@@csharpcoffee this. As someone that grew up with Lord of the Rings and later enjoyed reading Game of Thrones Mushoku Tensei is the first piece of fantasy literature that has ever touched me as much. I whole heartedly believe that Mushoku is the best japanese Fantasy show/book/series ever.

I actually never watched Attack on Titan specifically because it was so mainstream and I thought I wouldn't enjoy it. Then one day I got bored and decided to give it a shot... *It was one of the best shots I've ever gave*
I have the exact same reason why I didn't like AOT. Everyone and their mother were telling me it was the best show ever created so I went in with extremely high expectations. And the show... was good. But it was just that. Just good. Not groundbreakingly fantastic, not amazingly mindblowing just... Good. Which sucks. I wish it wasn't constantly shoved in my face as "the best show you'll ever see, mate, trust me, bro". One day I'll go back to it and rewatch it with a much more clear head and see if I'll rediscover it.

It kinda physically hurt me when someone said kaguya sama 8/10 when its my fav anime of all time. So I didn't want to get in that stage where good shows seem 8/10 because you have watched "too much anime" and there was "nothing special in that show". I feel like the issue with a greatest of all time list is you have to consider both how good they actually are and the legacy they’ve had while still having a thorough representation of most genres. The amount of snubs by that metric is insane. Shounen may seem overrepresented but in terms of impact, there were still a lot that arguably depending on your view earned a spot (although MHA is definitely not one of them). The sheer lack of romance anime is also pretty crazy. At least some of Fruit’s Basket, Clannad or Your Lie in April probably should’ve been there. I would argue Madoka Magica should have had a large enough impact to also earn a spot even though the magical girl genre is pretty small relatively speaking and Sailor Moon kinda paved the way for it. At the end of of the day, I kinda feel like a top 25 all time is near impossible to get right because there are so many factors to consider and even then, how do you rank series from different genres against each other when the only thing they have in common is being animated?
Then they should seperate genres and make a list with each one of them. So for example: Top 10 romance anime, top 10 comedy anime, top 10 fantasy anime, top 10 mecha anime, top 10 action anime etc. That would be more fair. That would be a very long list though. In that case maybe they can reduce it to top 5 or even top 3 for each genre.
MHA definetely deserves spot somewhere at the top, maybe not 25 but 50 for sure. Not only it's great, it stood the test of time as one of the Shonen Jump''s long lasting shows. Isn't Fruti's Basket poorly written cringe clown fiesta though?

Mark my words as a Light Novel reader, if the Mushoku Tensei anime can keep up the same level of quality then by the time it ends it will absolutely deserve to be on this kind of list and will be the greatest Isekai of all time. The story is just so fucking good and the writing is fantastic too. The author does a great job of balancing major story elements and hype moments with calm slice of life moments that flesh out the characters and make the world feel very alive.
Mushoku Tensei fans need to recognize that Re:Zero deserves to be in the conversation. I've read the entire Light Novel series for Mushoku Tensei, and I'm up to date on the Re:Zero web novel. And I simply prefer Re:Zero at this point. Arc 6 of Re:Zero is better than literally any moment in Mushoku Tensei. And frankly, most of the characters in MT are pretty one dimensional in comparison. Re:Zero's top 20 characters are far, far more complex in comparison to MT's top 20 characters. Mushoku Tensei's world building is fantastic. But you have to keep in mind that was always a main focus of MT, meanwhile Re:Zero feels like a psychological thriller more than an adventure series. But when the author of Re:Zero wants to focus on world building, he does amazingly well, like in Arc 7 of Re:Zero.

Violet Evergarden made me realise that the most mundane thing in the world, the letters and words we type and write, can have an impact far greater than I can define. For that I will be my number 1, even though Your Name is a cinematic masterpiece, even though Demon Slayer had the best animation I have ever seen, I will always remember that letters on a page change the world on a daily basis, for every one who reads them, and only that one show taught me that lesson, and it leaves me bittersweet.
Demon slayer dosen't have The best Animation at all. It's because of top tier compositing and artwork and effects Animation and also making good use of CGI backgrounds. But The Animation itself is not near the greatest at all

If we wanted to add shoujo or a shoujo romance fruits basket should be on that list or I’m biased towards Snow White with the red hair personally. There is so much amazing shoujo out there- madoka, yona, etc. Some queer shows would be nice too there are a couple really brilliant ones(I wish there was more but most queer rep is mainly in manga). Violet evergarden technically is for me is pretty brilliant but I’m not sure. Princesses principle has some brilliant writing. The dragon pilot was a surprisingly real show. Hinamatsuri also has really well done writing. It’s seinen but it isn’t only action.

But GoT had 2 average seasons and 2 terrible ones, so almost half of the show is not good. AoT has been great so far, there are like 9 chapters left, which is like 10% of the anime length.

The show is about why we choose to compete, and how people feel or react when they can no longer compete. Do you play to bring honor to your family? Do you play because it's the only way to take care of your family? Or do you play just because it's fun. Most sports anime focus on the journey to becoming the champion. Ping Pong essentially treats that aspect with lower importance so that the previous stuff I've mention gets to shine brightly. Hopefully that answers it for you.
I actually rewatched all of Ouran a couple weeks back because it's finally on Netflix, and it stands up pretty well. By comparison, I rewatched Kaichou wa Maid-sama fairly recently, and it was almost painful to watch.

Just a little but salty that Kaguya-sama isn't on this list unless I blacked out while watching this. Has to be one of the best romance comedy shows to come in the last few years especially with how well animated that show is and how well it translated from Manga to Anime. A-1 Pictures knocked it out the park with the adaptation.
Seeing code geass on this list made me feel good as it’s often forgotten due to its age at this point as well as the fact that it aired near death note. Which is extra funny considering most people who Stan for death note only reference or remember the first half. It’s like the whole world forgot there was a second half.
To be fair though, as a massive code geass fan, i feel like us fans conveniently forget all the bad shit about code geass too because the ending was so amazing. Maybe you liked it, but the whole subplot about charles and lelouche's mother wanting to do...something??? to heaven still never made any sense to me, and all the stupid tonal shifts from war crimes to light hearted filler school scenes were so jarring, looking back.
@@tb4076 id def disagree on that. ive never seen a single discussion about code geass that doesnt prefice how bad the second season was over all. Including this one. Meanwhile people will always talk up deathnote and remember it fondly while pretending that after L+Ratio the show skips to the final scene. Ask most people what happened after that and they wont be able to tell you. But with code geass even its biggest haters could tell you what happened in season 2. Anyways, with season 2 it still remains my favorite anime.

Glad you didn't mind Samurai Champloo. It's personally my favorite anime, mostly cause the music and feelings with it resonated with me so much that it shaped the beats and tunes I listen to to this day.

Everyone is failing to realize that it's not someone who watched anime in the 2000's , but it's someone who watched anime on Netflix in 2016-2018 and only a couple outside Netflix that was something that they watched because they heard about them from their friend who ACTUALLY watches different anime and gave some personal recommendations And I guess they threw in a couple to ward off haters (something involving demons or something, I dunno)
I agree i wouldnt call DBZ greatest even if i grew up with it in the 90's, but i would definitely call it one of the most influential mangas/animes of all time. It affected and inspired many biggest manga authors (like Oda) who in turn inspired many other authors (like Horikoshi). And tbh OG dragonball (pre Z) is still great both anime and manga. especially at what it tried to be.

They really shouldnt put anything that isnt done on a best of all time list especially if it has less than 75% of the story done. Any incomplete show can ruin be ruined and there are few shows so good/iconic that I think they can overcome that. Jujutsu Kaisen, Mushokou Tensei, Kaguya can completely fall apart for one reason or another and I would completely forget they exist outside of just shrugging and feeling bad at wasted potential. Also FLCL deserves to be on the list for soundtrack alone, everything else is bonus

Its not even that good. FMAB is a mediocre bogstandard shonen anime that caters to the masses while having a slight western appeal (that slight western appeal was all it needed for it to blow up. Just look at how popular MHA got when it first came out. Superheroes appeal to westerners thanks to Marvel movies)

I don't usually comment on this since I don't usually want to start a shitstorm, but I guess it's the day, I recently watched both seasons and I genuinely don't understand why it's regarded as the pinnacle of anime, I mean, I liked the music, even more the visuals, but... the first episodes were a slog and I felt like the good part truly begins with Nanachi... which is 11 out of 13 of the first season, what. The 3 first episodes takes all the "not-to-do" things that people say about exposition and checks the list, I like Reg and Nanachi, I can't stand Riko nor I understand what's so special about her, the adventure aspect is good, mystery is good, fucked up antagonist is good, setting is awesome, story... I don't know, I tried to like it, and still I have a uneasiness in the back of my mind about some things shown since they are little kids. Oh, it's not be a killjoy, It's fine if people love it, I just don't think it lives to the standing of the "critics darling" and the issues should be talked about or at least dismissed
One thing I've noticed watching you, Garnt; when it comes to shoujo and josei anime, you and I have very similar tastes. When it comes to shounen and seinen anime, you and I are basically on opposite ends of the planet. XD
Only problem with this list is that it's the top 25 anime of "all time" list and putting all time really sets you up for failure because there will always be people to disagree and IGN isn't exactly known for good reviews on media.
Oda is a fan of Akira Toriyama. In a Jump interview, when asked about his inspirations, he said, "I mirrored many traits and tropes for Luffy off of Son Goku. By far the manga that inspired me the most was Dragon Ball and I think the same could be said for many other mangaka.
This reminds me of the writing professor I had in freshman year who chose anime to be the medium for people to write about because it was in season 1 or 2 at the time, and so all the non anime fans watched and wrote about that and then I wrote about Gintama and another person wrote about Devil is a Parttimer and suddenly you could tell who the weebs were
It really was a list made by a 90s kid. I know because I was one and most of that list is also on my top 100 somewhere. I'd say that it is more of a list of all time popular anime, but not of all time. Theres simply too much anime to make a good list that can hold any show. They should either make a list by genre or some other limiting factor.
I just watched Baccano first time this week (after rewatching the ancient sub v dub argument from TT) - the non linear timeline and multitude of characters are fukken awesome, feels diff drom 90% of anime. Hidden gem
My guess would be Legend of the Galactic Heroes isn’t there because the people putting the list together haven’t seen it. But benefit of the doubt... it’s a list of shows, and technically Legend of the Galactic Heroes isn’t a show, it’s a very long running OVA series. But if it’d played here on TV like a show it’d probably be there. Given how heavy leaning that list is to Cartoon Network, I’m almost surprised there’s no Lupin the Third or Outlaw Star on there.

And the show... was good. But it was just that. Just good. Not groundbreakingly fantastic, not amazingly mindblowing just... Good. Which sucks. I wish it wasn't constantly shoved in my face as "the best show you'll ever see, mate, trust me, bro". One day I'll go back to it and rewatch it with a much more clear head and see if I'll rediscover it.

It kinda physically hurt me when someone said kaguya sama 8/10 when its my fav anime of all time. So I didn't want to get in that stage where good shows seem 8/10 because you have watched "too much anime" and there was "nothing special in that show".

I feel like the issue with a greatest of all time list is you have to consider both how good they actually are and the legacy they’ve had while still having a thorough representation of most genres. The amount of snubs by that metric is insane. Shounen may seem overrepresented but in terms of impact, there were still a lot that arguably depending on your view earned a spot (although MHA is definitely not one of them). The sheer lack of romance anime is also pretty crazy. At least some of Fruit’s Basket, Clannad or Your Lie in April probably should’ve been there. I would argue Madoka Magica should have had a large enough impact to also earn a spot even though the magical girl genre is pretty small relatively speaking and Sailor Moon kinda paved the way for it. At the end of of the day, I kinda feel like a top 25 all time is near impossible to get right because there are so many factors to consider and even then, how do you rank series from different genres against each other when the only thing they have in common is being animated?
Then they should seperate genres and make a list with each one of them. So for example: Top 10 romance anime, top 10 comedy anime, top 10 fantasy anime, top 10 mecha anime, top 10 action anime etc. That would be more fair. That would be a very long list though. In that case maybe they can reduce it to top 5 or even top 3 for each genre.

Mark my words as a Light Novel reader, if the Mushoku Tensei anime can keep up the same level of quality then by the time it ends it will absolutely deserve to be on this kind of list and will be the greatest Isekai of all time. The story is just so fucking good and the writing is fantastic too. The author does a great job of balancing major story elements and hype moments with calm slice of life moments that flesh out the characters and make the world feel very alive.
The best isekai is coming next year if they animate it correctly 💀.

Mushoku Tensei fans need to recognize that Re:Zero deserves to be in the conversation. I've read the entire Light Novel series for Mushoku Tensei, and I'm up to date on the Re:Zero web novel. And I simply prefer Re:Zero at this point. Arc 6 of Re:Zero is better than literally any moment in Mushoku Tensei. And frankly, most of the characters in MT are pretty one dimensional in comparison. Re:Zero's top 20 characters are far, far more complex in comparison to MT's top 20 characters.
Mushoku Tensei's world building is fantastic. But you have to keep in mind that was always a main focus of MT, meanwhile Re:Zero feels like a psychological thriller more than an adventure series. But when the author of Re:Zero wants to focus on world building, he does amazingly well, like in Arc 7 of Re:Zero.
@@jackmayor3574 Mushoku Tensei solos unfortunately, I prefer the slice of life and more normal aspect of MT. I like the whole building a family and actually redoing life which most isekai never even attempt since the point is the power fantasy stuff.

Violet Evergarden made me realise that the most mundane thing in the world, the letters and words we type and write, can have an impact far greater than I can define. For that I will be my number 1, even though Your Name is a cinematic masterpiece, even though Demon Slayer had the best animation I have ever seen, I will always remember that letters on a page change the world on a daily basis, for every one who reads them, and only that one show taught me that lesson, and it leaves me bittersweet.

If we wanted to add shoujo or a shoujo romance fruits basket should be on that list or I’m biased towards Snow White with the red hair personally. There is so much amazing shoujo out there- madoka, yona, etc. Some queer shows would be nice too there are a couple really brilliant ones(I wish there was more but most queer rep is mainly in manga). Violet evergarden technically is for me is pretty brilliant but I’m not sure. Princesses principle has some brilliant writing. The dragon pilot was a surprisingly real show. Hinamatsuri also has really well done writing. It’s seinen but it isn’t only action.

But GoT had 2 average seasons and 2 terrible ones, so almost half of the show is not good. AoT has been great so far, there are like 9 chapters left, which is like 10% of the anime length.

The show is about why we choose to compete, and how people feel or react when they can no longer compete. Do you play to bring honor to your family? Do you play because it's the only way to take care of your family? Or do you play just because it's fun.
Most sports anime focus on the journey to becoming the champion. Ping Pong essentially treats that aspect with lower importance so that the previous stuff I've mention gets to shine brightly.

I actually rewatched all of Ouran a couple weeks back because it's finally on Netflix, and it stands up pretty well. By comparison, I rewatched Kaichou wa Maid-sama fairly recently, and it was almost painful to watch.

Has to be one of the best romance comedy shows to come in the last few years especially with how well animated that show is and how well it translated from Manga to Anime. A-1 Pictures knocked it out the park with the adaptation.

Seeing code geass on this list made me feel good as it’s often forgotten due to its age at this point as well as the fact that it aired near death note. Which is extra funny considering most people who Stan for death note only reference or remember the first half. It’s like the whole world forgot there was a second half.
To be fair though, as a massive code geass fan, i feel like us fans conveniently forget all the bad shit about code geass too because the ending was so amazing. Maybe you liked it, but the whole subplot about charles and lelouche's mother wanting to do...something??? to heaven still never made any sense to me, and all the stupid tonal shifts from war crimes to light hearted filler school scenes were so jarring, looking back.
@@tb4076 id def disagree on that. ive never seen a single discussion about code geass that doesnt prefice how bad the second season was over all. Including this one. Meanwhile people will always talk up deathnote and remember it fondly while pretending that after L+Ratio the show skips to the final scene. Ask most people what happened after that and they wont be able to tell you. But with code geass even its biggest haters could tell you what happened in season 2.
Anyways, with season 2 it still remains my favorite anime.

It affected and inspired many biggest manga authors (like Oda) who in turn inspired many other authors (like Horikoshi). It’s very Hard deny the impact Dbz has had on the Anime industry and in fans everywhere even though in terms of plot and characters yeah we could probably find a better substitute

They really shouldnt put anything that isnt done on a best of all time list especially if it has less than 75% of the story done. Any incomplete show can ruin be ruined and there are few shows so good/iconic that I think they can overcome that. Jujutsu Kaisen, Mushokou Tensei, Kaguya can completely fall apart for one reason or another and I would completely forget they exist outside of just shrugging and feeling bad at wasted potential. Also FLCL deserves to be on the list for soundtrack alone, everything else is bonus

The most hilarious part is that the Gacha game made with Sunrise has a mad scientist make a bunch of clones of Lelouch based on pairings in the R2 timeline. Including Lelouch only son Elzero being a clone of him and Suzaku.

Its not even that good. FMAB is a mediocre bogstandard shonen anime that caters to the masses while having a slight western appeal (that slight western appeal was all it needed for it to blow up. Just look at how popular MHA got when it first came out. Superheroes appeal to westerners thanks to Marvel movies)

I don't usually comment on this since I don't usually want to start a shitstorm, but I guess it's the day, I recently watched both seasons and I genuinely don't understand why it's regarded as the pinnacle of anime, I mean, I liked the music, even more the visuals, but... the first episodes were a slog and I felt like the good part truly begins with Nanachi... which is 11 out of 13 of the first season, what.
The 3 first episodes takes all the "not-to-do" things that people say about exposition and checks the list, I like Reg and Nanachi, I can't stand Riko nor I understand what's so special about her, the adventure aspect is good, mystery is good, fucked up antagonist is good, setting is awesome, story... I don't know, I tried to like it, and still I have a uneasiness in the back of my mind about some things shown since they are little kids.
Oh, it's not be a killjoy, It's fine if people love it, I just don't think it lives to the standing of the "critics darling" and the issues should be talked about or at least dismissed

One thing I've noticed watching you, Garnt; when it comes to shoujo and josei anime, you and I have very similar tastes. When it comes to shounen and seinen anime, you and I are basically on opposite ends of the planet. XD
Only problem with this list is that it's the top 25 anime of "all time" list and putting all time really sets you up for failure because there will always be people to disagree and IGN isn't exactly known for good reviews on media.
I have to say that the English Dub cast for Cowboy Bebop was absolutely amazing everyone can admit they had a dream cast

Oda is a fan of Akira Toriyama. In a Jump interview, when asked about his inspirations, he said, "I mirrored many traits and tropes for Luffy off of Son Goku. By far the manga that inspired me the most was Dragon Ball and I think the same could be said for many other mangaka.
Because the Dragon Ball manga is one of the best. Toriyama knows how to draw movement in a comic
This reminds me of the writing professor I had in freshman year who chose anime to be the medium for people to write about because it was in season 1 or 2 at the time, and so all the non anime fans watched and wrote about that and then I wrote about Gintama and another person wrote about Devil is a Parttimer and suddenly you could tell who the weebs were
It really was a list made by a 90s kid. I know because I was one and most of that list is also on my top 100 somewhere. I'd say that it is more of a list of all time popular anime, but not of all time. Theres simply too much anime to make a good list that can hold any show. They should either make a list by genre or some other limiting factor.
I just watched Baccano first time this week (after rewatching the ancient sub v dub argument from TT) - the non linear timeline and multitude of characters are fukken awesome, feels diff drom 90% of anime. Hidden gem
My guess would be Legend of the Galactic Heroes isn’t there because the people putting the list together haven’t seen it. But benefit of the doubt... it’s a list of shows, and technically Legend of the Galactic Heroes isn’t a show, it’s a very long running OVA series. But if it’d played here on TV like a show it’d probably be there.
Given how heavy leaning that list is to Cartoon Network, I’m almost surprised there’s no Lupin the Third or Outlaw Star on there.
