Something similar except the car towed belonged to the mother of the man's wife who called for the tow. New car which he didn't recognize. MIL was really pissed that she had to pay to get her car back.
Story 2 - I can't fathom a different country, but I've seen people do that after doing a bad tow to get liability coverage from the rental place. Around here people love to tow cars needing a flat bed (AWD/4WD) on a small trailer that assumes one set of wheels isn't connected to the transmission...which for almost any 4WD or AWD will absolutely destroy it.

I've seen the 1st story before. And that's what it is, a story, fiction etc. From the language I assume it's set in the UK but, private citizens cannot call for a tow truck to remove cars. It has to be done by the police or parking enforcement officers.
The lot guy should write a book. I have the title in mind; _Typical Wednesday_ as that's about how this poor dude's life rolls.
