I really enjoy my Mini and other Trangia cook kits that I have. One thing to be aware of with the Mini is that, if you set it up in the wind, once it heats up it will turn into an absolute blow torch. IMHO, it becomes quite dangerous to use. The increased oxygen to the alcohol burner and the increased air movement from wind generate high, very hot and unpredictable flames. I experienced this when I first got my Mini when the tip of my thumb caught a very quick sideways blast of flame from the burner resulting in a third degree burn. It didn't take more than a fraction of a second. If this blow torch phenomena happens while the stove is sitting on top of an old, dry, weathered picnic table, you may have a bonfire on your hands. Nowadays, I'm careful to set up my Mini only where the breeze is mild, and I further keep things under control and improve the cooking speed with a thin, lightweight aluminum windscreen. Oh, and a big thumbs up on the poached egg technique with the Mini pan. I'm gonna give that a try.
Have you looked at some of the mods for the spirit burner with bronze wool, carbon felt, and a little steel screening? I've made mine basically spill proof, and it burns with a lovely, steady blue flame now. Might slow it's actual boil 500 mil time, but for me, it's much more stable and reliable now. Plus it makes actually simmering totally possible. I'm in love with this mini-kit : )
@scottyplug I have played around with the felt inside. I found it to work really well. I always wonder though, if it was right why don’t Trangia do it?

I bought one, partly as a result of watching this video (and several others). I have had a Trangia 27 for decades and was recently given another. I received the Mini Trangia this week and tried it out on the patio just to boil some water and get a feel for it. It was a blustery night, but hardly a storm, and the flames were spectacular to the point of dangerous. I then tried it in the garage, where there is a draught but no wind. It was much more controlled but the flames still licked up the side of the pan. For completeness, I then tried with the simmer ring in the fully open position. (This is how simmer rings were on the much earlier burners, without the sliding disc.) The flame was much more stable. I then tried it outside again in the wind with the simmer ring. The flame with wind + simmer ring was comparable to the flame with no wind and no simmer ring. Note that the windshield gets very hot. Certainly the T27 is a safer unit more stable on an uneven surface, and with a safer burn in windy conditions. It seems most people who use the MIni use a separate wind shield, which negates some of the advantages of the Mini being light and compact. All that said, the Mini is cute and nicely designed, and I'm sure that with practice, I will get better at making it work.
Firstly. Great to hear you tested it first. Imagine having that happen while on a moor or in a woodland. I have not found a way to use this stove without a separate wind shield or a very big rock to cook near. Same with my triangle. You’re right. Thanks @Gaziano Outdoors. It was bloomin’ lovely. Next video I’m going to work on the ‘production’ side of things. Make it all a little shiny and consistent. Once again THANKYOU for the like and the watch and the comment. It means a lot and helps greatly.
Meant to say also about the mini - a simple but fantastic piece of kit often overlooked these days. Ive had mine for 12 years and the fry pan is losing its non stick coating. Ive always thought if Trangia brought out a titanium version it would be a hit as ive stop using mine as I am bit suspect about using aluminium to boil water for drinking.
Mark Tomlinson yeah. It’s a wonderful bit of kit. It strips it right back. Man have fire and pot to put food in. I am in the process of making my own version. When I get it right I’ll share it on here. It’ll be made of steel. Not the lightest but for a better heat transfer I’m not bothered by a few grams. Thanks so much for watching and taking time to comment.
Mark Tomlinson not overly sure. I recently had a kid and have spent the best part of 4 months in hospital. So I’m just emerging from all of the chaos. I’d like to post more videos now. It’s just a matter of doing it between nappies and tantrums. And that’s just me!
Great video Thom. Who doesn't love a fry up? The mini Trangia looks like a decent bit of kit. Do you think that wind shield would be good enough up on a tor or would you recommend using something else?
Summit Or Nothing great question. A complete oversight for me not mentioning it! The wind shield isn’t up to much. I would recommend getting a separate shield. This would definitely increase fuel efficiency in higher winds. I have a vango one, which is good unless you’re on anything other than soft ground. In which case it’s a sack of c***s
Because the wind makes the hinges fold in on themselves unless you can dig it into some earth. I’ve been scouring for a better option. I think I might’ve found something. Waiting for it to arrive! Hopefully it’ll arrive before my Dartmoor mission with the old man at the end of the month.
A piece of tinfoil from a baking dish works well I my experience. Cut it long enough to wrap around the Trangia excuse for a windshield with about an inch to spare all around and wide enough to just clear the base of the pot/pan. You'll need a few holes poked in the base to help with airflow or the burner may be able to work at its best.
Masterful and brilliant Sir. Could easily be done with veggie sausages and beans instead. The only thing is ........ we need toast. Any ideas?. Kind regards.
Not gonnna lie. It’s great for what it is. But any strong wind and it’s mainly just for show. I like having a foldable one that I can bounce some heat back to the pot.
I'll probably regret saying this as these are some of your oldest videos, but you need an atmos track to go under your vo. You will have enough from your outdoors sound, just a small amount, looped will do. Super super vids though, loving your work
The biggest mistake is to put the frying pan on an almost unstable fire. The frying pan must be moved in the glow of the fire so that the heat is evenly transferred to the product being fried. Like a campfire that doesn't get scorching point heat. You have to keep your eye on the temperature of the fat and the progress of the frying, not on the pan in place. Boiling water is a different matter.
This looked like the smallest "Full Breakfast", for a day out on the trail that I've ever seen! My wife, who was watching with me, thought perhaps you are on a diet????😅 Cheers!
Haha. What do you mean? It filled the pan! Tell your wife. Yes I am on a diet. Though it’s no excuse to miss out the second sausage and rasher. The hogs pudding. The tomato. The fried slice and beans. I will do better! But also. Thanks for watching.
Not in this instance. But since this video, he visits a lot. I’ve named him ‘Fake Douglas’ as he looks a lot like another cat called Douglas. But a lookalike.

Next video I’m going to work on the ‘production’ side of things. Make it all a little shiny and consistent.
Once again THANKYOU for the like and the watch and the comment. It means a lot and helps greatly.
@@OffTheBeatenPot look forward to more 👍
Looks superb....
Thanks!
It was a real treat
Damn nice video where everything came together .Let's see more
Super! Thank u :)
kpmac0 thank you!
@@OffTheBeatenPot wow ill look forward to that. Any idea when you will have this done?
@@OffTheBeatenPot 😂😂 Whys it no good on hard ground then?
I’ve been working on something similar but with a cut up soda can. In the meantime I shall give yours a try. Thanks!
That’s a better looking breakfast than most cafes! But using metal utensils in the pan?? Won’t that wreck the coating?
Thanks!
Probably best not to use metal in these. But I do go carefully. And now I’ve found the gerber compleat it’s been a game changer.
Lovely
cosgrove notts thanks!!!
Brilliant!
Thanks Mr and/ or Miss Pokus!
Masterful and brilliant Sir. Could easily be done with veggie sausages and beans instead. The only thing is ........ we need toast. Any ideas?. Kind regards.
On Any Sundry Mule use bread. Put it on a fork (or a stick) hold it above the flame. Voila. Toast!
@@OffTheBeatenPot I would need to see it done on a gas stove or trangia!
Excellent video 👍 where did you get your blue egg carry thingy?
The blue egg thingy was from a camping store. They are available on amazon and ebay etc.
Niiiiiiice one! 👍👍👍👍
Colin McLean thanks Colin.
Good!
Thanks!
How good is the standard windshield/stand for the mini? I've heard mixed reviews of it
Not gonnna lie.
Super super vids though, loving your work
I’m with you there. Though the last time time I did an atmos track people said they hated it! Haha.
@@OffTheBeatenPot people 😒
Yummy!
Marvi Marquez it was rather
Do you have to be careful with the knife? Could it damage the non stick coating?
Somewhat. Though the coating will come of eventually so I’m not precious. Ideally they would make it without the non stick.
My wife, who was watching with me, thought perhaps you are on a diet????😅
Cheers!
Haha. What do you mean? It filled the pan!
Tell your wife. Yes I am on a diet. Though it’s no excuse to miss out the second sausage and rasher. The hogs pudding. The tomato. The fried slice and beans.
I will do better!
But also. Thanks for watching.
Do you know the weight of just the pot?
I just weighed it and mine is 93grams (or 3.3oz - depending on where you are in the world.)
I hate Teflon coated cookware esp those for outdoor
kk k that’s fair enough. I would like to see them produce a non Teflon version.
I do prefer it when things aren’t coated myself.
What kind of fuel that you use? Kerosene?
I used ethylene. Depending on where you are in the world it has different names. Denatured alcohol in the states. Or methylated spirits.
@@OffTheBeatenPot oh thanks for the answer, and once more. Which one do you think is better? Gas based / fluid based fuel?
@@imandabayu7611 now there’s a question!
I think there is a place for both. But I always reach for my trangia. Which is the alcohol (fluid) based.
@@OffTheBeatenPot Thanks~ I already subscribed for my gratitude. Love your channel.
@@imandabayu7611 thank you so much!!
I have plans this summer for more videos and I look forward to sharing them with you.

Did the cat get any sausage? Automatic “like” for your feline friend.
Not in this instance.
But since this video, he visits a lot. I’ve named him ‘Fake Douglas’ as he looks a lot like another cat called Douglas. But a lookalike.
Great video I love the Trangia stove.
If ever there was a zombie apocalypse and the whole of human society turned on itself, you won't be one of the ones going hungry mate. Fair play.
I’d be the one with axes strapped to me, running riot and causing mayhem
Great review. I have a couple of these and love them above my other expensive stoves! Just one thing, stop biting your fingernails!!!
It’s from anxiety and ptsd. I’ll try!!
Thanks for watching!
@@OffTheBeatenPot Keep biting them, it's just another form of recycling! Good video by the way.

great review I love Trangia cook sets .but I think the mini Trangia is shit
+John Clarke haha. I think that in certain situations that they are great. However for size and versatility I love the Trangia Triangle.
@@OffTheBeatenPot yes I have one if you use steel curtain clips you can clip a windscreen on to it around the top of the Trangia triangle
John Clarke I might have to try that!
