I didn't expect LOTR to come in but I'm so happy it did. I mean, making Middle Earth in the actual MIDDLE OF THE EARTH is so sick! I need to see this movie.
+Zhadow900 I wish Hollywood would do something like this just have a marketable action/adventure movie then at the end of the out of nowhere its something the audience wouldn't expect and ties in with something that already exist..
What I love about Max is his personality and how enthusiastic he is about his projects You don't see other people in the industry show so much excitement for their projects like Max does.
I recall Tolkien once mentioning that if you were to count each Age as lasting 3000 years, we would now currently be living in the seventh age. In other words, close to 10,000 years after the events of LotR. So the math is right.
If they marketed it as a Lost City of Atlantis disaster movie with an all star cast, directed by Peter Jackson, people would get hype for it and then the press would tweet about the twist and more and more people would see it after the premier. That in itself is even greater marketing and people would be calling it the most daring and surprising thing to ever happen in cinema and people would go nuts over it for years.
+Lord Bidoof I think it could work as a fan made short film Directed by Joseph Kahn the guy who directed POWER/RANGERS UNAUTHORIZED.. The only thing that would suck would be not having Brian Cranston, Michael B Jordon and Chris Pratt.
I loved listening to him about it, but you can't really twist Tolkien's lore so much just for a holywood smash. He owns the story, we have to respect that.
Halfway through I thought 'Oh, it's just Sphere without the aliens'. Then the Ring shows up. Not sure if the follow up idea of 'modern day LOTR trilogy' would hold up, but this would be a fantastically absurd movie.
I gotta say, when I first bumped into Max here on youtube, I didn't really like him. Just the way he is, really flamboyant and out there and just really different. But then over time, after seeing him pop up on a few RUclips shows I like, I actually really started to like him and enjoy what he brought to the table.. He's kind of off the wall and crazy and he would probably be fun to hang out with. Greatly entertaining I'm sure, lol. The world needs more guys like this that think outside the box. Love him or hate him, he has a lot of passion and heart. You gotta respect that. And if is new to you as well and you don't really care for him all that much, give him a chance and watch some more of his stuff on his channel or wherever. Agree or disagree with him he does bring some very interesting perspectives to the table. I had to get past some stuff personally before I could open up to his ideas and way of thinking. But I do think he seems to be a good guy with a good heart and he is extremely passionate about writing, movies and all the other great stuff that we all enjoy. Rock on!!
Every time Max pitches a movie, every single time, you're sitting there going "okay, where's this going?" And then the 3rd act hits and you're like THIS IS THE BEST IDEA ANYONE'S EVER HAD
I love the handful of pitches Max has on RUclips that have a ridiculous twist near the end revealing that it was basically an adaption pitch all along, they always make me grin when the twist happens. Makes me want to write more than I already do, just to get better. I also need to learn to pitch things as enthusiastically as he does, I'm sure that helps a lot!
Max should have a RUclips channel entirely dedicated to movie pitches. Just slideshows of some actors with him going off on one for ten to twenty mins. No need for anything as elaborate as Death & Return or whatever, just stuff like this. I mean, this idea is absurd and I'd hate to see it executed in any medium, and the third-act cliffhanger seems like a mistake, but it's still fun as hell to listen to, mostly because Max really knows how to draw you in to a story with words and sell the idea. Same with the Man of Steel sequel (although that actually seems better than what we're getting). I could watch this stuff all day, and there's obviously a whole bunch of ideas Max has that are never going to reach us as movies or comics.
I was so uninterested until MY PRECIOUS. This could never be made but wow what a mindjob. A distant future sequel for LotR. The nerds might start an uprising if Tolkien's work was appended that much. Just look at the rage over the Hobbit movies. For better or worse, I love hearing Max pitch.
It would be bullshit though. The fires of Mount Doom destroyed the One Ring, and Sauron too, because Sauron put SO much power into the One Ring that it became a Load Bearing Artifact. Now... a new ring being formed in some ancient ruins by the fragments of Sauron's power? Maybe...
+Manfredo Morales Modern Hollywood, bro. "Sounds great, but where's the franchise in it?" "Uh? It's actually, ehm...LotR?" "Great, let's get started on it!"
+Thalaranias I think it's more that people know and care about these established franchises and to have a twist that big happen in a movie you never thought could be connected would stay with you for years. Can you imagine sitting in the Cinema watching a movie about Atlantis and that happens? It would blow you away.
“If it can be written or thought, it can be filmed.” - Stanley Kubrick. As for the marketing part, we can have one trailer max, 2-3 posters max, and tv spots with only one second of footage not seen in the trailers. None of them will reveal anything found underwater. We’re doing 10 Cloverfield Lane marketing (The Cloverfield Paradox for Netflix ONLY, and scrap everything I said before). For a higher chance to get audiences’ attention, we have a secret screening for the film about a month before the film’s release, and if the reviews are good enough, we will use that as a marketing strategy, otherwise embargo until a week before the film releases. I thought of this today (the day I saw this video)
This is a great video. Thanks for making it. I don't want you to make this film. What I would like however is about a million more of these. I could watch you spitballing ideas all day.
Dude, not even a LORD OF THE RINGS fan... but that was an exceptional sell! Wow, gotta give it up to the guy! I also LOOOVE the twisted ideas below of Cthulhulian goodness...
If I was a movie producer and had this guy pitching me movies like he does, I'd be either the richest producer in the business or broke in a matter of weeks, because I'd keep buying his fucking stories.
Is this being made now?! There's a movie on IMDB called "Deeper" that's being written by Max that's described as "A deep-sea dive turns into an unexpected psychological exploration for a former astronaut who signed up for the mission." AND it's being produced by MGM, the same people who produced The Hobbit trilogy! Please yes!
As soon as Michael B. Jordan stabbed Cranston I had my suspicion that it was the one ring, mount doom, etc. but the set-up of the whole premise and detail of the characters is what's so entertaining about this. Max Landis can pitch the fuck out of anything. Anything.
If you like the sound of this movie you should check out the movie ' Orc wars' , which is very similar minus the whole underwater thing. Basically Lord of the ring style orcs coming into our world
This is actually perfect if you think about it, because Tolkien presented Middle-earth as an ancient past of today's world. Such an awesome twist on that.
The only part of this idea that I don't agree with and don't understand is WHY we CAN'T make or market this movie. This sounds friggin' awesome and I am completely down for it.
I didn't expect LOTR to come in but I'm so happy it did. I mean, making Middle Earth in the actual MIDDLE OF THE EARTH is so sick! I need to see this movie.
I was like how can this not be made or marketed then came the ending and I was like 'Oh that's why lol'
Max has a knack for pitches that end with a brand.
(I.e. His Peter Pan idea and Winnie the Pooh ideas)
+Zhadow900 I wish Hollywood would do something like this just have a marketable action/adventure movie then at the end of the out of nowhere its something the audience wouldn't expect and ties in with something that already exist..
+Redfox Hilariously, it shows that the movie market needs a "brand" these days to stay afloat. :(
+Ryan Kirk That is exactly what needs to happen with The Matrix. They already kind of took that approach with the ani-matrix.
Thin Soldier I was thinking that it could be possible if it were a short like the gritty Mighty Morphan Power Rangers reboot short..
M. Night. Shyamalan would be proud of that twist
Ironic, considering how M. Night Shyamalan just did plot twist like that with his new movie.
@@javier.alvarez764 What movie?
What I love about Max is his personality and how enthusiastic he is about his projects
You don't see other people in the industry show so much excitement for their projects like Max does.
+PesciGotPepsi Agreed, a lot of people think it's him being pretentious. When in reality he just loves what he does. Got to have respect for that
Shame he is a feminist tho.
+PesciGotPepsi To be fair, he hasn't done much in the industry.
+TheOjkk whats wrong with being a feminist?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAAAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH
I recall Tolkien once mentioning that if you were to count each Age as lasting 3000 years, we would now currently be living in the seventh age. In other words, close to 10,000 years after the events of LotR. So the math is right.
You're right, that's not a movie; but it'd make a kickass graphic novel
"Middle of History." I'm so mad I didn't get that the first time I saw this.
If the ending changed a little bit, it could be a Cthulhu movie
Yes please.
That's what I was thinking at first
Why not both?
Underwater (2020)
Weird how prescient this turned out to be lol
If they marketed it as a Lost City of Atlantis disaster movie with an all star cast, directed by Peter Jackson, people would get hype for it and then the press would tweet about the twist and more and more people would see it after the premier. +Lord Bidoof haha no....
+Lord Bidoof I think it could work as a fan made short film Directed by Joseph Kahn the guy who directed POWER/RANGERS UNAUTHORIZED.. The only thing that would suck would be not having Brian Cranston, Michael B Jordon and Chris Pratt.
+Lord Bidoof If it worked for Force Awakens it could work for this.
I loved listening to him about it, but you can't really twist Tolkien's lore so much just for a holywood smash. He owns the story, we have to respect that.
Ben Memelord its a shame they will never :(
I'm willing to contribute to a kickstarter to get this movie going.
+Jason Boyd what, like $5? put up 50 million if you wanna talk.
enjoy5566 Ha, I said contribute, not produce the damn thing. I put up $50M, I'm going to want to add some creative input of my own.
Yeah because getting 100 million through kickstarter would be so easy
Halfway through I thought 'Oh, it's just Sphere without the aliens'.
Then the Ring shows up.
Not sure if the follow up idea of 'modern day LOTR trilogy' would hold up, but this would be a fantastically absurd movie.
+Mushroomer2006 You can't do modern day LotR. Not enough walking.
Lord of the Rings is Atlantis modern day trilogy, this is madness. I love it. Too bad he's right about there being no way to make or market it.
+Ethan In our hearts.
It's actually lemuria, but ok.
That was hilarious. I would fucking love to watch that movie.
I gotta say, when I first bumped into Max here on youtube, I didn't really like him. Just the way he is, really flamboyant and out there and just really different. You should do more interviews like this. I love them!
Every time Max pitches a movie, every single time, you're sitting there going "okay, where's this going?" And then the 3rd act hits and you're like THIS IS THE BEST IDEA ANYONE'S EVER HAD
That 8 minute pitch was better than anything in the Hobbit movies tbh
I didn't expect The Lord Of The Rings twist. It does sound really cool.
I was so hooked up until the LOTR boot. lol
Genius. Absolutely brilliant.
You mad fucking genius!!!! I would watch that movie till my eyes gave out! HOLY SHIT!
Dude I'd rather listen to you tell stories rather than watch a movie. So intense haha love it
That's one hell of a twist ending...
Should call the film '10 Hobbit Lane'
More like "Deepwater Hobbitizon"
Zack Fry It hobbits
Zack Fry Journey to the centre of the Shire
The Mordor Paradox
It really seems like Max Landis and Spoony (Noah Antwiler) would get along really well.
Max should have a RUclips channel entirely dedicated to movie pitches. Just slideshows of some actors with him going off on one for ten to twenty mins. No need for anything as elaborate as Death & Return or whatever, just stuff like this. I could watch this stuff all day, and there's obviously a whole bunch of ideas Max has that are never going to reach us as movies or comics.
Ideas are cheap and plentiful.
Getting them well realized is the challenge.
That's better than your average M. Night Shyamalan ending...easily.
Josh Friedlander the Irony of this fucking comment after Split hahaha
Max is such a good story teller. I could just watch videos of him pitching.
'Let's do that Dylan O Brian Kid from the Maze Runner'
'No'
... To be fair... I'd watch it.
+Sora Hjort That is pretty cool. New LOTR trilogy. Great stuff. Rings forever.

Now... a new ring being formed in some ancient ruins by the fragments of Sauron's power? Maybe...
Man, I was excited about this until the Lord of the Rings twist.
If you change the ending so it's not copyright infringing, this'd make a great film ... or even episode of Doctor Who.
Ian Hollis a Doctor vs Sauron episode? I'd say, yes sir!
Best movie I never watched. The anime industry needs you.
that fucking twist, GODDAMN max, you're A GENIUS!
That was such a wild ride
I thought for sure this was a take on Aquaman or Submariner, haha. Loved that twist at the end!
This absolutely works. The only problem is it being a pre existing IP
Max Landis Pitch = Words that instantly mean happiness
Why do all your movie pitches end with the twist being that it actually takes place in a preexisting franchise
+Manfredo Morales Modern Hollywood, bro. "Sounds great, but where's the franchise in it?" "Uh? It's actually, ehm...LotR?" "Great, let's get started on it!"
Thalaranias Damn, true that
+Thalaranias I think it's more that people know and care about these established franchises and to have a twist that big happen in a movie you never thought could be connected would stay with you for years. Can you imagine sitting in the Cinema watching a movie about Atlantis and that happens? It would blow you away.
+Manfredo Morales desperate to get hired to wirte another POS movie like Victor F or A. Ultra
+Manfredo Morales Because he's a terrible hack.
I'm being totally honest here, this kind of shit is way better than rebooting old movies.
damn man! that ending hit me like a truck 😂
i like how everyone just loses their shit over the name drop of a hypothetical actor.
I said Michael B Jordan to myself, just before Max said it...
+Mitch Gosser (PolterZeitgeist) It feels good knowing he's becoming the first thought of anyone's choice.
+Mitch Gosser (PolterZeitgeist) I was gonna say Donald Glover (Aka Childish Gambino). Close enough though, they're both black.lol
+Malik Tarrant He's becoming the first thought of who? and for what?
...oh. ...OH. Because it's *Middle* Earth. Goddammit, Max Landis, you beautiful bastard.
Whenever he makes a pitch, i find myself all in. lmao.
Damn that sounds incredible. That Lord Of The Rings tie-in makes me beg for it to happen now
“If it can be written or thought, it can be filmed.” - Stanley Kubrick.

I thought of this today (the day I saw this video)
I thought this idea was going nowhere until B Jordan popped that ring on. Then my head exploded. Lol!
Okay, I want to see this. make it happen. lol
damn you and your twists max they get me everytime
This is a great video. Thanks for making it. I don't want you to make this film. What I would like however is about a million more of these. I could watch you spitballing ideas all day.
This movie sounded amazing and could be like one of the best ever, and then it ended and I was like I get why now
I love how he said young guy and chose someone older than him.
Idris Elba will be acting as a deep sea diver dealing with some supernatural stuff in a movie Max is making.....So I guess the movie is getting made?
This dude is a lot of fun. Very entertaining!
Really neat. I could see it being a fan film of some sort.
+Uptomyknees could that rusted metal at the beginning be Sting?
+BrownCoat48 It could if elvish steel rusted.
this is the perfect example of Max being such a good storyteller that even a terrible idea can sound pretty good
You could make this, and it would be fantastic and crazy, and now I need this to happen!
Dude, not even a LORD OF THE RINGS fan... but that was an exceptional sell! Wow, gotta give it up to the guy! I also LOOOVE the twisted ideas below of Cthulhulian goodness...
I just want a good Dune movie or series.
+Kenshar1984 Damn right.
+Kenshar1984 haha I'd love to hear him do a pitch like this for a modern-day Dune prequel.
z beeblebrox wm
+Kenshar1984 Actually the Scifi channel made one a few years back.
Those were two mini-series... They were good.. But didn't have a full movie budget to make them the best they could have been.
I fucking love you hahaha you're tv show with the kids sounds fucking amazing
You had me until Micheal B. Jordon became Golum lol. Great at pitch though!
There's a TV show being made of this franchise, I'd love ot see this concept done.
I'd watch that shit
Holy shit. That twist.
Oh my God
'shoved down and under'
Max you clever man
I just got that
THIS is why I love you, Max. Pitchmaster 9000! Sorry, made it sound like some sort of ... you know.
I totally thought the ending was going to be Chuthulhu/other Lovecraftian stuff.
If I was a movie producer and had this guy pitching me movies like he does, I'd be either the richest producer in the business or broke in a matter of weeks, because I'd keep buying his fucking stories.
hahahahaha that plot twist got me, jesus max is tooooo quick at thinking up plots
I was hoping a Spongebob twist but this was fucking awesome!
Press "7" repeatedly. The sound he makes is awesome.
That was entertaining as all hell.
I'd pay to see it.
that is actually brilliant!
If this can't make it as an official movie for obvious reasons, it needs to be a fan made.
Please yes!

wow that would be freaking dope!
Oh my goodness this is so good.
You're wrong Landis, this movie would be badass!
If you like the sound of this movie you should check out the movie ' Orc wars' , which is very similar minus the whole underwater thing. Basically Lord of the ring style orcs coming into our world
Shyamalan pulled off this twist pretty much the same year this video dropped with Split!!!
At first I thought this was gonna be an Aqua Man movie with Michael B. Jordan as Black Manta.
As Max was describing the movie, I was thinking this underwater civilization was R'Lyeh. And though it wasn't the case, I wasn't disappointed. .3.
This is actually perfect if you think about it, because Tolkien presented Middle-earth as an ancient past of today's world. Such an awesome twist on that.
This reminds me of Split.
You should write the screenplay of "At The Mountains of Madness"
I really thought this type of thing couldn't be marketed or made, then Split happened and I was like WHOA SHYAMALAN PULLED A MAX LANDIS SCHMOES LOTR
That was amazing.
I was waiting for "that's when they see a sign that says "Welcome to Bedrock" New Flintstones film
3:25 "MIDDLE of history" LooL
at first I was like "Is this a modern update to H.P. lovecraft's the temple or Dagon?"
The only part of this idea that I don't agree with and don't understand is WHY we CAN'T make or market this movie. This sounds friggin' awesome and I am completely down for it.
hahahaha, dude f**k yes! im watching that trilogy!
That sounds like the best movie ever!
I thought he was going to call it Down Under for a moment.
You forgot to throw a giant Budgerigar into your pitch :-)
Id buy popcorn for that.
