83 was a great Bowie tour, but unfortunately the quality of the footage from it wasn't that high. I prefer the 2000 live BBC Radio version to the older live versions of this song mostly just due to the higher quality of the recording, though I enjoy the stage performance on these older versions.
The vibe that I get is that the song is about sex used to get ahead in the Hollywood film business and those who leverage their positions of power to get sex from up and coming talent. Also I believe him holding the skull as if he's having a conversation with it is a reference to Shakespeare's "Hamlet" where there's a similar scene.
he did two shows here in Vancouver, at the Pacific Coliseum, I was at them both, he was taping his Serious Moonlight tour... Peter Gabriel opened and was great (also The Tubes, meh). songs like Let's Dance, China Girl, and Modern Dance were the big hits at this show but Bowie mixed in some oldies like this song so he could be all theatrically-ish for the show. not my fav Bowie phase, in fact we kinda departed ways after this show, but I loved the Cat People tune and some of the oldies. edit.... just looked up there were 3 shows, not just the 2 I saw..... so Meatloaf was right after all..... 2 out of 3 ain't bad.
Yes three shows. I saw the BC Place concert. Still the best concert I ever saw and I've seen a lot of great ones. In 1983, David Bowie played BC Place and the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver. This was part of his Serious Moonlight tour, considered his longest, largest and most successful tour ever. It started in May, 1983 and ended Dec. 8, 1983. Bowie played BC Place in August and then in September he returned to Vancouver to play two shows at the Pacific Coliseum. This was to produce the music tour video, including an introduction shoot to the video on Main Street.
The song was written in 1973, this live video released 1983
