To everyone asking where you can get them, their official website seems to be down at the moment (it worked earlier this week), however the cool new $1 is sold out there anyway. I got mine on eBay for $5 which I think is reasonable. There are various other sites that charge a lot more. This isn't sponsored or anything by the way.

As a Norwegian, I am dissapointed that there were no mention of Amundsen, or the Norwegian expeditions. They were the first to reach the center, and beat Scott.
As a non-Norwegian, I can tell you that nobody cares.
It is OK to tell a story about Canadian animals without discussing Samuel de Champlain, or Leif Erikson, or the Bering Straight Land Bridge.

@@BatCaveOz yeah but the event was historic
@@BatCaveOz Greetings, non-Norwegian here, and I do care. Antartica is not part of Britian and as such a curecny focusing on its history should take insperation from everyone who took part in mapping out this continent, not just the British.

That series looks pretty Anglocentric. Nothing about the French, the Norwegians, the Argentinians, and the Chileans.
Yup. Argentina and chile have so much history with the continent, possibly the two countries more involved with it, yet not a single mention to their existence
Euro reigns. Coz Chile and Argentina were the former Spanish possessions.
This whole thing seems like English guys patting themselves on the back.
Russians too. Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen (yeah, this one had a German ancestry haha) and Mikhail Lazarev were the ones who discovered Antarctica in the first place
Why does none of these notes depict Roald Amundsen? The leader of the first crew to arrive on the north pole. Instead they have one that depicts the second one? I know they died and should be honored because they did reach the south pole too. But atleast give them both a banknote. Not only the second guy. This dosent make any sence. As a Norwegian, i am really dissappointed, feels kinda like british bias. Only depicting brits and new-zelanders.
dont you mean south?
They also don't depict the first person to be born in Antarctica
@@franchufranchu119 they did

@@iDunnoMC: He probably means south, but Amundsen was also the first person to properly document his presence on the North Pole. Then again, he went to the North pole in an airship, so one might consider it cheating.
He was in the same place attempting the same thing as Falcon Scott, they could only choose one from that exact time (as there weren’t enough notes) so they went for Falcon Scott
The great auks scientific name was pinguinus impennis, and when penguins were first discovered, explorers thought they looked similar to the greak auk, and so named them penguins after the great auks scientific name, I assume that is why the great auk is on the back of one of the notes

The name Arctic comes from the Greek word Arktos, which means bear. The bears in question are not polar, but celestial: the Great and the Little Bear, constellations visible only in the Northern Hemisphere. Antarktikos - Antarctica - the opposite of “the land of the bear” and is situated on the other side of the planet.
When I was younger and just starting high school my dad gave me this really interesting book about sailing journeys throughout history. Both of our favourite happened to be Captain franks worsleys tale, as it was well described and it demonstrated relentless skill and effort. I nearly forgot all about that book until I saw this and thought how I read a tale of people in the ice sailing for rescue and then it happened that you included them!!! So cool, and I love these random facts of information that you present to us! 😀

On the 5 dollar bank not it should be Tom Crean he was on 3 polar expeditions including sir Robert falcon Scott and ernest shackleton. On Scott's voyage he was sent back with a sick member and walked 50 miles in 23 hours. During shackleton's voyage he went with shackleton's crew to elephant island and was 1 of 3 people to make the hike across elephant island to safety
I agree
The Welsh name for Great Auk is where we get the word Penguin,
It was the first animal in England to be classified as an endangered species with laws protecting it.
Wow they are amazing BUT I think that it's unacceptable to have Antarctic dollars and not put the face of The Norwegian explorer Amudssen who discovered Antarctica

I hope people can appreciate how much time goes into creating one of your videos! This was a fascinating one. Can’t say I’ve ever even thought about Antarctica even having any particular currency.
I think there is a station at the Antarctica with a couple of ATM's but I don't they have their own currency.
Chris, you never cease to impress. Excellent video!

18 minutes after you upload, I get on to binge watch! What are the odds of that?
Please keep banknote videos coming! I love them
Hey Chris, what would you recommend me to do. I’m starting to collect bank notes?
Go to your high-street travel money bureau. Start with low value notes - Australian $5, Canadian $5 (two of my favourites), some US dollars, and just work your way from there. You can ask them for notes in pristine condition, and they can order them in for you too. It's a lot cheaper than eBay or anywhere as you only pay face value. Good luck :)
What country is a must have?
@@faisalpresentz I love Canada and Australia, but it's personal preferece. :D

Great video! I'm enjoying many of your videos. I scrolled through many of the comments, but I probably missed some, but in case it hasn't been mentioned, I wanted to clarify that Disney Dollars are not really fantasy notes. They are scrip that still can be used at Disney and Disney Stores.
The Antarctic dollar, occasionally called the Antarctican dollar, is the national currency of the Federated States of Antarctica. At the present time, it is pegged to the United States Dollar. However, negotiations are being held within the GAMA to determine a universal value of currency within the Antarctic continent.
The Antarctic dollar uses the decimal system, consisting of 100 equal cents (symbol ¢). In another division, there are 1,000 mills (Symbol ₥) to one dollar. This unit is used for tax purposes and not for general use as there is no coin denomination in that value.
Wait... Since when does Antarctica have bank notes?
I didn't even know there was even some kind of Antarctic banknote
I didn't know about Antarctic banknotes until I watched this. I seem to learn more from your videos than sometimes in school! :)
This is amazing! I had absolutely no idea! Thanks for sharing.
It's very disappointing that they don't include some references to Gabriel de Castilla, the discoverer of Antarctica and the San Telmo ship crew, who where the first to land on it.

At work in the USA we checked every bill over 1$ for the colored strip which only appears under UV light. You can also see a paper bar inside the bill if you hold it up to the light that says what denomination it is.

Love ur videos! Merry Christmas And a happy new year!
one thing that really bugs me is the typeface, it looks a bit off on a backnote
Hey, Chris! Great video! How are the kitties?
The Great Auk's taxonomic name is _Pinguinus_ sp. Southern Hemisphere's penguins were called that because of the similarities between the two kinds of birds.
So well done and interesting! Thank You, Chris! : )
Why is Roald Amundsen on these notes?
He was the first to reach middle.
The problem is he isn’t here
I immediately dislike that they went the colonial route displaying Brits etc ... the whole mystic and beauty of this continent is that it is *not* anyone one cultures, *not* permanently inhabited by man. We should continue to preserve its neutrality.
R E S E A R C H overrules all.
Haha I'm English and in Thailand for Christmas, I'll have to have to have a look at the Bart note. Cool video Chris 🤟

My dad has got the 0 dollar bank note from somewhere
Hey Chris Keep making such amazing content ♥️
I collect currency of countries I've been to I have polish zloty, American dollers, Chinese yuan and Gibraltar pounds. Interesting thing about the Gibraltar notes and coins they use British sterling but have there own special notes that can only be used there. They also still use the old style pound coins.
Finally, good pay for the penguins
Chris, I think the cost thing is keeping with the "realism" of the notes. You couldn't buy a 50 dollar US bill for one dollar, so why should you be able to buy a 50 Antarctica dollar note for a buck? I'm not saying I agree with this policy, just trying to explain my take on the rationale. Happy/Merry Christmas!
The great auk was native to parts of Britain before its extinction, which might be an explanation for it featuring on the note celebrating British Antarctic exploration/territory. They’re related to puffins!
