Greetings, I was a bike courier for 7.5 years in Calgary, born in Edmonton. Once part of the brotherhood/sisterhood, lifelong friendships form. I retired from biking Jan. 2005, got MS May 2012, in a wheelchair with memories now. Thank you for making this film, bike couriers of past and present in Calgary salute you. Some of the toughest S.O.B's around.
I was a bike courier in Vancouver for 8 years. From 18 to 26 years old. I am now 50 years old. People would tell me I needed to get a better job. I Knew it was true. For financial stability and to build a financially stable future. But maybe I did it because I just love to ride my bike. Of course that was the reason. But what I've built over the years far exceeds any amount of financial stability. I now realize at 50 that I am healthier than anyone I know. I still ride alot, and I believe that riding young and working hard prepared my body and mind for the aging process. You may not see it now as a young bike messenger, but stick with the riding even after you retire and you will reap the benefits of being healthy. Without realizing it I was building a foundation against disease and other health related issues that come with living a sedintary lifestyle. I take 0 meds and can out ride guys half my age. I'd rather have that than a fat bank account. These winters, and the job in general will make you a beast.
I am a 58 yrs old deaf man and I have been riding my mountain bike with the road tires for many years altogether as my main transportation before I bought myself a small cargo van few years ago . I plan on riding my mountain bike once again someday. I have the great respect for all cyclists and snow cyclists. 😎 Thanks for sharing that with us.
Respect! I dont mind riding in the rain or when conditions worsen. Storms can be fun/challenging. I’ve ridden thru hail, cold weather and also in winter. Mind you it’s usually in the spring thaw. There might still be snow on the ground but not near the conditions in this video. I’m on the west coast of Canada so the winters here are pretty mild compared to the rest of Canada. This is a true snow warrior. You have my respect ✊🏾.
Oh boy you get my utmost respect riding in the most awful weather, just earning a living👏👏👏You 20 guys are legends! And watching car drivers treat you like dirt, just like some comments on YT...There are both good and bad drivers and good and bad cyclists!!!
Amazing rabbithole the youtube algorithm can take you on. I started swimming this summer after a 10 year hiatus and this week I thought that maybe I could do a triathalon one day. Learned how to bike literally two days ago in my 20s and now I'm here. Love the video, as a New Yorker it took me back to a different time when the winters were new to me and the snow was deep. I must say, that I hate the colder months but I guess I'm starting to learn to appreciate the change in the seasons. I'd love for it to be summer all year but perhaps it wouldn't be summer without the winter. Big kudos to these folks, they look real cool not gonna lie, reminds me of that one video game The Division. I've been pondering if I should to pull the trigger on my first road bike... kinda scared of what might happen if I do. Unsure if I can ride in those cold temperatures as well, NYC streets and drivers are also not very friendly to cyclists.
You ride a fix in the snow... You realize you are a goddess? I did a stint for Mobil Messenger, NYC, 1978 and to this day it is the most exciting, rewarding gig ever, (and I've been paid to ski and light rock concerts too), traffic jamming was still the best. I hope you are still healthy and rockin' it!
Nice bike, I ride a Dolan (Terry Dolan). I started with Terry's first bike called the Cougar now I'm riding a Dolan Rebus road bike. Great bikes, Great bike builder, enuf said! I was never a bike courier but in T.O. I rode with my club members in minus 10, 12 Celsius. I'm older now and couldn't image doing that now, I stop riding at around minus 2 depending on the wind and precipitation. It was fun, people thought we were crazy, yeah I guess we were.
A roadie since the ‘70s and occasional bike mechanic, I would commute by bike as much as possible. Co-workers half my age could not understand such a thing as dressing for the weather. They were on sponsored teams but no riding in the rain or after dark. To me that below zero F ride was an honor. Three kinds or riders : professional racers - small percentage; recreational - many ; and utility riders whether courier, pedicabbie in Hanoi, or commuter - must be more and a responsible world around us. I despise those who drive blithely. Stay well.
This upcoming winter will be my 5th rodeo, it is dangerous and there's a lot of money to be made out there. Right now I am looking for a trackocross type fixed gear with some good o' knobby tires, 700c by 35 or up for the snow! My biggest fear is slipping, whether it is rain, snow, or even ice! I always take my time, because safety is more important than food or paper. It will get there when it get there.
Piece of Art this video, good takes and the feeling of intimacy is so present. Really love it congrats! And Respect for Bike couriers, the riders of the city
Love winter cycling, probably the activity I love the most. But doing this in Edmonton must be quite insane, not sure I'd do it. And not because of the weather, quite the opposite actually, but because of the fact Edmonton must be at least 20 years behind Montreal in terms of infrastructure and mentality. I've been biking yearlong for about 10 years in MTL and things are so much better now both in terms of the infrastructure and driver's mentality. We're not seen as weirdos and nuisance as much as before.
My best advice for anyone riding on the road in the snow and ice... Get yourself some studded tires. No, they are not illegal, at least where I live. In most jurisdictions, studded tire rules only apply to motor vehicles. Check your local legislation. Also, avoid locking up your wheels on dry asphalt, it can tear the studs out of the tire.
I've been watching a few messenger videos now. Some in beautifull cities with beautifull weather & quiet clean roads. Others in ugly cities with ugly conditions, and bitter drivers. Good luck from Ireland young lady - stay safe.
About the long hair, I can related, not about the hair but about the backpack, I’m a food delivery and when I ride without the delivery backpack almost all the drivers kind of respect me but when I’m working oh boy, they hate me like all the delivery people working in nyc. Peace
It's the worst. Skinny tires pierce through it... until they suddenly don't. Fat tires get clogged. Turning is impossible. Just gotta stay loose and push through
Bike courier here, just food apps not as rad as you bike messengers. It's true, people just hate us no matter where we are, bike lane, road, sidewalks. It doesn't matter if we follow traffic rules or not we are always second class citizens inndriver's eyes. I hate and love my job at the same time.
Do you not get a sweaty back riding in this weather with a backpack? It doesn't get this cold where I'm from but even at 10° my back gets uncomfortably cold with just a couple of layers because of the sweat, I would much rather put the cargo on my bike than on my body!
Mountain bikes with larger grippy tyres would be more suitable for this. Im a bike messenger based in Malaysia and I use a mountain bike because the roads are pretty much like the jungle
she said "when i put on baggy clothes and cut my hair i didnt get so much of a pu$%^ pass" thats right and no harm in saying it. people give women extra concessions becasue in turn women give society concessions
Hard core. the oatmeal is unforgiving, it eats your momentum and kills your straight tracking. Dunno if it's better with a skinny road tire, but I'm sure it still stinks.

Salute & well wishes to you Road Warrior! 🙏😎🚲

Hey, I hope you're feeling great and have a great new year. Greetings from Argentina 🥂

I admire this young lady, not only because of her job, but she has to put up with my son, she is one amazing daughter-in-law ❤

Thanks for sharing this wonderful tip. It's quite motivating. I'm a bike courier and sometimes it gets tough, as you know.
мне кажется наоборот, заработал кучу хронических заболеваний и много проблем с суставами благодаря такой работе
I’ve started my life down a car free path and the winters are rough but you motivate me. She’s tougher than 90% of dudes I know.
Great show, I just wish it was longer. Respect for bike couriers!
Big respect to you snow warrior.
I love cycling but what you do is extremely tough.
Love from Sumatra, Indonesia 🤘🤘
Respect from Brazil for bike couriers!!

Utterly interesting when the cameraman focuses on the machine parts.

Not only a fixie, but a fixie with _clipless_ pedals 🤯
@@dsp4392 clipless pedals rule in such situations
I love Mariah's chutzpah!! That looks insanely cold! Even in her time off, she's on the wind trainer riding to track cycling on tv. Legend!
I like winter riding, but its very dangerous. respect for your hard work.
greetings from hungary.
great little film, really shows her tenacity. Good luck to you Mariah.

Hello from Russia, you guys are great! Some of us ride bicycles to work. But almost no one works in winter on a bike.
Greetings from Croatia!

I'm riding my 2 SS bikes 365 days a year! Work, commuting, anything!
No car,just bikes!😊

What a wonderful film. This makes me a proud edmontonian! (except for those snobby drivers smh)
I'm from Edmonton I ride 365 too. Just as a commuter. Some days I ask why as well.

such a great short. it has intimate mood and nice atmosphere
Wow much respect to those people, I regret I didn't that job. Keep safe to all bike messengers

To have a really good cup of coffee, start with a long ride in snow. Part of a real life.
Any courier anywhere isn't one until they've done a few winters. But this seems extreme! Respect.
as another cycle courier I'm so in love with it as well!
I think it would be good to make a documentary with this person as the main character.

Thank you.

We had very snowy winter in Brooklyn this year and I remember following the ruts of the vehicles in front of me , gorgeous film. Kudos.
SNOW QUEEN
Must be tough riding bike on a road full of snow, greetings from cycle courier in Jakarta, Indonesia!
Awesome film!
Omg its gerry! ❤❤

I was so happy that she called out that evil “brown sugar” snow. Everyday riding in the Montana winters I would swear at it.
im not live in snowy country,
what's brown sugar? is that slippery?
@@MomoCampVibe it’s a mixture of snow and mud. It’s the most slippery thing out there
@@MomoCampVibe You can see it at 4:35, front tire wants to go everywhere, very unpredictable

Wow. Edmonton need to upgrade. Barmitts, goggles, studded tires and snowboard helmets. Hello from Montreal.
awesome viddy cheers mate!
Simply amazing!
Damn she's wearing cleats in the winter, that's impressive.
This was really good.
Amazing!!! 💯
Dang! Respect 👏👏👏
Жаль что такое короткое видео, очень интересно 👍🏼
Brakeless fixie in the snow 😳
Some wider, studded tires would surely help!
WOW!!!🤙🤟
hats off!

I thought Audis were AWD! 😆
Damn, she has no brakes on the cycle? That's pretty brave!
its fixed gear so your legs stop the back wheel. kind of a brake
What Brand is you backpack?. 😀
Excellent job saludos
Are those clip less boots???
yes!
What is Maria’s bike frame Model/type? I really like the proportions
Edmonton motorists hatred of anything not a car makes the summer near death, I cant imagine what you experience on a daily basis in the winter.
Wow. Me encantó!
Props to this female she riding fixed gear with clip less pedals and in the winter and in the snow I would said nope 😥. I like biking but I hate snow

I rode through some today on my fat bike. It's just as sketchy on 4" wide tires!
