The strap adds too much length and you have to pull it across your body to get the door shut firmly it’s easier to reach when the door is open but is a pain to actually close with.
The Flux Capacitor used to be mounted under the rear quarter panel as well but they moved it inside behind the driver to allow for adjustments as needed. You can still buy flux capacitors at the auto store next to the blinker fluid.

My father's first job was making doors for the original DeLorean. I took him to a comicon once and he was so excited to see that they had a DeLorean on display and he was very proud to tell everyone that he "probably helped make that door"

I feel like opening the door with the handle and then reaching for the strap to pull it closed makes more sense... something with slack on your end should not be used to open something. It just seems backwards. But reaching for it, since the door opens upwards, makes sense since it would require less stretching to get to than the handle.
The reason they moved the strap is even more interesting... the gullwing door would twist over time by pulling from the original since it was not centered!
I mean it makes sense the handle is a solid grip so it’s much better for closing the door while the strap is good for limiting the door from opening too fast while keeping it loose.
I like to use the strap to open the door 3/4 then the handle for the final push. However, closing, this is where it gets really interesting. I strap for 1/8th of the closure, then I pull the handle for another 1/5th, finally, I grab the strap for to complete the full 3/4 and handle the rest of the way.

The SV2 (Delorean) uses straps...the Bricklin SV1 Used Hydroelectric to open and close the doors (and most switched to air doors to open and close the doors) and with the air doors on the SV1 Gullwing doors...you actually get the same exact whoosh sounds as in the opening and closing of the Gullwing doors in the BTTF trilogy movies.
Personally, I would do it vice versa because the strap allows me to close the door without straining and the handle allows me to have full control of the door on the way out so I don’t door ding anyone
The main reason for the change is because the strap was now put more into a central location to evenly close the door and have both latches hit the striker at the same time. With it around the handle, yes it tore up the leather but the door would bind a bit, kinda of twist you could say and the door would close crooked causing the front latch to hit first and could damage the striker pin.
The strap eats up the leather on the handle. That was one reason for the change.

In my opinion hes using it right. The strap prevents door damage due to fast opening . The handle can be reached like you see in the video.

You do it perfectly. The stress on using the handle for the whole pull ends up damaging the handle. the strap is much stronger
