nothing is good nor bad but thinking makes it so. so think differently about the damage that has been done to you and me, and it becomes an asset!

      +Jacob Carmichael Because you didn't live it. Just like old music was better, and chivalry was a good moral code, and life in the Belle Époque was soo much better.
      The real answer is, it wasn't. It was a life, with pros and cons, but objectively worse in many respects. However, it is in the hands of the concious to appreciate its own time when he lives it. To dwell on the past is the erroneous use of historical data and ancient knowledge. To apply it in the now is the right use of it.

    I think this also extends to how we favor a hero that first has to fall and suffer in fiction. We like seeing how suffering, a natural part of life, is overcome and as is shown in Kintsugi, not hidden or feared, but rather fully represented as a part of life, part of what gives it meaning and beauty.

    zen concepts are magnificent...as they marinate in our consciousness, they relinquish more and more realization when you least expect it, never while you seek it...rather than 'learning' in any traditional sense, the student must absorb zen via osmosis (as Alan Watts often said)...any other method will be blocked by the gate of one-up-man-ship ;)

      +The School of Life;
      First of all, thanks for your reply, it's great to know that you guys
      actually read and appreciate all those comments.
      In contrary to a great portion of the reaction on your sexting video, I
      liked the message included and the meaning and appreciation of the ‘little’
      things in life. But I belief that those ideas are mostly self-explanatory and mostly
      common sense. But the complicated and lesser known theories, like for example
      Hegel’s theory of the dialectic, have a greater need of explanation. So what I’m
      suggesting is not that those ‘other’ videos are bad in any shape or form, but
      that your creative power should - in my humble opinion and of course with the greatest
      politeness - be concentrated on the more ‘complex’ topics.
      Anyhow, that’s of course just my opinion and the attempt to form some kind of
      constructive criticism.
      Keep up the amazing work!

      @bolivar1789 8 лет назад +1

      +Max Hillebrand
      Hi there Max! I hope you're doing very well. I wanted to tell you why in my humble opinion those videos about sex are indeed extremely important. Take the one about the sexual fantasies of others for example. So there was this girl talking about her experiences with other girls and there was a woman who said that she would like to see two men making love etc. Well, if you are from a country where homosexuality is accepted, then this may not say anything to you. But imagine a teenager from Turkey, from a country where homosexuals are seen as sick, perverted sinners. If he happens to see this video, where just common people in another part of the world talk about homosexuality as something so normal and sane, it may even stop him from committing suicide! Unfortunately there is a high rate of teenagers killing themselves because of isolation and feelings of guilt for their sexual orientation in Turkey. As in many other parts of the world.
      So I just wanted to tell you that what may seem as common sense or superficial to you, may help someone else immensely or even save his life. One wise word you hear at the right time of your life can change the entire course of your life.
      I wish you all the best!

    Kintsugi reminds me of artists' glorification of suffering, which might be true! Let's break ourselves and hope the cracks get filled in with gold!

    A wonderful concept in an age obsessed with outer perfection.

    Once, I noticed that even flies clean their eyes and wings. I saw it many times before until only recently I realised the importance of fighting chaos and to preserve some consistency as life is merely an aberration: in the end the temporary arrangement will not prevail.
    Our duty to preserve our existence to the best of our ability is reflected in the care it takes to put back together the pieces of a broken pot. Using gold means victory of life and order over death and chaos and annihilation..

    I love how this video related to your previous one on Wabi-Sabi. It made me extremely excited to recognise the term when used on this great video. Keep up the teaching, you make adults feel like primary school children on the first day of school!
