- Visual dysfunctions are very common following concussion with more than 50% of patients demonstrating impairments in oculomotor function. Patients who have difficulties with their vision often seek out the help of a Neuro-Optometrist (which is an optometrist who specializes in rehabilitation of the eyes to help make them work better as a team). This type of vision rehab program can be very helpful in some concussion patients HOWEVER there are a few things that you should keep in mind prior to signing up!

I had the beginning of dv now determined to be strabismus, in 2020. I was trying to find a dr to give me a prescription that took away the dv. Then in 2/13/22, I fell backwards and hit my head on a concrete floor. I stood up after, shaking like a leaf. I was so grateful to not break anything as I was 68 years old, that I didn’t realize I should’ve gone to the hospital. Fast forward 1 to 2 months, I started having tinnitus, never had that before, head pains behind my eyes, extra neck pain, fluorescent light problems, decision making problems, depth perception problems etc. I went to many Drs because I thought I had dv problems. That it was just worse because of the uncorrected dv. I had 39 weeks of vision therapy where I wore fresnel prisms on both lens. Done with vt and still had double vision but I felt a little better. My dv was at least stable now and I could wear thick prisms. Last week because I was still not very stable, I turned around in my living room and cracked the same back part of my neck on the window ledge. The symptoms, without dv are all back! I realized I must’ve had a concussion the first time and I had just had another one! I don’t even know what to do anymore.
Wow this is spot on for how I've been feeling since I fell. I had a minor concussion a month ago and I've had pretty much all of these side effects since. I'm starting visual therapy today.
How you doing today man?
How are you now
I had concussion 5 months ago I get head aches and my scalp hurts and the patient top of head bones hurt.
Great video. Differentiate the anatomical systems during a complete and holistic assessment. Grade the individual systems performance and correlate to symptoms. Then create a plan to address each affected system in a compressive and graded way. Make sure the person you see for an assessment will assess comprehensively!
This is totally what I've had, thanks.
this is so helpful thankyou Cam
Great info! Thank you for sharing this. I'm a vision therapist and am trying to expand my knowledge about these other areas!
Would smoking weed or nicotine affect your vision recovery ?
Very helpful channel. Insightful. I now am aware of my neck/eye relationship through movement. I will exercise, eat whole foods, eye exercises. ect.. thank you for your channel.
Éxcellent info!!
I 100% agree that the neck is very involved with the vision problems I see in clinic. Concussion rehabilitation is very much a team approach. I have often found when patients feel WORSE after vestibular therapy it’s because they have unresolved vision issues. When they’re not making improvements in VT, it’s often a neck issue.
Would smoking weed or nicotine affect your vision recovery ?
This is so me🙁 no one wants to help..or they just don’t no how to
yes, they are call correct
This is best explanation about vision therapy! Thank you. I have vestibular disfunction and researching whether VT in addition to vestibular therapy would be beneficial or not. Seems it would be worth a consultation at the least.
Hi guys, I really appreciate this information. Do you have a person in Kenya who can help me with this? I'm really suffering at the moment.
Thank you for explaining this, I’ve got acquired nystagmus this one is not fun, convergence and the entire binocular syndrome etc…etc…it’s horrible. I’m in vision therapy
same Would smoking weed or nicotine affect your vision recovery ?
I'm also having nustagmus and the doctor suggested anti epileptic drugs. I'll have to be trying these...how have you been doing?
" snowy' for me I'd the pupils response especially dark
I have c1 c2 Missalligment I get adjustments by atlas orthogonal and vision therapy and massage therapy. My neck is super stiff what other treatment do I need to add ?
Thanks for this video - have you treated anyone with long covid who has concussion symptoms such as jerky pursuits? I have been dx with convergence insufficiency also after covid. I’ve never had a head injury. I’m paying a fortune for visual therapy but making no improvement. My neck was assessed by a physiotherapist and was ok. I don’t have any balance issues. Just bad brain fog, blurred vision, troubles reading and comprehension, painful/tired eyes, light sensitivity. I’m thinking this is all neuro-inflammation but doesn’t seem to resolve. Thanks!
Hey I elbowed my steering wheel because I was pissed off and it jolted my head. Is it possible that I’m concussed I feel dizzy the day after and now I hurts to touch the top of my head?
How about total darkness
I was laying on the floor with my fingers resting underneath my head to provide comfort and then for some reason I unconsciously decided to move my fingers from underneath my head and my head hit the floor. Only an inch of impact which would be height of my fingers. I didn’t really think anything of it but it did hurt. Next day I was experiencing nausea and 5 days later nausea came up when playing hockey and I have a sore spot where my head hit the floor. Concussion??
Got hit at left head have double vision blurry vision pain at neck, dizziness, headache, sleeping problem, sound intolerance, cannot tolerate car breaking feel more dizzy, sometimes two ear with two types of sound from same sound source. Do not know while vision is damaging day by day.
Very good info, but it seemed like Dr Marshall is going over this needed information way to quickly!
I developed an eye turn (esotropia) as an adult 35. I've had mri and blood work all come back clear so the doctors can't find a reason for it. My best theory is that I was doing a lot of near work and got a horrible stiff neck for 3 days, some time after this is when i noticed something being off with my vision. I want to avoid the strabismus surgery and im going to see a vision therapist soon. Does my neck theory sound plausible? I get double vision only at distance i can get fusion but only if i focus hard and even then i can only hold it for a moment. Im afraid surgery is overkill for treating this.
I went to an Optometrist recommended by my neurologist months ago and had an exam. The optometrist said the mild saccades they saw weren’t enough to warrant visual therapy, but ever since I got a concussion over a year ago my iPhone screen just looks weird. It’s hazy. I try to focus on a letter and it feels like my eyes are shifting or blurring. Blue light filters help but not entirely. I’ve wondered if this visual issue is purely brain fog from inflammation (keto helps brain fog) or do I need to get a test from a neuroptometrist who who specializes in concussion?
I struggle navigating through rooms, i have feel like I'm drunk but without the good parts haha, Its almost feels like I'm in a trip. If Im stood up and standing still I'm slightly swaying left to right.
Same. How you doing now? I’ve been dealing with it for 3 months. Seeing a CCMI physio.
Oh interesting, I’ve had visual snow my whole life, I had no idea it could be brought on by concussion
So, I have basically all the symptoms you’ve been listing on the screen. I see a concussion therapist for over 3 months now and things improved, gladly. Went to see an optometrist and discovered that my prescription dropped significantly. Still I’m having a lot of brainfog, car sickness and a lot of other symptoms like difficulty with reading, scanning situations etc. Do you think this will become less with ‘just’ a new custom prescription for my glasses or is it still worth looking after my neck and do the whole eye-workout-routine?
Hi Jacky - it could be other issues entirely. Brain fog for example seems to be highly linked with neuro-inflammation which is tied to gut issues. Car sickness and visual motion issues could be neck, could be vision, could be combo. It's important to look at things from the 5 main drivers of Persistent Symptoms - check out our patient video series on this channel for more info on this!
What would the neck issue be and who is best to see for it? I have done pt, chiro, massage, xray, mri- only disc issues are low neck, my issues are upper cervical. Done VT, done some VRT.. people send me in circles..
These issues are usually not found on X-ray or MRI. It is usually muscles and joints. They tell your brain where you are in space and they communicate with your eyes and tell them how to move. If they are dysfunctional, your eye movement is altered and you feel off (visual motion sensitivity issues, skipping vision when tracking, etc.). These issues are also complex and require a clinician who understands the complexity of how the neck influences visual function. So just because you've done chiro, PT, etc. doesn't mean that those you saw were experienced in treating this condition. It could be that your neck is not the issue (could be vision, vestibular, etc.), or it could be that the practitioners you saw weren't right for the job.
I started having a some floaters. Any idea what this could be?
Are you depressed?
@@dkv674 I was. Not anymore.
What can you get to help your neck that’s is do damage the spasms are constant
Manual Therapy seems to be the key here.
I've had a cervical spine xray since my fall, does that rule out any neck issues I would have?
some, yes!
But not all. I have significant neck issues since the injury and unless head injury can cause neck issues also, then I would say an X-ray and even an mri does not detect all neck issues. Chiropractor 5 days a week for months, with massage, acupuncture and physio could not repair it. Physio even tripped off terrible headaches. MRI for me does not neck damage. I also have blood pressure headaches upon exertion since the head & neck injury. Diastolic often coasting along at 93. Sometimes I wonder if these make my neck worse. My vision is a mess. Even looking at trees or words makes me so dizzy. Either way, an X-ray may not be sufficient to rule out all neck issues.
What's the rehab program for neck problems?
Did u get a response?
@@ritacampbell1262 Ya if you search his channel he has covered the topic quite extensively. Basically what I understood is manual therapy, exercises for neck stabilizers. Some soft tissue work depending on your case. And some types of acupuncture are also useful. Regular stretching also ( and finding a suitable sleep pillow is what I wpuld recommend)
Dr Marshall, what is your exact title ? A better question what would someone that does what YOU do be called in the US?
A wizard! Lol just kidding - I'm a unique cat though. I'm a sports specialist chiropractor but I'm also a concussion researcher and specialize purely in concussion.
@@CompleteConcussions 😂 LOL! Right ?! Your very good at staying abreast on concussions. You need to come to Tx!
Stacked double vision still there after 10 years deterioration of sight and now cataracts along with most of your symptoms mentioned x Any advice please has ruined my life past 10 years
Find a neuro-optometrist!
I'm so sorry
Would smoking weed or nicotine affect your vision recovery ?
My neck problems are just not going away its been 4 months I see massage therapist and chiro
This usually means that there may be some underlying systemic issues that are not allowing your neck to recover after treatments - chronic inflammation, stress, etc. You may need to do some foundational work. Check out concussiondoc.io - Concussion Fix program walks you through how to build the right foundation.

Same situation. This might sounds strange just as I thought when I applied the first time but after a few applies I felt so relieved. Potato poultice in your neck. Pain hasn’t come back yet. If it does I know what to do. Let me know if you would like to try this to give your more details. Feel better! 🙏
I keep trying to watch your videos. I get that you may be sitting on a ball but OH MY GOODNESS! it makes it very difficult for those of us with PPCS to watch this without getting a bit dizzy. Stop the motion while doing your recordings!
Ehm.. balance, dizziness, car sickness.
Aren't those usually put into the vestibular category?
I know both systems are interconnected and the therapy could be similar but still..
They are often put into the vestibular category yes...doesn't mean that they are due to a vestibular problem. This is why concussion patients are spinning in circles with care providers
@@CompleteConcussions I'd say !! I have bounced around for all sorts of tests, but it always seems no doctors talk to each other. It's like they all have blinders on " this is my field...I don't think outside of that " . I wish there was a hub that took all the information from all the source, then advise you of routes to take, standard and holistic. It's been almost two years and I keep telling them , it's in my neck and maybe vision therapy.
I'm just wondering why some doctors say PCS should resolve within a couple of months, yet vision issues persist, along with other issues. This seems like an oxymoron.
