I don't know a midfielder in the modern game who's as complete as Steven Gerrard. Great defensive qualities, great goals - with his feet and his head, and great work rate. The fact that he was an amazing captain is just icing on the cake. At times he played in the 6, at times he played almost like a second striker at Liverpool. Thankful to have seen him play.

Also FYI, one time a reporter asked Zidane what it was like to be the best player in the world, and he said “I don’t know, you’d have to ask Paul Scholes”. Gerrard’s passion is awesome but I think Zidane had more passion. All of these apply with Seedorf as well. He led by his work rate and play too, instead of depending purely upon any outward, off the park, personality. But being a good pro, with his work and attitude in training, the leadership was seamless then (through the week, between games) also. The add-in other aspects of his game, such as vision, made him in his prime the complete player.
For all the amazing long range goals he scored, his pace to score those excellent 1-on-1’s and his phenomenal ability in the air tend to get overlooked but brought him a lot of those goals.
If I were England manager I would have dropped Lampard for Gerrard, and had Carrick/Hargreaves alongside WHY?- Gerrard always did more of the sitting in a two with Lampard, when Gerrard was by far the better performer for England. Lampard always got preferential treatment for his Chelsea league titles.
