Interestingly with me when I first discovered TMV back in the early 2000s it made me want to pick up a paintbrush and just create art any way that I could. Their creative energy filled the creative part of my mind, and I've never looked back since. I'm still making wild experimental art 20 years later, and honestly I have The Mars Volta to thank for that.
I'd agree that Omar is pretty visionary. Prolific too... so many solo albums. I'd recommend 'Xenophanes' as a segue over from TMV, it's like the Mars Volta album that wasn't.
the whole bass on this album is hypnotizing! going back for relistens, the bass is like paper clip that holds everything together in most songs. it just goes up from here with the song quality imo! great reactions
Let's all wish a speedy recovery to TMV's amazing bassist Juan Alderete who's been recovering from a life-altering brain injury (bicycle accident) for over a year now. There's a gofundme page for those interested. Also, Juan has a youtube channel called "Pedals and Effects", which is well worth checking out!
The bass in this album is what brought me to switch to bass as my main instrument over guitar when this album came out. As others have mentioned Juan Alderete is a legend and he has some really cool videos about his love of pedals. He's recently been in a motorcycle accident is recovering from a traumatic brain injury and had to learn to walk and talk again. I've been following his social media accounts and he's just started to pick his bass back up again, it's very emotional. The 2nd half of this album, I'd call their more experimental, that's why its so divisive. The next track, Askepios, is probably the most experimental on the album :)
I love this track. Sums up the album well. One of the hardest bands to pick a best album, but Bedlam is so bloody heavy, produced so well and Cedric's vocals are so catchy. Its experimental music with a vision thats cohesive. "there's a place where this depth charge ignites" those lyrics give me chills the way he sings it
i learned playing guitar with bands like pearl jam, at the drive in or smashing pumpkins... after a while i felt the urge to move more into experimental/post/prog rock and the mars volta just been there paralell to this development only aside to tool from a perspective on the level of impact. though i have close to none cultural touchingpoints with those people and been grown up like 10000km away, all in their music from the energy, the dynamics and drive, the dissonance, the creativity and complexety up to the dramatic and cedrics sometimes close to theatralic singing but also the humor and joy seem all just fit into myself so well, like the picture of me infront of a mirror...
Juan Alderete, the bass player on this and the last 2 albums, has his own RUclips channel you should check out if you feel like it sometime! It's called pedals and effects
You missed a grand opportunity to start off your impression of the song with something along the lines of "yeah I really enjoyed this track ****BECAUSE**** "
Probably my favorite on the album

I can see that. They would be on my stereo in an art studio too

Yes, please. Thomas who plays drums on this recorded that before Octahedron under the impression it was new Volta.
@@giovannidiaz4487 For sure, Thomas Pridgen is amazing

Juan Aldarete and his bass playing made me pick up the bass. I am so excited that you have fallen for the Volta!
cool!

He played with Paul Gilbert in Racer X. He's awesome
Are you planning to do the later albums chronologically after this one?
Yes
This is not one of my favorites on the album, but it's a good song, with highlight moments (like the bass and arrangements you mentioned)
Cool, thanks for your feedback.

?
Joke about Cedric's recurring distorted/deep "because" in the verses of this track
