Ever since moving to the top of this mountain, our toilet experience has been primitive, and at times traumatic. We’ve spent the best part of three years going to the toilet in the bushes with a shovel and a knife, fighting for our place amongst the grunting wild boar. But now times are changing, we’ve watched thousands of RUclips videos and come up with the most complicated and extravagant compost toilet design the world has ever seen, which will change our lives forever.

Our story:
We are Emilia, Robbie & Sage, we left our city lives behind and moved to the top of a mountain in Spain, to live off-grid. We’ve spent two years alone, renovating an old stone house and restoring the abandoned land. Join us as we continue to build our off-grid homestead, and become self-sufficient from the land.

Do you think we’ll ever see a lynx on our wildlife camera!? 😅🤞🏻 Say hi in the comments below! 🌈
Hi homesteading as you now not easy but very rewarding and lots of hard work. Your videos show the great togetherness
Two thumbs up
@ladyandtheowlman Sweet life. Since 1981, I'm a leader in Regenerative not found on internet. Since '88, off/on I live as ecovillager in Bali.
You don't have to give up on olive trees or other trees. I can consult on the things to make it work better. It won't be perfect, but you can have trees as long as you don't have a herd of hungry elephants. I'm not on instagram, so give me a professional way of reaching you. Consulting is my livelihood.
#asifLifeonEarthMatters
If there's a lynx anywhere near you I think you have the absolute best camera setup in Southern Europe, not just Spain!
So I think you'll capture one (on film) eventually
@@homestead_freak Yikes, that sounds really tough, Homestead_Freak! I have sympathy - I set my heart on doing forestry for the rest of my life at 14yrs old - good school results, a forestry degree and 4 glorious years in equatorial Africa (arid area forestry) later I got my ideal job on the West coast of Scotland ... great in early spring, complete torture in summer! I hate midges! I couldn't cope. I managed 20 months.
Have you bug-proofed your living quarters with bug screens on windows and doors, bug traps on the floor, solar fed UV traps, yellow sticky traps ...anything and everything to give you a sanctuary?
A midge hat outside, long sleeves, bug spray
Sage is amazing boy what life he has with loving wonderful parents happy birthday sage 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you Peter that's a really nice thing to say! ❤️
dear Emilia, Robbie & Sage...you're absolutely adorable... your dedication to make this work... and your level of energy to create this farm and run it, is outstanding... sending much love, and thank you for being such an example for living in harmony with the land, and the wild animals around you... 💖
Thanks for your sweet comment Jörn! It's nice for us to have such motivational words! ❤️
I always look forward to your videos!!! thank you for your positivity!!!❤
Thank you Vlad! That's a very kind thing to say! We really appreciate the support for our videos and family! ❤️
A Good Finish tip for the small door on your New Out-House, close to door and go inside, all the way around the door on the Framing, you need 1/4 round Molding, or some Small square stock to go all the way around the 3 sides of the door!
This way it will be sealed from BUGS when Closed, and weather, and it won't try to close too far!
That's a great idea! We really don't want any bugs going into the bin area, or snakes for that matter! There is definitely a little gap there at the moment. Thanks for the advice ❤️
Good morning 🌅, Happy Birthday 🥳 Sage , It is great to see how Sage is growing up, and how he is learning from you both, I see control tower is being constructed to become a safe house, 🏡 😂, great job job well done 👍🏻 😂, it will have amazing views,
The trellis work matches the hillside that’s the reason why it’s going up and down , Great use of bamboo canes , especially when they are free, great footage of wildlife, and in the not too distant future, you’ll be self-sufficient, You are all doing an amazing job, keep up the great work stay safe, I have a Hog , and I am going for a ride on it today, Deuce. France,
Sage says thank you Phil! Robbie agrees with you that the trellis's match the mountains perfectly. I think I'm just about getting used to them now haha! ❤️
Thanks for yet another adorable video. You really make my day with your everyday life that is quite exotic for a Norwegian like me. I am eagerly looking forward to every video you are releasing. Thanks for sharing❤
Thank you Bjorn! And thank you so much for clicking the join button on our channel and becoming a RUclips member! We're doing our best to post videos more frequently, we're still just figuring it all out so bear with us! Haha yes for sure the climate here makes things look quite hot and exotic compared to where we used to live in England too! Sometimes a little too hot... we're looking forward to when our 200 or so newly planted trees begin to canopy over and we get some shade around the farm! ❤️
Your nuclear shelter, come toilet, is moving on 🙂 What a beautiful place, I can see it is not the easiest but the most beautiful places are seldom easy. A simple tip ! When using screws, apply a little candle wax to the screw, the wood absorbs the wax, hardens and never rots, simple but true 😉 I am certain you have a candle or two handy. To see you work (together) is special, that brings joy and smiles, thank you for them. ❤
Wow thanks Paul, never heard that advice before about candle wax and screws, we'll give it a go! Really glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for leaving a comment it supports our channel and family! ❤️
@@ladyandtheowlman I rescued an Afghan hound that was about to be put down next day, he ran over, smiled , towered above me, I'm 6"3, respect to the rescue team. Point being, I built fences with wood, that tip ,is a good one .
Such a beautiful family. I was hoping for another installment soon and here we are! I swear your channel is by far one of the best on RUclips. Cheers to your channel growing very quickly. Happy Birthday, Sage.
Thank you Fireindahole! For your love and ongoing support for our videos and our family! Such motivational words for us! And thanks for clicking the subscribe button too it makes all the difference. Sage says thank you fireindahole! ❤️
Very beautiful location! I loved the night camera video. I live in SW Portugal and build with mud. Much less work than concrete! Glad I clicked on you guys. :)
Thanks for the comment Veronica! Glad you enjoyed the video! We'd love to build with mud too, it just seems like a whole new learning curve for us, so it's a bit daunting! ❤️
Hi, new subscriber. Just finished going through all your VLOGS and I'm here to stay. Love the energy and interaction your family has, and loving your VLOGS. All the best from Australia.

Happy Birthday Sage!! How great you got to spend it with the people you love and have a trip to the beach.
Thank you Bob! That's a very sweet comment ❤️
Is that somewhere in Valencia? You two are just actually living life how it should be. You two had the initiative AND the determination to know that you wanted to live like that and it is just insanely enviable. When I think about people struggling in the cities, commuting, putting up in dreadful jobs, paying bills like crazy and living paycheck after paycheck, while you had the IQ to know what is coming, and what is coming is bloody hell for the rest of the world, AI leaving millions of people without a job,: so you are becoming self-sufficient, you will provide your own energy, water, food, away from the taxman and the bloody letters from the bank.
Not that I have those problems but definitively I wish I could live like that.
You didn't have much money, yet you said, we have ourselves, we are young energetic and intelligent. Definitively we can make it. And you did. Inspirational 100%.
Both of you look like selected from a model magazine. The guy is lucky, what a wife!
Your dedication to raising a family off-grid in the mountains of Spain, focusing on permaculture practices and sustainable living with your innovative compost toilet project, embodies a commitment to harmony with nature and community. And I am Floating Village Life
Thank you Floating Village Life! We like your fishing videos, and bird sounds in the background! Very pretty ❤️

Amazing video to see y'all living out there among the many wildlife around ya.
Curious, about the pooper being even with the window view.
Y'all ever seen videos of Dry Pour Concrete, much easier for smaller projects. Just a suggestion.
Truly enjoyed your video, an amazing family you are. Do wish y'all a wonderful week ahead. 👍👍☺️
Thank you Thomas for the sweet comment and for being subscribed to our channel! It means the world to us! We'll look into dry pour concrete, we've never heard of it! ❤️

coming from far out of the internet travelling through most different topics landing in ur story and catched the most nice colours in the surroundings of spain .. which is of course full of harsh living and dry nature - but You are young, you will do it!
Thank you for your kind words! The colours really are amazing here! ❤️
Wow! The camera was amazing showing the animals and a snake too! Looking forward to the progress of your home. Thanks for sharing!😊

Thank you that's a very kind thing to say! ❤️
That has a great man, a great husband, a great father - And together they made another great humanbeing, an awesome little mirracle full of life, love with mesuring skills like no other 😉 ( sorry hi2577, I just needed to finish your post, 😎)
@@k.flydesign498 Yes, of course, let us not forget that the magnificent being who brings both woman and man into this world is woman, and if a woman is intelligent, knowledgeable, cultured, happy, merciful, and compassionate, this reflects on the entire family. The supreme being in existence is woman. Sevgiler
@@hit2577 Noone can argue against that 🥰 that is the wholw truth, and nothing but the truth ☺ this family is so loving, it spreds put through the screen and right into ones heart ❤
Haha that's a very sweet comment! "an awesome little mirracle full of life" that's such a nice thing to say! ❤️
A serious question from a fellow off gridder - If Sage had fallen while RUNNING with that jagged open edge saw and cut an artery, how long would it take you to get to an emergency room? I see you are growing more and more accustomed to taking risks, wobbly ladders, leaping on and off your new concrete roof, it's all fine until the day it isn't, then your entire world can change. I would encourage you to move always with the awareness of how many minutes exactly it is to a great ER, one day you might need it.
Thank you for your words of experience and wisdom, we appreciate the advice, and will do our best to be more careful 🙏❤️
I find your house on google earth!so cool ! I wish you lots of happiness!
Thank you for clicking the subscribe button on our channel, it means the world to us you're enjoying our videos and writing us kind comments! We wish you happiness too! ❤️
haha cant believe you guys are still working on your bathroom....it should be very zen once its done.....will probably need to tile it :P
you should turn it into a throne....like from a medieval castle!
Yep still going Adam thanks for reminding us haha! You're right we need to tile it, and we both dislike tiling very much, it's so difficult! You can watch us fail at that in the next episode. ❤️
@@ladyandtheowlman can;t wait! :)
You guys get awesome animals on the game cam.
Thanks Bob! We've been putting up animal cams for 3 years here, but we've only just figured out how to get good shots, most of the time you get nothing! lots of strategy involved Robbie says haha... you need to position them right in the middle of a good track that has only one route! ❤️
Fantastic..well done cloud people.
You made your own little world...and it's better!!..👍
Thank you Tim! Haha cloud people, we like it ❤️
soo many wild animals !
So many! We never knew they were there until we put the cameras up! They like coming to our land because we have a mountain spring, so maybe that's why we see so many ❤️

Red poppy flowers. How beautiful
Thank you Martin! Yes so many poppies! They always come up in the most random places! I think their seeds live for a long time underground and appear when the soil is disturbed? ❤️
What amazing wildlife you have on the mountain nice video well done 😊😊
Thank you Donald! We really appreciate the love! The wildlife really is amazing, you'd have no idea it was all going on at night without the cameras! ❤️
thats awesome for sharing i can't believe your country has not up dated its screws to better ones. Here in America we don't use them no more why? like your husband said you massacred that screw.. yes cross bit or Philips bit screws are junk. What we use here are called Torx screws or stars crews takes a star bit or a Torx bits. The grip is better when screwing them in or taking them out. thicker shafts then Philips screws and we build decks and walls and homes with them awesome screw. and you can get them in every length. as for you garden it looks awesome and please not so much on the what looks good what looks bad.. as long as it has trellis for plants.. it is all good. Here for trellis i use woven wire and posts at either end in ground. 4 to 8 inches above ground and thats were bean peas start climbing.. works awesome. Wish i was coming that way i would bring a couple boxes of Screws to you.. your husband would love them. take care happy birthday Sage and many many many more you have great parents awesome!! life is an adventure awesome and you living the best. As for car over heating?? it could be a number of things? low coolant belt slipping, water pump went out, or thermostat sticking. all easy fixes. be safe have fun i am with you.
Thank you Gary for your kind and thoughtful comment! Means the world to us you're enjoying our videos! Robbie is amazed you use Torx screws in America, wish we had those, all our screws here are galvanised too, so can only use them once before they get rusty! We have some extra special stainless steel screws that cost double the price, but so worth it! Haha would love a delivery of Torx screws! ❤️
Really cool structure, but definitely needs some support for such a heavy roof
Thank you Aaron for your comment and support for our channel! Thank you for your advice too, we're definitely going to try and add some more support now our roof ended up being so big! Any ideas on how we could do that? ❤️
Maybe four Concretepillars on the Outside
Seems like a good plan! We'll keep this in the back of our mind whilst we observe what happens with the crack situation haha! ❤️
Torx screws are hard to find in Spain, I know.
I find them at the Würth Store.
Thanks for the advice Michael! Looks like we have a Wurth store near where we do our food shopping so we'll check it out! ❤️
That was exciting watching a pile of form's form. 🙂
Haha! For some reason we thought we'd be able to re-use all the wood after, but we had to rip the entire thing to pieces to get it off! Made a nice timelapse at least ❤️
Hi Robbie you are a hard worker but I think you best job so far is that soup you made it looks so delicious and would love to see you cook it and show us the ingredients you used, I think I am not the only one that thinks it looks so yummy
Hi Jose, it's Robbie, thank you so much for your kind words on my cooking! We'll do some cooking videos soon for sure! ❤️
Have just subscribed , I truly think that I will enjoy watching your channel , simply because it's so lay back and fun , quirky is one word I would use . Also having 3 Beautiful people doesn't hurt , oh , for the guys I mean Handsome 😁😁😁😁😁
That out house will be talk of the town once it's finished , and the view is something else Wow . There is a large amount of feral / wild animals running round your place , it will need a strong fence to protect your veg patch .
Look forward to your next episode . ( Australian ) .

Well...some people get building knowledge or inspiration from these utube shows. You guys are great, very entertaining, but that outhouse with a concrete roof...well...it might be the only one built in such a manner on all of God's green earth. Hats off for creative initiative.

Another fellow offgridder here. - Please avoid these plastic strings you used for tying the stakes together, they degrade rapidly in the sun and shed microplastic non stop. You can see it in the video when Emilia ties the knot, plastic fibres flying off. Done the same mistake a few years back and still find little strings of the stuff in the garden.
Thanks Troy for the advice! What do you use on your homestead? We've tried all types of string but they only last 1 summer with the sun! Really appreciate the comment and support for our family! ❤️
@@ladyandtheowlman I go with natural fiber and maintenance every year, takes only a couple of hours and some poles need to be changed anyway or some are moving due to crop rotation. And i dont have to undo any knots, the cut off pieces of the strings are degrading in the soil, no waste plastic to carefully collect. I found it to be less work overall.
That's a good idea, we will change for the coming years for sure!
Whoop whoop...I love a video starting with something concrete...
Haha thanks Stijn! Whoop! ❤️
A bit like Olivia wild the actress but more beautiful younger and a British accent 😊 Damn now i want to watch "House M.D. again 🤣🤣

Just found you here on youtube, and wanted to tell you how heart warming I found to watch it! You should be so proud that you took the step to create your own homestead! Beautyfull famely, and love seeing your inne child breake out through the the thick walls of adulthood,,,,Did I just create a new word ? 😂😂 Anyway, I am seriusly thinking about moving from Sweden to Croatien and join in on a Homestead building there with likeminded people i have never met 😂 I know it sounds crazy, but if you dont take the step and try it, it will become a "what if" thought banging my brain for the rest of my life! I was born in Iceland and moved to Sweden when i was about 25. Now i am 50 years young, but it is time to move on, and leave this untollerable delution of "normal life in a free country" You wont be free untill you are in total control of your live, and when you are self sufficient! You can never be that living like "normal" livestyle, depending on electrisety, food, water and all the other things in live paying the price the big geedy companies desites, becouse you dont have a choise, the paying tripple ore more taxes on every thing you need to survive just so some .......pip........ people can live easie in the upperclass.
But then we also got all the things we are not allowed to do in our homes in the towns or the cities, and that irritates me just as much. You buy a property in the town, but it is never realy your. You buy a land in the middle of nowhere,, now that is another story 🥰 Looking forward to follow you guys! Stay strong, have fun and stay of grid❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks so much for your kind and thoughtful comment Kjarri! For sure the 'what if' scenario can get to you! Sounds like you have a good plan, and some good motivation, so go for it! We wish you the best of luck, and hope to see you in the comments on our future videos to stay in touch! ❤️

Usually when you plan to build a concrete roof, which is really heavy, you build four concrete posts at the corner to support the weight, those each have rebar to prevent fracturing, those ceramic blocks are not structural, I would encourage you to research that yourself, they are meant ONLY to fill in between concrete pillars not to support the weight. To think then to add on top of it clay based soil and the water retenion weight, you will have cracks through that block in the first year and if an earthquake did come, I cant imagine why you think thats a shelter, it will literally turn into the coffin you, hopefully not prophetically, thought it was.
Thank you for your advice, it sounds like you know a lot more about building than us haha! When you say it like that, with all the soil weight, it does sound a bit unstable! We'll keep and eye on the cracks and add some reinforcements like you mention (columns with steel) if that time comes! ❤️
@@ladyandtheowlman As a simple stop gap, why not mix a bit of cement, and stuff it in all the holes of the ceramic that are currently acting like pillars on the sides with the windows, at least if you fill those solid, the weight of the entire roof won't be pushing down on just two ceramic blocks, because when those blocks crack, with that weight, they are just going to shatter and the whole roof could come down, with cement in the center, absent an earthquake, you will at least have time to remedy it with a proper concrete column. You guys are doing great, just maybe share plans in the future and get advice ahead of time. jaja, entonces.. vamanos
That's a really good idea, we'll definitely do that! Especially on the window side. That's a cool idea too, we'll try and share some drawings before our next big build, especially the structural stuff! ❤️
Nice family. 😊
He's right, you two should consider reinforcement. I think it's essential for your safety, before the rainy season comes
You are awesome) keep going
Thank you so much Valdemar for your motivational words! ❤️

Very impressed with the bog construction, do you think the goats or boars will like the roof to survey their kingdom, much like the lions in the movie Out of Africa?
Haha well these animals are constantly amazing us, so there is every chance that this could happen! Pretty sure I heard a toad on the roof the other night, must have climbed up the tree! Thanks so much for subscribing to our channel Mark we really appreciate the comment and support for our family! ❤️
If there is one thing I've learnt over the years of building compost toilets is the ULTIMATE height from the top of the toilet seat to the floor is 15 inches. Trust me after building many that's the most "Comfortable" and efficient height 😊
Thanks Aussie Homestead! 15 inches, 38cm, seems like a good height! Although my legs are much longer than Robbies haha! We were thinking of having a foldout stool so people of different heights could find the right position! ❤️
