- Not all games make for perfect speedruns. Some require a bit more ingenuity for it to work. Lacks objectives or being endless random hasn't stopped runners from pushing games you would never consider to be speedrunnable to their limits.

This dosn't work. The game has a fail safe to work against it. It puts you in a room witchout an exist called very syrious room if my memory isn't failing me, and than the only way to get the hell out of there is to just restart the whole game. Sorry for my bad english not my first language and have a good day.

Yeah, I got the Super Go Outside achievement on Switch with a simple clock change.
It kind of touched me that despite that poet being terrible he just kept writing even though he was ridiculed.
I feel bad for him
It gets me weirdly sentimental. Reading the “great classics to stand the rest of time” or whatever can often make it feel like these just emerged magically out of nowhere, or their authors were unknowable beings above the rest of us. Reading something that’s just… bad can bridge that gap and remind us that all of these are expressions by people. That art is about that kind of expression, not just failing or succeeding to make a masterpiece.
Fallible as someone may be, as much as they may be flawed to think nine and time rhyme, one day this man felt bad about a tragedy that happened near him, so he wrote about it. And if record and retelling of that poem still exists all these years later, is he really the one being laughed at?
Yes. He absolutely is. But maybe he’s gotten his own last laugh.

I also would like to mention the entire Henry Stickmin series.
Despite the speedruns boiling down to "click this button as fast as possible", there's surprisingly a lot of categories, runners, and games to choose from.

@ryanhernandez8324 idk about PU, but I'm guessing Walkthrough% refers to getting to the tank in Completing the Mission, where Henry gets caught into a looping video walk-through of Completing the Mission
@@ryanhernandez8324 To explain "Parallel Universes (PUs)" In a simplified form - By pressing Start and Skip Intro, followed by pressing one of the options quickly, you can play that option, while also playing a 2nd instance.
Hovering over some options can also accelerate the process of playing out a scene.
This process can theoretically be repeated infinitely, given you can juggle between every scene fast enough before another overlaps it.
This can't be done (traditionally) in Completing the Mission, as it lacks a Skip Intro button. However, there is one option for 100% completion that can trigger PUs, but due to its late placement, it rarely gets used in speedruns.
Last time I played Stanley Parable was in 2017, and this video reminded me I can finally get the Go Outside achievement.

I remember looking through speedruns in 2020 and seeing Subway Surfers no coins challenge run. It was so cool, i just could not believe my eyes someone didn't get a single coin in 8+ minutes... Wall bumping to run inbetween coins was fascinating.
Also, i am surprised you didn't mention that Yu-Gi-Oh game with ridiculous random and super long play time, but described Cluedo and Monopoly
A game that always comes to mind when it comes to weird speedruns is the first Dead Rising. It's like FNAF in the way that there's set time limits that you have to abide by except people modded the game to let you skip time and the speedrunning scene is based on that modded version.

What about Overtime mode? This mode is pretty good for speedrunning
A phrase that sticks with me is "Every game can be speedrun, but not every game has its runner." I think that applies really well in this case.

also, you said that the chance of getting 2 lucky cookies in a row is 1/6 since the chance for one is ~40%. however, the chance for the second cookie giving you the same result in a row is actually 4%, however you might have noticed that fillex was exporting then importing the save file because this makes the game forget what the previous cookie was. in my 2nd place run i was not aware of that so i was resetting for much harder odds lmao

You have a holiday catagory for each neverclick. So you can use them, just place them in the right catagory.

This is the first time I've seen Alt+F4 not just be a malicious "joke" to make the less knowledgable force-quit their PC game(s).
It's funny and I'm tired of pretending it's not
We would like to make an addendum to our original comment;
It was the first time only in the context of what I believe was its reason for being designed.
From what we can tell, Alt+F4 runs the code for clicking the "cose software" button (the 'x' in the corner) including bringing up any prompts the software will bring up when you do so; such as "are you sure you want to quit" dialogue windows. (it also, at least on older Microsoft Windows operating systems, would bring up the shutdown comfirmation window\screen if no other software or windows were the focus.)
Having this shortcut was necessary for user-friendliness, as if a fullscreen (and borderless window at screen size or bigger) software stopped responding, users would need a way to close it, despite not having access to the close software button - especially when said software is set to "always on top"; though making you unable to see or click other windows.
Just our thoughts.
Do people remember arcade machines? I mean, it's cool to have the highest time/score doing some predetermined task... It's also hard to call that a speedrun, so we probably should locate such feats on another place. Still crazy so many people play subway surfers competitively haha.
I'd just like to say your videos scratch a particular itch for me that no other speedrunning content creators do. Please keep making videos :D

Being a Destiny 2 speedrunner is great because all you have to do is wait until right before the content gets removed, get the world record, and then hold it forever.

I find the FNAF Ultimate Custom Night "all jumpscares" run genuinely compelling.
Has anyone done a "light a fire" IRL speedrun, where you need to light a campfire without matches or lighters. Categories include using flint and steel, a magnifying glass, and using friction with nothing but a wooden stick and plank.
These are some of the most interesting runs I' ve ever seen. Thanks for going so in-depth on all of them!
This actually makes me think of what qualities a game would need to be truly unspeedrunnable. I think the condition should either be that it takes everyone the exact same time to beat (which is not exactly easy to accomplish) or that the minimal gameplay necessary to beat it lasts longer than a human being is physically able to stay awake. Goes without saying that the game's code should be ironclad to allow for no glitches, skips, hacks or mods. It would be really interesting to see a legitimately good game that does that, haha.
There are some categories for games that allow sleep breaks, so a game that is really long won't be a barrier
Maybe a visual novel? Then again It won't be a good game to fit those categories
For the former, could be something where the final ending can only be activated X hours/days after the start where X can only be an integer, and it's really easy to get some number X=N but completely impossible (or at least impossible without glitches) to get X=N-1.
I remember seeing a speedrun video about a game with a similar mechanic where (IIRC) some number N+1 was relatively easy, N was thought to be impossible but then someone managed, and the TAS result turned out to be N-1 but it was really really close and for a while it was thought to be impossible even with TAS. (In that game the gate was almost but not _quite_ at the end, so there were also a few frames worth of difference in the remaining sections.) I forgot _which_ game it was, though.
For the latter: No Man's Sky.
It doesn't matter how many restrictions you try to make. Speedrunners will always find something about the game they can speedrun. Clash of Clans "the antithesis of speedrunning" has a number categories based on this premise, and serves as quite the decent example to this. I'm sure there are better examples, but OP gave a good enough example, that exhibits the points expressed
That first one would be the speedrun community running joke that is the "Barney's Hide and Seek" controllerless category.

I'm not really sure I'm getting what you're going for in this video. The thesis of the video is "some things are just a terrible attempt at trial and error that people only like to observe despite itself." but the examples you gave vary between being generally popular and implicitly bad due to how much RNG is in it.
Nothing here really outlines or carries the through line on why some speedruns don't need to exist. It's just a list video pretending to have a more complex structure.
I love Train Simulator speedruns. They shouldn't exist, but they do.

You're wring about one thing, Subway Surfers does have an end. It takes many, many, many years to reach and is achieved when you create and overflow error in the game that causes it to become unplayable, similar to the infamous Donkey Kong kill screen.
Ace Attorney, perhaps my favorite series, is pointless to speed run as is any other visual novel, but I have seen it once. Literally just skipping text for 90% of it and occasionally entering the inputs to progress.
I'd like to see CD+% for FNAF just to see how fast they can beat it (this is the worst idea I've had)

Agreed. Honestly this may be a bit elitist but something like Subway Surfer has no place as a speedgame. There’s no defined end point (and the 30 multiplier is not a good stand in for one).
A speedrun involves going fast.
If it's not about doing something fast, it isn't a speedrun.

If it involves some other non-speed related challenge, it's a challenge run.

I wonder if there is Hide the Fart speedrunners. There was a mobile game port where you had to fart extreme amounts to unlock all the bus stop locations. I found the game hilarious but got bored before I was able to unlock another stage.

Monopoly and pencil sharpening runs are surprisingly interesting, as in having actual strategy!
Games that shouldnt be speedran imo are the ones that are too lore-based, with low muscle memory based puzzles at most. The Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney series is a good example of this. All games are on src and each is as pointless as the other, despite being great games.

The Brazilian boom of Subway surfers makes a lot of sense because theres some weird laws in Brazil that cause video games to be insanely more expensive than they should be so a free game thats widely available to most players since its on the phone makes a lot of sense
There are no weird laws, our money is just undervalued 1 Real is about 5 dollars. Even with our somewhat high import taxes, games wouldn't be that expensive if the Real wasn't so undervalued.

Always leave it to the brazilians to take something from the USA, absolutely butcher it, and then be proud of the end result; see that time where they took the english word "team", decided to spell it "time" for no apparent reason, and then find no issue with it -- somehow making french people always butchering the "th" sound look inane by comparison.

I've only ever done one speedrun and it was for achievements. I was planning on getting the two Hollow Knight speedrun achievements separately, but I managed to get both in one at around 3 hours because my version didn't have most shade skips
You just reminded me that I can get the Go Outside achievement, finally.
You can get Go outside by changing your PC clock, but I guess that'd be considered using an outside tool for speedrunning purposes

What's beautiful about these games that weren't made to be speedran at all is how the community doesn't care and still goes for it just because it's what they truly enjoy
Rpg's like final fantasy, and story focused games, ideally shouldnt. They are literally designed to not make that work. If they were, there would be a gameplay only mode that says fuck off to any sort of story, and turns it into a bare bones game that's just turn based combat and zero else.

Call me old-fashioned, but a category that is explicitly "longer times are better" isn't a fucking speedrun and shouldn't be called a speedrun. Ever. Subway Surfers should find another leaderboard site.
Watched Jordan play baseball once back in the day. Can perhaps see if he had trained in that sport instead, he could have been pro level at it...but most likely not a top three all-timer.
This reminded me how much I loved playing Clue for PC. I guess I didn't think about the logistics of how a speedrun of it would work until now.

Whether it's RNG, they're still investing their time into a getting the perfect randomized game. If they didn't speedrun these ridiculous thing, then nobody would see those theoretical possible speed runs. Look at that one Resident Evil 4 speed run that got amazing RNG. I'm glad that people do these things. It's a crazy moment just in general when all the stars align and the skill is there to pull it all off as well.
The beginning poem wasn't that bad in my opinion. Its just simple.
