I have a formula for ratings just because I'm a engineer, but I still have a weighting for enjoyment because it can honestly push something up or down a point or two
18:06 this is why i take both enjoyment and x factor into account when rating shows What i do is i have an objective rating, which includes the art and animation, music, writing etc. And then have a subjective rating which includes enjoyment, x factor, staying power etc. And averaging those together i decided what score a show should be for me On some occasions however, the subjective side is way too strong and it renders the objective side null, but that rarely happens

man its fun to see garnt opening up his little time capsule. kinda wanna see what my shitty taste was like and 15 years ago or what my shitty taste is now 15 years from now. great vid to look back on😝
I just realised I started properly watching anime 3 years ago when I was 17, same age as you when you started your MAL. And I think all my opinions rn are good and I'm pretty comfortable in my tastes, but now I'm wondering if I'm gonna be looking back at my MAL in a decade and wondering what the hell was going on in my head.
2:00 7 is also the number most chosen between 10 because they dont want to seem rude to the person asking (only irl). It also is because people make things to be good, and if most things are'nt mediocre than the average is higher than 5 (the median i think its called). So if something is mediocre it is actually below average.
bro I had to come to the device, I was listening in the background, but about the anohana - SAME, SO FUCKING SAME. I'm 28 now, but this anime has a special place in my heart, from back when I was edgy, outsider teenager. Ofc it's not 9/10, but it is in my nostalgia rotten head too. Also Clannad was one of my first animes. Now I am awaiting a baby myself and sometimes get a flashback from the anime haha. good times...
2:20 True for the most part, but sometimes I’ll give something a 6 or 7, finish it, and lower it because of a poor ending. Or, I’ll initially give it a score and lower it later after thinking about it more/ seeing other shows. Score inflation is why I’ve set a cap on how many 10s and 9s I give relative to how many shows I’ve watched. Some shows feel like 10s in the moment, but are actually just empty hype (cough Demon Slayer Swordsmith Arc cough)
I liked Rahxephon a lot better than EVA tbh. It was just a complete story, that wasn't stuck in it's own pretentious backside. It was exactly what I wanted eva to be.
for a season's worth of content slapped into a couple episodes at the end of a season, check out Demon King Daimo. After my man gets hit by a boat everything falls to pieces.
to be fair, back then we did not have the standards we have today. many of the top shows and the current graphics style etc were not a thing yet. so back then, many of these things were actually good compared to what was out at the time, even tho nowadays we would rate it badly
TIL Garnt loved The Garden of Sinners. That was also my entrance into the world of Type-Moon (that and Melty Blood), but the light novel / movies came at the right time in my life. Literally shaped the kind of music, storytelling, and atmosphere I want to watch and create, and still do to this day. I honestly don't care too much about the magic and stuff, but the emotional core in that series is so strong that it really is something special. Definitely not for everyone, but I think if you're looking for a Fate/stay-like experience with a more dark, philosophical, and intimate spin on it, The Garden of Sinners might be worth your time. Plus, it's just really cool to see ufotable's origins / first foray into the Type-Moon universe.
The cancer thing came out of nowhere? I knew in the first 5 seconds of the show just from the art and the music and title that someone was dying of cancer lol
I dodnt start my anime list until like a few years ago. My list cannot be judged by order or date added. I jad to input like 20 years of anime and im still not finished. Im at 305 series on it right now but there are still so so so much more that either i cant remember the name of. And there were a number of animes that were never serialized for western audiences and i watched them fansubbed back in the 2000s. They are too obscure to remember or find the name of :(
Tbf, I think we all start with a phase when we appreciate every anime we watch. We watch it just because we enjoy it and we rate it as 9 or 10 based on the enjoyment until we re-watch it. I had a MAL too and I rated Sword Art Online 10/10 😂😂😂 But I rewatched it when the movie came out... So yeah, I deleted my MAL now bc I don't deserve to rate any show 😂😂😂😂 Also, I still like the ending of Erased. I love how he did what he did to do, survived and moved on to live his present. 😊
He has a point though. It's uninspired all around. The characters are boring, the deaths are boring and not even that gory, the plot is predictable but also low stakes. Summertime Rendering is much better than Re:Zero because there's an actual threat present and you can't just reset and do it a hundred times until you win. Re:Zero is a mid anime for teenagers without a proper sense of taste, so a 5 or a 6.
@@icebox1954 I get why Rezero might not be for everyone, but calling it uninspired seems a bit harsh. The characters, especially Subaru, are actually quite layered, dealing with psychological trauma and growth throughout the series, which isn’t common in most isekais where MCs solve the problems like it's nothing. The deaths aren't really meant to be gory and more of a consequence for his ignorance (more specifically in S1). And as you can see from the video, Garnt really regrets scoring it too low
@@apostleofninomaeinais3578 I just don't think Subaru's progression is believable or well written which is the main crux of the series. I watched the first two seasons and maybe because I'm nearing 30 now I'm less impressed with shonen in general but there was nothing about Re:Zero that impressed me. I would give it a 5/10 but even though Subaru isn't written well there was clearly an attempt there to portray despair, misery and coping with reality that too few stories in any type of media portray. Thus, 6/10. Also, Emilia is the worst thing about the anime. She's so bland/generic and her voice is annoying (which is weird because I love Megumin's voice from Konosuba) but that's probably the writing pulling the actor down.
@@icebox1954 I get where you're coming from, but I think Subaru’s progression makes more sense if you consider the psychological toll he endures. His growth isn't instant or smooth, it’s messy, which feels realistic for someone experiencing trauma over and over especially his character regression from S2 when he starts to devalue his own life because he realized rewinding time doesn't always undo the problems (Rem) and he wants to make sure that doesn't happen again As for the show not impressing you, I can understand that the series might not resonate the same way for everyone, especially if shonen tropes are getting old for you and tbh I can relate. For Emilia tho, I agree she's pretty bland for the first 3 arcs but arc 4 was the beginning of her growth. Also Rie Takahashi probably voiced her that way because mentally she's still naive and young unlike Megumin who's surprisingly really smart and mature at times
@@apostleofninomaeinais3578 I know that Subaru has matured from early season 1 but there are many moments when that gets flipped, not due to actions but rather composure and lack of thinking. If you were eaten by rabbits and tortured in many other ways you likely wouldn't be as goofy as Subaru is with Emilia. It's just not realistic in my opinion. Trying to hide it is fine, being able to hide it as well as Subaru does to the point of acting like early season 1 Subaru makes no sense. He shouldn't be that skilled. Also, his fear of painful death is far too little for what he's been through. I like the concept that's being done I just think the execution is bad. I'm a fan of the Mushoku Tensei slow and messy character growth myself so I really wanted to like Re:Zero but I just can't. Especially the "Emilia-tan" stuff. It makes me gag and her backstory didn't move me at all. She's legit the worst character in any anime I've watched in years.
Ok so re: psycho pass, I think you missed the funniest bit about it. The psycho pass movie was basically an imperfect love letter to scholars like Franz fanon, in the most unhinged way possible. A japanese author writing a character named for one of the engineers of the Rwandan genocide spend the movie using that character as a mouthpiece for postcolonial philosophy, genuinely unhinged.
They have a whole ass character in the movie whose sole job is to inject Franz Fanon quotes, while the emo MC does power fantasy stuff, and he's named after a genocidaire. Absolutely mind boggling choices.
Funny talking about 12-episode shows. I remember when watching Sailor Moon, like 48 episodes at least per season. And 12 episodes has never been a season.

It's not a bad score at all, but I honestly thought the show was amazing, definitely worthy of a 9 or maybe even a 10. Garnt (seemingly) not talking about most of the mecha he put on this list disappointed me a bit too, I would've loved to hear what he had to say about them, if anything. Maybe he does mention them in the full stream, but I haven't seen it.
I was gonna say the same thing. You beat me to it . Well said.
Disappearence of Haruri a 10: YOUNG GARNT THE GOAT (current one probably also)
Bakemonogatari is actually the series that broke Arkada's (Glass Reflection's) rating system, and he has a REALLY good explanation why.
Bakemonogatari is one of the shows that is super good but i am just not in the headspace to watch it ever. Same for monster; I tried so hard to watch both.
@@h-mancole900 highly reocmmend it. i've watched it like 5 times already it just gets better
@@h-mancole900 Yep you should watch it only when you're in that kind of mood, maybe you can watch like bunny girl senpai cuz that's just Monogatari but the spirit and apparition stuff is replaced by science and is less weird. I like the main character if Monogatari series very much but he's a weirdo 😭, he's a siscon, lolicon, his gf is a yandere and much more crazy stuff 😭. But I recommend it highly, both monster and Monogatari series are great
Scrolling through RUclips just to be blessed by a Garnt vid right from the oven has to be the highlight of my day
I hate when people compare Rahxephon to Evangelion as that series is meant to be a loose remake of the 1975 super robot anime called Brave Reideen thus has nothing to do with Evangelion.
@@vustvaleo8068
I was going to say the same thing . I actually plan on trying to watch Brave Reideen 1975 if I can find it. Idk if there's funsubs available for it .
@@foregroundeclipse8725
I think the first half is subbed faithfully, while the second half is subbed by ARR.
I feel like if I watch this video, I'll be in a bad mood for the rest of the day.
34:53 "i grown up to become everything that i hated" Based quote
I have a formula for ratings just because I'm a engineer, but I still have a weighting for enjoyment because it can honestly push something up or down a point or two
18:06 this is why i take both enjoyment and x factor into account when rating shows
What i do is i have an objective rating, which includes the art and animation, music, writing etc.
And then have a subjective rating which includes enjoyment, x factor, staying power etc.
And averaging those together i decided what score a show should be for me
On some occasions however, the subjective side is way too strong and it renders the objective side null, but that rarely happens
I rate my shows pretty similarly, if not, exactly the same. I should create a MyAnimeList...
How can one say elfenlied deserves a 4 with a straight face, seconds before announcing eromanga-sensei a 10.
ts ts ts. the duality of men
i'm in that "i have better taste" period right now.
Old Man Garnt wouldn’t be where he was today without Edgy Tryhard AnimeZone.
those monogatari series scores are criminal
yea how can you not rate it more than an 8. it's so peak
Rumbling Hearts pioneered the "Coma Strat."
Seeing the old picture of Garnt is really a symbol of what loving anime looks like. Now look at em, hair down and neat, wife, good job. It's alllll thanks to Oreimo😊
brother your microphone has some mysterious stains on it.
Garnt made his MAL account before I was born LMFAOO
Why was the old hair lowkey goated. Very anime lmao
pro tip: If something in you memory is great don't sully it by revisiting.
man its fun to see garnt opening up his little time capsule. kinda wanna see what my shitty taste was like and 15 years ago or what my shitty taste is now 15 years from now. great vid to look back on😝
young garnt was an actual anime character. damn sydsnap is lucky
My unhealthy addiction to yuri is no match for garnt's unhealthy addiction to incest
So if something is mediocre it is actually below average.
gigguk's MAL list was created 7 days before I was born, lol

“Tell that to young Garnt who endured -“
Cuts to ads.
Nooooo
Air Gears underwater mix is still one of the best tracks ever
One minute I'm happy you mention Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien and then I'm thinking "WTF he's saying it's like School Days". Crazy to me.
bro I had to come to the device, I was listening in the background, but about the anohana - SAME, SO FUCKING SAME. I'm 28 now, but this anime has a special place in my heart, from back when I was edgy, outsider teenager. Ofc it's not 9/10, but it is in my nostalgia rotten head too. Also Clannad was one of my first animes. Now I am awaiting a baby myself and sometimes get a flashback from the anime haha. good times...
now this is not what i expected lol
I look back at scores from 3 or 4 years ago and already wonder how much covid messed with my brain, imagine 7 years
Garnt is like an old geezer explaining his shit taste in anime
to be fair, back then we did not have the standards we have today. many of the top shows and the current graphics style etc were not a thing yet. so back then, many of these things were actually good compared to what was out at the time, even tho nowadays we would rate it badly
Ive seen all this and forgot to add any of it rewatch party 😭
Garnt, if you didn't like the pacing in Slam Dunk you should check out the manga. The pacing there is sublime
bro joined mal days after i was born
Young garnt taste was peak
This just made what I needed today!
The cancer thing came out of nowhere? I knew in the first 5 seconds of the show just from the art and the music and title that someone was dying of cancer lol
"Came out of nowhere" often is more about pacing issues rather than it actually being surprising
I had to pause the video when the Space Dandy thing came up. It was the only one that genuinely upset me
honestly, as a monogatari fan, season 1 is great, but, on a first watch it's hard to not just see it as another (very good) tropy harem show
I dodnt start my anime list until like a few years ago. They are too obscure to remember or find the name of :(
This P4 song is so out of context lol
you could rename this as coping for 40 minutes
Tbf, I think we all start with a phase when we appreciate every anime we watch. We watch it just because we enjoy it and we rate it as 9 or 10 based on the enjoyment until we re-watch it. I had a MAL too and I rated Sword Art Online 10/10 😂😂😂
But I rewatched it when the movie came out... So yeah, I deleted my MAL now bc I don't deserve to rate any show 😂😂😂😂
Also, I still like the ending of Erased. I love how he did what he did to do, survived and moved on to live his present. 😊
Garnt had that Isekai character hair back then.
Garnt really putying in the "trash" in TrashTaste Podcast 😂
The band that did the Air Gear OP released a 2020 rendition!
Rezero as a 6 is WAYY too low lol
He really had complaints about it
He has a point though.
@@icebox1954 I get why Rezero
might not be for everyone, but calling it uninspired seems a bit harsh.
His growth isn't instant or smooth, it’s messy, which feels realistic for someone experiencing trauma over and over especially his character regression from S2 when he starts to devalue his own life because he realized rewinding time doesn't always undo the problems (Rem) and he wants to make sure that doesn't happen again
As for the show
not impressing you, I can understand that the series might not resonate the same way for everyone, especially if shonen tropes are getting old for you and tbh I can relate.
She's legit the worst character in any anime I've watched in years.
didn't Air Gear just end out of nowhere in the middle of the first arch
4:28 OMG YESSSS!!! I DID THE EXACT SAME THING 😂😂😂😂
06:35 Now they dont judge the anime you watch... They judge the games you play.
Absolutely mind boggling choices.

i joined MAL in 2017, meanwhile this guy was there for 10 years already
12:00 tsubasa tiger arc was really good...
Bro you joined my anime list one day after I was born 🤣
He made the account when i was just 1 month old,i feel like a baby even though I'm almost 18
No matter what anime you were watching, I'm over 1000 and watching anime is always good.
At the beginning u wanted more, now he understands that was peak anime😂😂😂
Funny talking about 12-episode shows. I remember when watching Sailor Moon, like 48 episodes at least per season. And 12 episodes has never been a season.
