Snails aren’t like your average garden pest; these creatures aren’t insects or bugs, but they’re actually mollusks, and more related to clams and squid. Garden variety snails are most known for their spiral shells attached on their backs. These shells are typically variations of brown in color, and most garden snails grow no larger than 1 ½ inches in height. They have one foot with which they use to crawl across surfaces, and they also have tentacles, or eye stalks, with their actual eyes located on the ends.
First, inspect your lawn and garden for snail activity. Snails target the leaves of garden plants and ornamentals and are capable of eating several times their own body weight over a single night. You’ll notice visible holes in the leaves of any plants they’ve eaten. They’ll also eat newly sprouting grass seeds, so they’re a threat to anyone who may have just laid turf seed as well. To tell snails from other pests, snails will leave visible mucus trails wherever they go, and these will remain for several days.
After identifying your pest and inspecting for activity on your property, it’s time to start treatment.
Before starting any treatment, be sure to wear your personal protective equipment, or PPE.
To get rid of snails on your property, you’ll need to use a bait granule like Ficam.
Ficam is an easy and ready to use bait that is labeled to treat and control snails in lawns and garden beds, but unlike common molluscicides, it can also be used to treat other common insect pests, including roaches, ants, and silverfish. Ficam contains the active ingredient Orthoboric Acid, a naturally occurring compound, and it’s safe to use around children and pets when used according to label directions. To use Ficam, you’ll spread it at a different rate depending on where you’re applying it.
Prevention is essential to keeping pests in check. Even after you’ve applied pesticides, the best way to stop snail activity is to make sure it can’t happen. Start by picking up lawn debris like tree bark, branches, loose stones, or other unwanted materials to eliminate snail hideouts. Next, work on reducing the moisture content of your lawn. Snails need wet, damp environments to prevent their bodies from drying out, so it’s a good idea to regulate the water your lawn receives to maintain its health but still discourage large amounts of snail activity. Another way to prevent snails from infesting is to eliminate their eggs. A single snail is capable of self-fertilizing and can produce up to 430 eggs in a single year. By busting one part of the life cycle, you won’t have to worry about many snails in the future.

Can this be used for vegetables garden or it is toxic ?
Ficam Insect Bait is not labeled for use within vegetable garden beds or other beds with plants grown for consumption. To protect those areas, we recommend you apply the product as a perimeter application around the bed. Apply low to the ground to prevent any granules from drifting.
