At first glance this move reminds me of John Lynch to the niners front office. Everyone questioned his qualifications at the time.

It also helped having Shanahan as the head coach and knowing exactly what type of players he wants/needs for the roster to work. Hopefully Posey and Melvin can have that kind of relationship and build a competitive team

Good comparison. Posey has the IQ for this position. But Ken is right. Posey needs to surround himself with trusted baseball people.

Flaherty could be Posey first "big" signing. Replace Snell and save $.

With Ohtani locked in to top the west for a decade, the giants organization shouldn’t be afraid to make some mistakes and going all in on the future

1st move, outside of the GM & staff changes, is getting an extension done on Snell.

To bring in someone as inexperienced as Buster Posey puts a question mark on Giants ownership and management. As a Giants fan I wish him well, but this move is suspect.

Feels like Magic being put in charge of the Lakers

I mean the 49ers hired John Lynch as their General Manager and looked how that turned out. Plus Posey was already working behind the scenes and was the one who was able to get Matt Chapman to sign an extension.

Definitely can understand the concern, but of all players I’d bet on out of the box he’d be up there. Primarily due to how he played the game in terms of baseball iQ and captaining what I’d consider among the most unlikely championship teams. I’m happy to flip a coin and see how this turns out.
My bigger concern is if we will be able to make upgrades to our development and strategy teams, since I just think there is a fundamental level difference in how the org functions compared to other elite orgs with pedigrees.

I mean coming from Farhan, what do we have to lose...?
at least we have a high IQ player that has been a leader on world series winning teams. besides, he will get plenty of mentorship and support from people like Sabean

Posey is not a "dumb jock." He was a high IQ baseball player. This should translate into a high IQ executive.. he is not the first to transition successfully.
Ken is right; Posey needs to surround himself with trusted baseball people..

Posey’s an introvert. They can be great leaders…it just has a different look that your typical extroverted face of the team. And he’s a smart guy who will want great people to help him do the job. I think it will be a challenge, but I also think Posey’s has the right ingredients to have a good chance at success. He seems like a guy who will strive for the balance of analytics and old-school “baseball brain” that the Giants need. It’s going to be fascinating to watch it all unfold.

As a Giants fan, I will take Buster Posey any day. At least he knows how to win. Farhan had almost no baseball experience and somehow it was determined he was qualified to make decisions simply because he liked moneyball and went to MIT 💀

They have a GM ... Pete Putila. And Posey has been a part-owner serving on the board of directors in recent years, not a special advisor.

At the very least, he should be able to bring talent back by his sheer gravitas

Rosenthal brings up a great point. The analytics movement became a spiteful "revenge of the nerds" campaign. This was apparent when Brian Sabean fled to the Yankees and said his advice wasn't wanted by the Zaidi regime.

The Giants have a better shot now at signing Snell than they did before the appointment of Posey as POBO. He will surround himself with talented baseball people to assist the Front Office.

Analytics is overrated and over used. Analytics comes from guys that never played above little league and dont understand the game of baseball or players that never studied the game. Those analytics guys need to be gone. Pre Analytics there werent as many arm issues and guys could last a full season going deeper than 6 innings in a game. You had dogs not soft kittens on the mound like you do now.
